Jerry Venn '58 retired recently as professor of psychology and chair of the psychology department at Mary Baldwin College. He was with the school for 33 years. He and his wife, Elaine, live near Nellysford, Va.




1960s
Nancy A. Diamond '61 writes that her former husband, Hank Abbott, who taught in the Old Dominion history department in the 1960s, died in March 2000 of a brain tumor. Their daughter, Lea, gave birth to their first grandchild in June 2000. Last October, Nancy and her husband of 16 years, Howard, moved to Lake of the Woods, near Fredericksburg. They love being back in Virginia and living on a lake.

Joseph F. Clark '67 of Cheverly, Md., works for ITT Industries supporting FAA telecommunications development. He wrote last September that he has a granddaughter who was born in February 2000; another grandchild was due last November. He added that his son, Steve, was getting married in November.

Ross A. Kearney II '67 has retired after 32 years of teaching with Hampton City Schools. He was a political science teacher and chair of the social studies department at Phoebus High School. Ross was re-elected in May 2000 to a third four-year term on the Hampton City Council.

Nancy Caracciolo Warner '68 and her husband, Jim, have lived in Ipswich, Mass., for 25 years. He is a partner in an architectural firm in Portsmouth, N.H. They have two daughters: Julia, a 1998 Syracuse University graduate who lives in Los Angeles, and Anna, who will enter college in September. Nancy has worked at a number of independent schools and is currently stewardship coordinator at Governor Dummer Academy, the oldest secondary school in the country. Nancy adds, "We ski all winter in Maine. I still am in touch with some of my wonderful ODU/Chi Omega friends. We try to reunite once a year - somewhere where no one knows us."

Dean E. Cole '69 was appointed last September as manager of educational support services at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio. He previously served as clinical supervisor for Twin Valley Psychiatric System's Community Support Network. Dean is a retired Air Force pilot and lieutenant colonel with 23 years' experience.

Sandi Garber Howe '69 (M.S.Ed. '76 and '78) is president of the Virginia School Counselor Association. Her daughter, Lisa J. Howe '00, graduated from Old Dominion magna cum laude with a degree in biology.

Nora Cartledge Williams (M.S. '69, C.A.S. '75) celebrated her fifth "rebirthdate" last August - marking five years since having a lung transplant. Nora lives in Shady Side, Md.




1970s
James Harrison '70 has been named collection manager for the law firm of Garnes, Smith and Gardner, LLC. Active in Republican politics in Maryland, he was selected as an alternate delegate from the state's 4th Congressional District to the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia.

Roger G. Stroud '70 (M.S. '74), a principal with Clark Nexsen in Virginia Beach, was elected last summer to the Virginia Foundation for Architecture Inc. board of trustees.

Norman R. Baty '71 recently retired from the parish ministry but continues to serve as supply priest.

Candice Womack Dettloff '71 (M.S.Ed. '82), CLU, is president of the southeastern Virginia chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners, the only organization in Hampton Roads exclusively for women-owned businesses. The office is in Virginia Beach; 456-5005. Candy is a past member of the Old Dominion Alumni Association board of directors.

Kristine Anderson Stephens '71 has left teaching and, following her husband's retirement from the Navy, moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia. She wrote in January, "We live on 40 acres and now have almost 13 acres planted in vines. What a learning experience!"

David R. Tynch '71 was named First Citizen of Portsmouth for 2000. A native of the city, he is a partner with the law firm Cooper, Spong & Davis, and serves as president and director of the Greater Portsmouth Development Corporation. He is also active in numerous other community organizations. He is a past chairman of both the Portsmouth Partnership and the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce for Portsmouth, and currently is involved in the Mayor's Policy and Development Committee, Future of Hampton Roads and Portsmouth Schools Foundation, among others. David's wife, April Smith Tynch '71, is a special education teacher for kindergarten and first grade at Churchland Academy. Two of their children, Ashley and Dave, attend Old Dominion.

Mona Estes '73 is a family nurse practitioner at the Chesapeake Health Department's South Norfolk Health Center. She enjoys being the grandmother of Lizzy, age 5.

Donna Heuneman '73 was named executive director of the National Association of Developmental Disabilities Councils in October.

Ted Jongbloed '73 retired from the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel in 1993. He has since moved into the technology arena and now supports the 54 school districts in the greater Houston area as coordinator for instructional technology at the Region IV Education Service Center.

Hamilton R. Dwyer Jr. '74 merged his CPA firm on Jan. 1, 2000, with Eggleston Smith, P.C., an 80-employee regional firm with offices in Newport News, Williamsburg, Suffolk and Smithfield. He continues to practice in the Chesapeake office, where he is the managing shareholder.

William G. '74 (M.B.A. '85) and Beverly B. Ouzts '79 now live in Newport News, where Bill is a vice president and investment officer at First Union Securities. He is a partner in the investment consulting group of Reed & Ouzts. Beverly works in the preschool children's program at Grace United Methodist Church.

M. Sanford Richardson '74 was named last summer as chief financial officer at OOP, an innovator of enterprise software and services for online business-to-business applications, located in Chesapeake. Sanford is a CPA and certified business valuation analyst with 20 years' experience in financial management.

D. Martin F. Smith '74 has been promoted to supervising classification and compensation analyst with the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Personnel Services Administration, at agency headquarters in Baltimore. He was elected vice president of the Maryland chapter for the American Society for Public Administration. Martin and his wife, Joyce, live in Jessup, Md.

Rev. Nancy Clark '75 began serving as associate pastor at New Hanover Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsville, Va., on March 1. She and her family live at 9262 Sentry Station Road, Mechanicsville, Va. 23116.

Denny P. Cobb '75 writes, "I flew to Chicago in April 2000, rented a convertible and retraced Route 66 all the way from Chicago to Los Angeles. I spent eight days driving all 2,448 miles. It was a great trip."

Scott R. Sechrist '75 (M.S. '89), associate professor of medical laboratory sciences and environmental health at Old Dominion, defended his doctoral dissertation at the College of William and Mary last July. He received a doctorate in education and was hooded at the May 2001 commencement. The title of his dissertation is "Organizational Citizenship Behaviors and Technologically Proficient University Faculty." Part of his dissertation research was published as a chapter in "Case Studies on Information Technology in Higher Education: Implications for Policy and Practice" (Lisa Petrides, editor; Columbia University).

Beverly Black Wooddell '76 recently completed graduate study through the University of Virginia to become endorsed in gifted education. She was selected for inclusion in the 2000 edition of "Who's Who Among America's Teachers."

Louise Foxwell '77 was recently appointed coordinator of Discovery Research Project for Somerset County, Maine, where she lives in Skowhegan. Discovery Research is a grant-supported project to develop a database and resource directory of arts, artisans and cultural heritage in the county. Louise continues to teach music privately and performs extensively throughout central Maine. She is employed by Griffin Associates, registered investment advisers, in Waterville, Maine.

Georgia Christie (M.S.Ed. '78) is coordinator of the Elementary Social Studies Program for Virginia Beach City Public Schools.

Bill Shea '78, a member of the U.S. handcycling team, won the handcycling division of the Ultra Marathon Cycling Association World 24-Hour Cycling Championships last September. He completed 213 miles, a course record for a handcyclist and a personal best. bshea@warpnet.net

Connie Walker '78 (M.S. '98) joined Goodman & Co., LLP, last summer as a senior associate in the Norfolk office. She previously was a senior accountant with Edmondson, Ledbetter & Ballard of Norfolk.

Robert Blake '79 works in the information technology area as manager of the project office for Northwest Airlines. He says the position has allowed him to pursue his passion to travel. Bob and his wife, Judy, have lived in the Twin Cities area for more than three years. Bambi Lynn Zarger Thompson '79, assistant principal at Walker Elementary School in Gloucester, Va., received the 1999-2000 Outstanding Assistant Principal Award from the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals. Bambi is pursuing a doctor of education degree at George Washington University. She and her husband, Robert, live in Cobbs Creek. Bambi has a son, Shane, who is a junior at Radford University, and two grown stepchildren.




1980s
John '80 and Donna Austin Cleveland '80 live near Los Angeles, where John stays busy with art work rental and sales to the motion picture and television industry, and Donna is an insurance broker in the construction group of AON Risk Services. Richard V. Gregory '80 is director of the School of Textiles, Fiber and Polymer Science at Clemson University. He also serves as the thrust leader of the National Science Foundation Center for Advanced Fibers and Film.

Rick LaClair '80, CIC, CPCU, has joined CompFirst as director of sales and marketing for Virginia and Tennessee. He lives in Oilville, Va., with his wife and two children. He lists his new e-mail address as vaclair@mindspring.com.

Thomas McHugh '80 (M.S. '84) received a Ph.D. in chemistry from Arizona State University in 1995 and now works as a programmer and research specialist for Information Spectrum Inc. in Virginia Beach. He also is a part-time chemistry instructor at the Norfolk campus of Tidewater Community College.

Bill Olcheski '80 has been promoted to senior oncology account manager with SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals. He has a certified medical representative degree and is an ongoing participant in the Philadelphia College of Sciences and Pharmacy's continuing education program. John Lippincott '81 lives in Laytonsville, Md., with his wife, Kathy, daughter, Jamie, and son, Kevin. He is the director of construction at Giant Food, a major grocery store chain in the Washington, D.C., area, New Jersey and Delaware. John was interviewed for a story ("A Giant Expansion for the Ahold Family") in the May-June 2000 issue of Retail Operations & Construction, a trade publication for which he serves on the editorial board. Jim '82 and Susan Farmer Wachter '80 returned to the U.S. last year after two years with the Defense Department in Stuttgart, Germany, and now live in Fredericksburg, Va. Jim heads the DOD's Wage and Salary Division in Rosslyn, and Susan teaches middle school science with Stafford Public Schools. Their daughter, LibbyLane, is in the sixth grade. While in Germany, Jim was the theater civilian personnel adviser to the U.S. European commander, and Susan taught calculus at the American High School in Stuttgart.

Pam Kozak Decker '83 wrote last summer that, after raising her sons and working on the Navajo Reservation for several years, she now teaches nursing at Boise State University and is a doctoral candidate at Nova Southeastern University. Laurie Pisarek Singel '83 is in her third year as an instructor at the University of Texas Health Science Center, part of the San Antonio School of Nursing. She teaches the senior-level Generic Program and the Flexible Process Program (RN to BSN). Her mother, Shirley Pisarek, who once taught nursing at Old Dominion, recently completed her Ph.D. in nursing.

Phyllis Kunkler Slachter '83 and her husband, Wade, announce the birth of their second daughter, Kendall Grace, on July 17, 2000. She joins Holland Anne, 5. Phyllis is a marketing teacher at Hopewell (Va.) High School. She recently received a Distinguished Service Award from Hopewell City Public Schools, and served on the state curriculum writing team for sports, entertainment and recreation marketing. Phyllis received her M.A. in educational administration and supervision from George Washington University in January 1999. She plans to pursue administration in the near future. Angela Brannock '84 is the head of alumni relations at St. Anne's-Belfield School in Charlottesville, Va. Her children, Tom, 14, Morgan, 12, and Becca, 12, attend school there. Angela's husband, Tommy, is a realtor with Century-21-Albemarle Properties.

Alfred W. Lange '84 lives in Jupiter Farms, Fla., with his wife, Diane, and children: Elizabeth, 8, Emily, 5, and Erik, 1. He has been with Home Depot nine years and is manager of the store in Delray Beach. After his graduation from Old Dominion, he spent much of his time traveling in western and eastern Europe "during the height of the cold war."

Jackie Cerny O'Hare '84 lives in Prince George County, Va., with her children Ryan and Caitlin. She works on the Internet/Intranet Services Team at Bank of America in Richmond.

Jeanne E. Harmon '85 completed her M.B.A. last August at Wilmington College in Delaware and was recently appointed lecturer in the Department of English and Modern Languages at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. She also is the adviser to the student radio station and the student news magazine. Jeanne and her husband, Jerome Copes, have a son and daughter: Princeton, 6, and Morgan, 4.

Kim Johnston Babb '86 lives with her husband, James, and daughter, Jordan, in Virginia Beach. She recently celebrated her 11th year as a probation and parole officer. Kim also coordinates her office's volunteer and intern program. Kim and James have started their own business, Babb Home Inspections. They offer a discounted rate to Old Dominion alumni.

Shirley Lefler Bazdar '86 was recently appointed director of vocational and adult education for Loudoun County (Va.) Public Schools.

Dennis R. Hooks '86 is taking night classes at Old Dominion to get an M.B.A. in finance and management accounting.

Donna Garnett Mahan '86, after nine years with Goodman & Co. in Norfolk, has moved to the Charlottesville, Va., area with her husband, Jeff Mahan '89, and their children, Jeff and Shane. Donna is a supervisor with Hantzmon, Wiebel & Co., CPAs.

John M. Profilet '86, SIOR, vice president and partner of S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co., was elected to the board of directors of the Commercial Real Estate Council for a one-year term. John is responsible for office leasing and brokerage within the office and industrial division of S.L. Nusbaum.

Dave '86 and Clare Erickson Vosteen '85 write, "Hello to our ODU friends John '86 and Katie Erickson Korka '86 in the D.C. area and Tony '86 and Mary Korka Marinello '85 in Missouri. We're one big happy family with 12 kids between us - it all began at ODU!"

Anthony L. Baird '87 lives in Tucson, Ariz., and works as a help desk analyst for ARC, a technology and management staffing services company (www.arcnow.com). He provides internal IT/computer support for the Cross Country Automotive Services call centers (www.ccgroup.com) in Tucson and Boston ("a roadside service like AAA"), answering calls from employees who have computer problems.

Jonathan '87 and MaryAnne Ranzetta Cherry '88 have two sons: Adam, 8, and David, 6.

Jeffrey K. Chesser '87 announces the birth of a son, Kyle Nathan, on July 27, 2000. He joins brothers Mark, 6, and Adam, 3. Jeffrey wrote last August, "I will be moving to Ireland the last week of September and I will miss everyone at ODU, especially those I knew in the APB. Rosemarie Scotti Hughes (Ph.D. '87) will assume the presidency of the American Association of State Counseling Boards July 1. She had been vice chair of the Virginia Board of Counseling. Rosemarie is dean of the School of Psychology and Counseling at Regent University in Virginia Beach.

Janet Pieklik Lowin '87 lives in Gilbert, Ariz., with her husband, Mike, twin boys Andrew and John, 4, and daughter, Ava Marie, 2. Janet works part time for Bank One as a financial adviser. Mike is a teacher. They live at 1518 S. Dove St., Gilbert, Ariz. 85233.

John Bruns Jr. '88, M.D., is an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and a neuroepidemiology research fellow at Columbia University. John also is a master of public health student at Columbia, focusing on traumatic brain injury clinical research. He and his wife, Sandra, were expecting their first child in June and in March purchased a co-op apartment in Riverdale, N.Y.

Lt. Cmdr. Patrick A. Crowell '88 is an air tactical plans officer with the COMSEVENTHFLT's staff in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He has worked for American Airlines nine years as an accountant and systems analyst. Patrick and Sharon, his wife of five years, enjoy skiing and traveling. She has a journalism degree from the University of Georgia and was scheduled to graduate in spring 2001 from the University of Texas and begin work as a registered nurse.

Kasey Lai '88 wrote in October that she finally received her CPA license after taking time off to raise her daughters, Christine, 7, and Victoria, 4. She is married to Robert T. Lai '87.

Timothy K. Vogt '88 wrote in November that after eight years in the Navy, he has become manager for Nabisco's HQ distribution planning group in East Hanover, N.J. Tim, who is still an LCDR reservist out of Fort Dix, N.J., lives with his wife, Dee, and children, Benjamin, 4, and Meredith, 2, in East Stroudsburg, Pa.

Sean Dennis '89 (M.A. '92), in 1999, left the Web design/e-learning company he helped start to accept a position as a GS-12 program development specialist for the NOAA Coastal Services Center in Charleston, S.C. He was married in October "to a great gal named Julia (a Chapel Hill grad, but otherwise a wonderful person)." Sean writes that they own a home near the historic downtown area, and that he is learning to play the trumpet. Jamie Marshall '89 has accepted a job with Schlumberger Technical Consulting, where he is responsible for the start-up of the firm's North American consulting practice. Jamie recently completed an executive program in information technology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

George F. Miller '89 lives in Chesterfield County, Va., where he is a senior clinician with the Mental Health Division of the Chesterfield Community Services Board. He earned his master's of social work degree from Norfolk State in 1996. His wife, Lori, a 1986 Memphis State University graduate, is an accountant and accounting manager with Coca-Cola in Richmond and is completing her M.B.A. from Averett College of Roanoke via a satellite campus in Richmond. Deborah Rooney '89 wrote in August that after teaching special education in Virginia Beach for 10 years, she resigned to take a position as sports director for Special Olympics Virginia. 1990s
Capt. Charles H. Battiste '90 completed an 11-month tour of duty in Honduras in February. One of his jobs was to coordinate humanitarian de-mining activities for Central America. Brian Devir '90 sells corporate sponsorships for the NBA's Utah Jazz. He joined the Jazz in 1998 after working for the Houston Rockets. "Still dating college girls!" he writes.

Julie DoBias-Guy '90 (M.P.T. '98) works as a physical therapist with infants and toddlers, a job she began in October 1998 after working six years with children and adolescents at a brain injury rehabilitation/psychiatric hospital. Also in 1998 she married Tad Guy '88. They live in Williamsburg, Va.

Dori Maxon '90, PT, PCS, M.Ed., received the 1999 Tsunami Award from the Aquatic Therapy and Rehab Institute for showing exceptional innovation, creativity and implementation of new ideas in the aquatic therapy industry.

Brian James Kimble '91 and his wife, Colleen, announce the birth of a son, Bryce Conrad, on July 26, 2000. They live in Boston, Va.

Chuck Piotrowski '91 left his job last year as assistant curator of manuscripts for a historical society in Cleveland and moved to Santa Cruz, Calif., for a position in the e-business strategy group at Seagate Technology, the world's largest maker of disc drives. He wrote last September, "I give thanks every day for the research skills I learned in the history program and the diplomatic skills Model U.N. taught me. ... I am very glad that Ted [Ted Atkinson '92] has taken the Falkenstein for President reins. You can count on my support!"

Kennard S. Brackney Sr. (Ph.D. '93) was installed last September as the second president of the Hampton Roads School of Biblical Studies. The school opened five years ago under the leadership of B.H. Struthers (M.S.Ed.'71) and Brackney, and has since grown from about 30 students to nearly 700.

Darren J. Klink '93 has joined the law firm of Williams, Mullen, Clark & Dobbins as marketing manager for Hampton Roads. He is responsible for directing and implementing the firm's marketing and client service programs. He previously was marketing director for a Norfolk-based accounting firm. Darren serves on the boards of Greenbrier North YMCA and the Kiwanis Club of Ocean View Beach, and is a steering committee member of the Downtown Norfolk Council.

Mike '93 and Donna Pearson Lee '91 moved to Richmond, Va., in fall 1999. Gregory McNabb '95 was elected last fall to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Selection is based on scholastic excellence as well as evidence of compassionate concern for patients, colleagues and the community. An ensign in the Navy, Gregory expected to receive his medical degree this spring from the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Md., and be promoted to lieutenant. He will remain in Bethesda to do an internal medicine internship at the National Naval Medical Center.

Francis A. Roberts (M.S.Ed. '95) has been promoted to vice president and director of operations (Hampton Roads) for Battlespace Inc., an engineering and technical services company specializing in unmanned aerial vehicles.

Brett '95 and Amy Brisach Scholz '97 announce the birth of a daughter, Gracyn Angela, on July 8, 2000. She was born one week after their relocation to Sonoma, Calif., and Brett's promotion to director of finance and accounting for Marriott International.

Victor I. Marcos '96 has joined Clark Nexsen's marketing department as a graphic designer. He is responsible for the design and maintenance of the firm's corporate Web site, as well as the design of client project-based Web sites. He also develops print and promotional materials for the international architectural, engineering and interior design firm, which is headquartered in Norfolk. Victor previously worked for the Employment Guide's CareerWeb, an online recruitment site in Norfolk.

Wendy McNamara '96 joined the Army as a military policeman in January 1998, did basic training and advanced individual training at Fort McClellan, and graduated from MP School in May 1998. She completed her first duty station at Carlisle Barracks, Pa., in April 2000. Wendy is now assigned to Shape, Belgium, where she is a residential guard for the SACEUR, Gen. Ralston.

Cynthia Ann Prather '96 is a geologist at Okland Oil Co. in Oklahoma City, and is vice president of the Geophysical Society of Oklahoma City. Cynthia and Jeremiah Baker, of Moore, Okla., are planning a Sept. 1 wedding in Edmond, Okla.

Tucker Carter '97 has been promoted to senior claim representative with State Farm Insurance and transferred from Charlottesville, Va., to the Norfolk claim office. He completed AIC designation through AICPCU.

Robert B. Hurwitt (M.S.Ed. '97) recently completed his third year of teaching fifth grade at Great Bridge Intermediate School in Chesapeake.

Kevin C.J. Lee '97 works in the shipping/receiving department for the Fairfax County (Va.) Public Schools library.

Louie Louchart '97 retired from the Navy as a CWO3 engineering technician in October 1998. That August, he joined Michelin Retread Technologies in Duncan, S.C., as an equipment engineer. Last August he joined the Robert Bosch Corp. in Anderson, S.C., as a senior equipment coordinator for the low-temperature CO-fired ceramics department, which manufactures ABS systems for most major automobile manufacturers.

Anne Windover '97 earned a master's degree in physical education from Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y., where she also was the assistant women's lacrosse coach. She currently teaches physical education and coaches women's lacrosse at Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y.

Jennifer Ehret '98 (M.S.Ed. '99) and her husband, Rick, announce the birth of a daughter, Jessica, on Sept. 25, 2000. She joins a brother, Nick, who is 5. The family moved in January 2000 to Memphis, Tenn., where Jennifer teaches first grade. Rick is a Navy chief.

Tom Kwasny '98 has been the quality assurance manager at Moon Engineering Co. in Portsmouth since January 1998. His wife, Corrine, is an assistant vice president with Marsh USA in Norfolk. They have two sons, Stefan Allen and Rocky Avery Michael.

Brian D. Lyons '98 says the following headline best describes his recent activities: "Former psychology student teaches self computer programming as a postgraduate and lands career position at Cablevision Systems Corp." He also has launched a sole proprietorship, providing Web application development services to businesses and individuals.

John M. McGovern III '98 works in Fredericksburg, Va., as a firefighter and lives in Woodbridge, Va., where he volunteers as a firefighter. John also substitute teaches for the Prince William County Schools. He plans to make his career in Fredericksburg. "In my spare time I am usually hanging out with my girlfriend or going to the gym or jogging."

Jacqueline D. Skinner (Ph.D. '98) was appointed last August as associate director of the Consortium for the Advancement of Private Higher Education, a grant-making organization in Washington, D.C., that helps foundations and corporations foster improvement and reform in private liberal arts colleges and universities. Her responsibilities include program development and administration, and research on issues of importance to private higher education. Jacqueline previously had served as associate dean of students at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., since 1997.

John Yarbro (M.S. '98) retired from the Navy submarine force in 1999. He is a production department manager at Michelin Tire Corp. in Sandy Springs, S.C.

Samaria Hunter '99, an ensign in the Navy, earned top honors last year for the Navy's Surface Warfare Division Officer's Course in Newport, R.I. She received the Adm. Arleigh Burke Award, which is presented to the officer in each class who has exhibited the finest professional performance characteristics and leadership abilities. As part of the award, she also received the Navy Achievement Medal. Samaria is currently serving a two-year division officer tour aboard the USS Mount Whitney, homeported in Norfolk.

Monica Jill Brinkley Oyler '99 was promoted in September to coordinator of special gifts at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Mich. She helps raise funds for campus programs and construction and is part of a team working to complete a $50 million capital campaign over the next five years. Warren Bryant '00 is a mixed signal product test engineer with Analog Devices, a Boston company that designs high-performance semiconductors and software.
