What is Undergraduate Research?
Undergraduate research affords students and faculty the wonderful opportunity to work together to investigate topics that may or may not be thoroughly presented in the classroom. Undergraduate researchers have the opportunity to work in faculty-run laboratories, archives, and research centers assisting with data collection and analysis. Undergraduate researchers also have the opportunity to complete self-directed research under the mentorship of faculty members.

Why should I get involved in undergraduate research?
There are many benefits to taking part in undergraduate research:
� Give yourself a competitive edge for research-related careers and admission to graduate school
� Increase your knowledge through hands-on and inquiry-based learning experiences
� Develop exciting academic and career paths
� Publish the results of your research
� Hone your critical thinking, communication, and quantitative skills and abilities

Who can participate?
Any interested undergraduate student at Old Dominion University may take advantage of the Undergraduate Research Program. The abstracts for last year's Undergraduate Research Symposium will give you a good idea of the extensive research opportunities available at Old Dominion. Our list of undergraduate research grant recipients will also give you an idea of your fellow student's work in the area of research.

What can I do with my research?
By taking part in undergraduate research, students are trained and prepared for the completion of research proposals and theses that have the potential of becoming publications. In addition, students taking part in undergraduate research have the opportunity to attend and present their research at conferences-including Old Dominion's Undergraduate Research Symposium. Overall, experience with undergraduate research greatly prepares students for internships, future careers and graduate school.

Who is eligible to apply for an Undergraduate Research Grant?
All ODU Juniors and Seniors with at least a 3.25 cumulative gpa at ODU can apply for an undergraduate research grant.

Who is eligible to apply for the Honors College's Essential Supplies/Equipment Grants and Travel Grants?
ESE and Travel Grants are restricted to Honors College students. If you're not an Honors College student, you should consider applying for our new research-intensive curricular option .(refer to option 2)

Are there any grants available to undergraduates who are not in the Honors College?
The University Undergraduate Research Grant Program is for all ODU juniors and seniors. Some colleges and departments have developed funding programs to promote undergraduate research opportunities. Your faculty research mentor can provide you with information regarding these opportunities.
The Batten College of Engineering and Technology sponsors a College-wide Research Experience for Undergradautes Program.
