for Distinguished Lecturers in History series

Michael Sherry, professor of history at Northwestern University, will speak on campus Wednesday, Feb. 25, for the Distinguished Lecturers in History series. His lecture, "In the Shadow of World War II," will begin at 8 p.m. in the Mills Godwin Jr. Building Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.

The author of "Preparing for the Next War: American Plans for the Postwar Defense, l941-45" and "The Rise of American Air Power: The Creation of Armageddon," Sherry is an expert on the relationship between military force and American foreign policy. Sherry's most recent book, "In the Shadow of War: The United States since the 1930s" (1995), has emerged as a major work of synthesis about recent American history.

Sherry also employs his scholarship in public education and activism. He is sought after as a commentator by the print and electronic media and as an expert for federal court cases emerging out of the l993 gays-in-the-military controversy. He is also a prolific contributor to The New York Times Book Review.

Sherry is the second and final speaker for the first year of the annual series, which opened Nov. 5 with an appearance by military historian John Keegan.
