Policy on the Use of Computing Resources

Purpose
Old Dominion University has a significant investment in information technology resources. As owner of these resources, Old Dominion has a responsibility to:
ensure the appropriate and lawful use of these resources,
safeguard the integrity of computers, networks, and data,
ensure that use of electronic communications complies with university policies;
protect the university against damaging legal consequences.
Use of Computing Resources
Old Dominion University students, faculty, and staff are afforded the privilege of using information technology resources, telecommunications equipment, computers, and telecommunications and computing networks. Privileges are granted for the expressed purpose of supporting the university's mission of instruction, research, and service, and the business and administrative functions of the university. It is the responsibility of each individual to use information technology resources in an appropriate manner and to comply with any Federal, State, or local statutes as might apply to these resources.
Old Dominion University reserves the right to revise or amend those policies as necessary at any time to further define the use of information technology resources and services.
Definitions
Information Technology Resources are defined as computers, telecommunication equipment, networks, automated data processing, databases, the Internet, printing, management information systems, and related information, equipment, goods, and services. It is in the interest of the Commonwealth and Old Dominion University that Virginia is in the forefront of developments in technology. For that reason, this standard shall not be construed to hamper the pursuit of the mission of the institution in instruction and research.
