Kenneth A. Gideon '93, '01

Kenneth A. Gideon

Kenneth A. Gideon, assistant director of licensing and special events coordinator in the Office of University Events, has been associated with the University for 16 years. Over the past year, Gideon has been involved in three community service projects. He assisted Jason Redman with the logistics of the "Run For Freedom." He is also a participant in this year's Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's Race for the Cure. Gideon, along with Cecelia T. Tucker, director of community relations, has spearheaded the second Annual Community Care Day, taking place on Saturday, October 16.

Gideon, Tucker, and Karen Travis, assistant vice president for institutional advancement and director of university events and licensing, worked closely together to develop a program for Community Care Day which would truly incorporate a major community service project, while offering a number of free services on campus to the surrounding communities. More than 370 volunteers will assist in picking up trash and participate in beautification projects in three surrounding neighborhoods. Also, nearly 30 services will be offered in Webb University Center and across campus. These services will provide unique opportunities for community residents to obtain advice on environmentally friendly lawn care practices, receive tips for air conditioning and plumbing maintenance, donate blood to the American Red Cross, have their blood pressure checked, and obtain a free flu shot.

Gideon entered Old Dominion in 1988 as undergraduate and helped found two student organizations on campus, the Commuter Student Union and the Old Dominion University Chapter of the Delta Chi Fraternity. He received his bachelor's degree in 1993 and began his career here as an admissions counselor. In 2000, he became a special events coordinator and in 2001, he received his master's degree in higher education administration.

Gideon currently lives in Virginia Beach, but in December will relocate to Ipswich, Australia, where he will live with his partner of seven years, Simon Mafi.
