| Hall Of Fame Inducts Five
ODU’s first Rhodes Scholar, a wrestling All-American, a baseball All-American and two basketball standouts were inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame on April 27. This year’s class includes Matt Quatraro ’96 (baseball), Roger Randall ’81 (wrestling), Samantha Salvia ’96 (field hockey), Petey Sessoms ’95 (basketball) and the late Charlie Smith ’85 (basketball).
Quatraro, an all-purpose performer, played the outfield, first base, third base and caught. He is one of only two Monarchs to hit .400 for his entire career. He helped lead ODU to three CAA titles.
He was named a second-team All-American in 1996 and selected for the CoSIDA Academic All-America squad that year. Graduating with a degree in history, Quatraro was drafted in the eighth round by Tampa Bay. He currently works with Tampa Bay as the training catching coach.
Randall compiled a 64-14-2 record in two seasons, capturing state wrestling titles in 1980 and 1981. He was runner-up in the East Regionals in 1981 and received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, where he placed seventh to earn All-America honors. He finished the season at 36-9. Randall also won the Monarch Civitan Classic.
He lives in Rancocas, N.J., and works for the Philadelphia Area Construction Union. Randall graduated with a degree in business.
Salvia was a finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award, a four-time CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year, a first-team All-CAA selection three straight years, a third-team All-American in 1995 and a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American. As a senior, she ranked fourth nationally in assists. She helped guide the Lady Monarchs to four NCAA tournaments, including one title.
Salvia, who graduated with a 4.0 GPA in civil and environmental engineering, earned a B.A. in philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford University in 1998 as a Rhodes Scholar. She went on to receive a masters in environmental fluid mechanics from Stanford University. Salvia lives in Oakland, Calif., where she works for the Contra Costa Water District.
Sessoms, the schools fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,985 career points, poured in 35 in ODUs triple-overtime, upset win over No. 3-seed Villanova in the first round of the 1995 NCAA tournament. The Portsmouth native led the Monarchs in scoring (22.1) and rebounding (8.4) his senior year.
In his final season, Sessoms was named CAA Player of the Year, CAA Tournament MVP and honorable mention All-American. He earned a degree in recreation and leisure studies and currently plays in Israel.
The late Charlie Smith was the Monarchs main man when the game was on the line, winning three games with last-second heroics. In the 1985 Sun Belt Conference semifinal game against Alabama-Birmingham, with his team down 19 with less than 10 minutes to go, Smith capped off an ODU rally with two free throws in the final seconds for a 68-67 victory.
A freshman All-American, he went on to help lead the Monarchs to two NCAA and two NIT tournaments. He scored 1,250 career points.
Smith, who graduated with a degree in management information systems, died May 11, 1998, in his hometown of Wilmington, Del.
