The following events took place from December to February:

60 years ago-The Students Absence Committee issues a dire warning to students who failed to appear to explain excessive absences from class. · Enrollment at the Norfolk Division continues to grow, with 522 students and 24 faculty members in 1939-40.

50 years ago- The school applies for accreditation at the two-year level. · The college chorus performs Handel's "Messiah" at Colonial Avenue Methodist Church. · Football coach Scrap Chandler fields an all-star aggregation led by John Curfman, Bill Suter, Lester Brock and Kick Parker. The team compiles a 6-1 record.

40 years ago-A. D. Chandler, president of the William and Mary system, announces he will soon recommend to the Board of Visitors that a full four-year accreditation be sought for the Norfolk Division. · The library receives a microfilm containing the Norfolk census results of 1860.

30 years ago-After it is learned that Gov. Godwin's budget proposal for Old Dominion would ensure the university had one of the state's lowest per-student appropriations, the Faculty Senate launches the "Save ODU" campaign to persuade the governor and legislators to grant the school a sufficient budget increase for the 1970-72 biennium. · James L. Bugg completes his first semester as Old Dominion's second president.

20 years ago-The university kicks off its 50th anniversary celebration with a founding ceremony Jan. 4. The Virginian-Pilot and Ledger-Star publish a commemorative supplement in their Sunday, Feb. 10, edition, featuring photos and stories from Old Dominion's first 50 years. · Pete Goldsmith succeeds William Larkin as associate dean of students. · Stokley Carmichael speaks on campus, sponsored by a local chapter of the All-African People's Revolutionary Party. · The Russian National team defeats the Lady Monarchs, 76-66, in front of the largest single-game crowd for a women's collegiate basketball game (10,237) at Norfolk Scope.

10 years ago-D. Bruce Hanna '70 (M.S.Ed. '73), director of Old Dominion's Pretlow Planetarium, is named Staff Member of the Year by the Hourly And Classified Employees Association. · The university sends letters to 41,000 students and alumni who had contributed to the Old Dominion football fund, offering refunds. Students were assessed fees between 1986-89 to support a football program, which was subsequently scrapped. · Financial expert Louis Rukeyser addresses Old Dominion's 10th annual Economic Forecast Luncheon.

5 years ago-The Center for Advanced Ship Repair and Maintenance opens, a joint venture of Old Dominion, the Center for Innovative Technology, the South Tidewater Association of Ship Repairers and the city of Norfolk. · Ground is broken Jan. 24 for the University Wall. · The Board of Visitors names Provost Jo Ann Gora to serve as acting president next fall while President James V. Koch is on leave. · Former Lady Monarch Anne Donovan '83 is selected for induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame in May.
