Work On Maglev Is Back On Track

Work on the stalled magnetic levitation transportation system on campus, known as Maglev, resumed this spring following a settlement reached by American Maglev Technology and three of its subcontractors.

The agreement paved the way for the release of $2 million from the Federal Railway Administration, which had placed a stop-work order on the project in November.

AMT, in conjunction with Lockheed Martin, other firms and ODU engineering faculty, have begun work to improve and refine Maglev’s control system. If the vehicle and system prove successful during its tests, the results of which could be known as early as this fall, additional funding would then be needed to complete work on the tracks and the system’s three stations.
