Need assistance in developing a new program?
Internships and cooperative education are both semester-long work experiential education experiences related to a student's major. Opportunities can be either full or part-time and are normally available to undergraduate students in their junior and senior years and to graduate students.
Interns can be paid or unpaid and work for a single semester. Cooperative education students complete two or more paid work semesters with the same employer, usually with an increased level of responsibility and compensation each semester.
Old Dominion offers both alternating co-op, in which students alternate full-time work and study semesters, and parallel co-op, in which students work part-time and study part-time for two or more consecutive semesters.
Employer responsibilities:
- Offer an opportunity related to one or more aspects of a student's academic program.
- Provide adequate supervision, guidance, and resources for students to carry out their assignments.
- Complete an evaluation, provided by the CMC, at the end of each work semester.

The Career Management Center can help you locate qualified students to fill part-time jobs in your company. You may post a job in our eRecruiting system and receive resumes directly from students at no cost to you.
We also hold a Summer Jobs Fest each spring to help connect ODU students with seasonal part-time and full-time employment. Please contact Andrea Harrell, Assistant Director for Student Employment, if you would like more information.

Student Club and Organization Presentations
Students are anxious to gain information from the world of work. Employers are invited to meet with student clubs and organizations to present information sessions related to employer information and career issues. Career Management Center College Liaisons work with student clubs and organizations to provide opportunities for employer visits. Please contact the Career Management Center to schedule presentations.
Professional Etiquette Dinner
This event brings together students and employers in a dinner setting, allowing you to meet prospective candidates in an informal environment. The program covers business behavior including greetings, handshaking, dining etiquette, appropriate dinner conversation, ordering dinner in a restaurant, etc. Each dinner also includes a special presentation, in the past these have included business fashion and Chinese Business Etiquette.
Employers can sponsor a table for $300, which includes dinner for one company representative. Students are informed of the type of student being sought by the employers so they can choose appropriate tables. There is time before and after the dinner to meet students not seated at your table. Career Advice and a Slice
Career Advice and a Slice is an excellent opportunity to promote your organization while educating students about the realities of the world of work.
This employer-sponsored seminar series allows you to experience Old Dominion University students in an informal setting, you to provide "Advice" on a career related topic and accompanying pizza by the "Slice".
Students are eager to interact and hear first hand information about what employers want, need, and expect while you increase your potential to attract high quality interns and graduates.
What kind of presentations? Presentations are on a career related topic of your choice and the format is flexible. We have had everything from discussions to more interactive presentations involving small groups role-playing specific scenarios related to interviewing.
When are the seminars? Generally, the sessions are held during activity hour 12:30 - 1:30pm on Tuesdays or Thursdays, however there are also several sessions scheduled at other days and times in order to address the needs of evening and graduate students.
