The following events took place between May and August:
70 Years Ago The Norfolk Division officially completes its first school year on June 5. A total of 125 men and 81 women comprise the first class. They are taught by a faculty of 10.
60 Years Ago William T. Hodges resigns in May as dean of the Norfolk Division for, admittedly, using his "executive discretion" to grant some students more academic credits than they had earned; Lewis W. Webb Jr. is appointed head of the summer school; and Charles J. Duke is made director of the college.
50 Years Ago The music department presents "The Pirates of Penzance" at the Center Theater, under the direction of Charles E. Vogan, and the college chorus performs Haydn's "Creation" at the First Lutheran Church.
40 Years Ago A special faculty committee chaired by Professor John West chooses "Monarchs" as the new name for athletic teams "to link the traditions of the past to the realities of the present."
30 Years Ago The Board of Visitors adopts a university mission statement that defines Old Dominion as "an urban university with the primary mission of meeting the educational and professional needs of its students and the region through excellence in teaching, scholarly research, and leadership in community service."
20 Years Ago At spring commencement, Harold J. Lampe, first dean of the School of Engineering and the man responsible for establishing and building the program, is honored by the university with an honorary Doctor of Science degree.
10 Years Ago President James V. Koch delivers the commencement address in place of conservative columnist James J. Kilpatrick, who had withdrawn earlier as speaker following faculty and student protests. Koch took the opportunity to focus his remarks on freedom of speech. (Kilpatrick was reinvited to campus in September as the inaugural speaker in the new President's Lecture Series.) o On June 5, Jon Hurst becomes the first Old Dominion golfer to reach the NCAA championships.
5 Years Ago Civil and environmental engineering major and field hockey standout Samantha Salvia, Old Dominion's first Rhodes Scholar, is recognized as the university's Outstanding Scholar. o George Dragas Jr. '56 and his brother, Marcus, are honored at the grand opening of the Dragas International Center.
