Assessment Methods

Portfolio Development»Guidelines by Curriculum 

In order to seek portfolio approval, you must have at least 5 years of counseling or related experience with qualified supervision.

The following courses can be considered for portfolio development since they emphasize application of theory-to-practice:

HMSV 339: Interpersonal Relations
HMSV 344: Career Development & Appraisal*
HMSV 346: Diversity Issues in Human Services Counseling*
HMSV 440W: Program Development, Implementation and Funding
HMSV 444: Psychoeducational Groups*
HMSV 468: Internship in Human Services Counseling

You must be able to demonstrate all of the following, based on prior experience:

Practice:

  1. Practice description (at least 5 years in the field)
  2. Practice documentation

Supervision:

  1. Supervision description (licensed/professional supervision)
  2. Supervision documentation

Knowledge-base and Reflection:

  1. Reflections on self as developing practitioner
  2. Reflections on applying theory-to-practice

*In addition to the application of theory-to-practice, these courses also emphasize:
a) theory/concepts, and b) depth and breadth of material.

Once you receive faculty approval to do a portfolio, follow these guidelines to develop the contents:

Required for every Portfolio:

  • Cover letter listing courses applied for
  • Table of Contents
  • Resume or Vita

For each course applied for:

Practice

  • Practice Description/Narrative
  • Practice Demonstration

Supervision

  • Supervision Description/Narrative
  • Supervision Documentation/Letters of Verification

Knowledge-base and Reflection

  • Reflections of self as developing practitioner
  • Reflections on application of theory-to-practice

Keep in mind that you will be assigned a faculty assessor who may give you specific requirements or sections to include in your portfolio. You should make contact with your assessor, who can give you additional guidance and clarification.
