A special meeting of the Executive Committee of the Board of Visitors was held on Thursday, July 11, 1991, at 1:00 PM, in the Board Room of the New Administration Building. The following members of the Committee were in attendance:

The Rector called the meeting to order and explained that a special meeting of the Executive Committee was called to consider a faculty tenure appeal. Ordinarily tenure appeals are heard for the Board by the Academic Affairs Committee, but it was not possible to summon a quorum of that committee prior to the July 15th deadline required in the Tenure Policy. Therefore, the Executive Committee, which was able to summon a quorum, will consider the appeal.
Dr. Carter indicated that the appeal was filed only days before the board meeting held on June 20, and the Academic Affairs Committee did not have all the documentation pertinent to the case at that time in order to consider the appeal during that meeting.
Provost Henry briefly explained the tenure process, both in general terms and in terms of the faculty member in question. Dr. Carter reiterated that the role of the Board is not to judge the faculty member's work, but to determine whether the faculty member recevied a tenure review in the manner specified in the policy, and whether the faculty member's rights had been violated in the process of evaluation.
After considerable discussion, the Committee concurred that the faculty member in question received all of the process due in the tenure process and, upon a motion duly made and seconded, unanimously affirmed the President's decision denying the appeal.
With no further business to be discussed, the meeting was adjourned.
