New tennis scholarship honors Sugie Jarrett

Sugie Jarrett, the wife of Old Dominion athletic director Jim Jarrett, got a pleasant surprise early this year at the annual tennis appreciation party when tennis coach Darryl Cummings announced that a group of her friends had established a tennis scholarship in her name.

Thanks to the hard work of the endowment's organizers - and due in large measure to her own work through the years in promoting tennis and supporting local charities - the Sugie Jarrett Endowed Tennis Scholarship raised $31,000 in just four days.

"We established this endowment in Sugie Jarrett's name in appreciation of her involvement with the Old Dominion Scholarship Tournament since 1974," Cummings said. "In addition, Sugie has been the tournament director for many other charitable events."

A former tennis director at the Virginia Beach Tennis and Country Club, Jarrett has long been an ambassador of the sport in Hampton Roads, particularly at Old Dominion.

Not only is she married to the current athletic director, her father, Tom Scott, was the school's first director of athletics, Cummings pointed out. "As much as anyone, she bleeds the colors of Old Dominion," he said.

Donations to the Sugie Jarrett Endowed Tennis Scholarship may be mailed to Cummings in care of the Athletic Department, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Va. 23529.
