Created through an endowment from Landmark Communications Inc., the prize is named in honor of the late Charles L. Kaufman, who was a prominent Norfolk attorney and civic leader in Hampton Roads.

The prize is awarded annually to a student who has "exerted an exceptional and constructive influence on the university, its students or the community by demonstrating the highest qualities of leadership and service."

Graduating seniors from August 1997, December 1997 and May 1998 are eligible for consideration. Nominees must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and an exceptional record of service to the university or the greater Hampton Roads community. In addition to the winning student, up to nine other nominees will be accorded Kaufman Honors, nonmonetary recognition of their achievements. The honored students will be announced at the university Honors and Awards Banquet on May 6.

Nominations may be made by a faculty or staff member and should be sent to Maggi Curry-Williams, associate dean of students, in room 2008 of Webb Center.

Nominations of students who meet the basic eligibility requirements and submit the required supporting materials will be reviewed by a screening committee composed of representatives from the academic colleges and the campus community. The committee will then conduct personal interviews and forward recommendations to the president for his review and final selection.
