Gray Simons, Mikki Baile Retire
Wrestling coach Gray Simons and athletic administrator Mikki Baile have retired after long and distinguished careers at Old Dominion.
Simons, a two-time Olympian and member of seven halls of fame, coached Monarch wrestling teams for 17 seasons, compiling a 131-106-2 record. During his tenure at ODU, he coached 27 wrestlers who qualified for nationals and five All-Americans. In 1994, the Monarchs captured the conference championship and Simons was named CAA Coach of the Year.
As a wrestler himself, Simons won four NAIA national championships and three straight NCAA national titles. He was a member of the 1960 and 1964 U.S. Olympic teams. Simons was named the 33rd most important athlete of the century from Virginia by Sports Illustrated in 1999.
Baile, senior associate athletic director, came to Old Dominion in 1975 as head coach of field hockey and lacrosse, positions she held for four years. She became the assistant athletic director in 1979, and remained in administration the remainder of her career.
Baile was heavily involved in womens athletics and served on the NCAA Council from 1983-87. She was tournament director for the 1983 Final Four womens basketball tournament, as well as director for two Final Four field hockey tournaments. Baile is a member of five halls of fame.
