Women's Caucus presents annual award to Lady Monarch
head coach Wendy Larry

The university Women's Caucus presented its annual award Jan. 28 to Wendy Larry, coach of the women's basketball team.

Larry has been a part of the Lady Monarch program for nearly 20 years, first as a player and later as an assistant coach. She is currently in her 11th season as head coach, and has recorded 240 career wins against 89 losses. She has led the team to seven conference titles and nine NCAA appearances in 10 years, including the last six consecutive NCAA tournaments. Last year, her team advanced to the NCAA championship game, and this year's squad is ranked third in the nation.

Larry's many awards include RCA Coach of the Year, Sporting News Coach of the Year and U.S. Women's Basketball Writers Association Coach of the Year.

Women's Caucus board member Judy Bowman, who pointed out Larry's accomplishments at the award ceremony last month, hastened to add, however, that Larry was also being honored for other reasons.

"It's not for these accomplishments along that we are presenting this year's award to Wendy Larry. This award is in recognition of the program she has built, the assistant coaches she has brought in and the young women she has recruited for the team. These young women truly epitomize what student-athletes should be, often compiling nearly a 3.0 GPA as a team with several members on the Dean's List," Bowman said.

She also pointed out that the Lady Monarchs make numerous appearances in the community, volunteer to work with the Special Olympics and serve as role models for area girls and boys.

"Wendy might say whats been accomplished has been because of many people, especially her assistants and team members," Bowman said. "However, the tone is set by the person at the top, and we want to recognize the leadership and example Wendy has brought to our program. We're proud she's a member of the Old Dominion University community."

Larry, who earned her bachelor's degree at Old Dominion in 1977 and her M.S.Ed. degree in 1982, was presented a plaque by the Women's Caucus.
