Purpose
Old Dominion University requires sound operational and management practices be maintained in the workplace to ensure that information technology resources are properly protected.
The purpose of this policy is to establish operational and management principles.

Workplace
Old Dominion University believes that effective security of information technology resources in the workplace is a responsibility held jointly by both management and employees.
It is the responsibility of each department to protect technology resources from unauthorized access in terms of both physical security of hardware and information and data security perspectives.
Centralized Resources
The Office of Computing and Communications Services is responsible for the effective security of centralized assets and is responsible for protecting technology resources from unauthorized access in terms of both physical security of computing equipment and information and data security.
Definitions
Data Security is defined as the means of protecting data from unauthorized access and corruption.
Physical Security is defined as all physical measures necessary to safeguard classified equipment, material, and documents from access or observation by unauthorized persons.
Information Security is defined as the concepts, techniques, technical measures, and administrative measures used to protect information assets from deliberate or inadvertent unauthorized acquisition, damage, disclosure, manipulation, modification, loss, or use.
Information Technology Resources are defined as computers, telecommunication equipment, networks, automated data processing, databases, the Internet, printing, management information systems, and related information, equipment, goods, and services. It is in the interest of the Commonwealth and Old Dominion University that Virginia is in the forefront of developments in technology. For that reason, this standard shall not be construed to hamper the pursuit of the mission of the institution in instruction and research.
