Hall of Famers

Five outstanding athletes were inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame this spring. Attending the ceremony were George Green '65, Robin Smith '93 and Neil Paynter '91. Green established school records in the mile and half-mile and was a five-time cross country conference champion. He owns Green Things, develops Web sites and coaches high school track and field in Coronado, Calif. Smith helped lead Old Dominion to three straight national titles in field hockey and was a three-time NCAA All-Tournament selection. She served as an assistant coach last season for the Lady Monarchs. Paynter, one of the best defensive soccer players in school history, helped lead Old Dominion to an 18-2 record and a top-10 ranking. He was the CAA Tournament MVP in 1991. Paynter teaches elementary health and physical education in his native Bermuda. Also inducted, but unable to attend, were Wayne Gomes '94, now in his fourth season as a relief pitcher with the Philadelphia Phillies, and former All-American wrestler Peter Horst '93, who teaches art and coaches wrestling in Hillington, Pa.
