Pereira named CAA Coach of the Year for women’s soccer
Women’s soccer coach Joe Pereira was named Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year for 2004. Junior forward Laura Beeman (Chalfont, Pa.) and junior defender Kim Snyder (Virginia Beach) were named to the women’s soccer First Team All-CAA.

Pereira, who also won the honor in 1998, led his 2004 squad to a 9-8-2 record. The team’s 5-3-1 CAA mark was the first winning conference record for ODU since the 2000 season and helped the Lady Monarchs qualify for the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2001. In one of the closest CAA women’s soccer races in history, the Lady Monarchs’ 16 points were only two fewer than that of No. 1 seed VCU.

The Lady Monarchs won four straight CAA games for the first time in program history and briefly took the lead in the standings in the penultimate weekend of the regular season. ODU qualified for the CAA tournament as a No. 6 seed, falling to No. 3 seed William and Mary, 1-0.

The second team NSCAA All-American led the Monarchs in scoring with seven goals, five assists and 19 points as ODU compiled a 13-6-2 record, reaching the CAA finals and earning a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament, before losing in overtime to Duke in the second round.

Field hockey team’s Sensenig an All-American
The fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils defeated the 12th-ranked Lady Monarchs, 5-3, in the first round of the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship in November. Second Team All-CAA honoree, sophomore midfielder Caroline Nichols (Virginia Beach), led ODU with two goals.
The Lady Monarchs concluded the 2004 campaign with a 13-8 overall record.

Sophomore midfielder Dana Sensenig (Denver, Pa.) was named Third Team All-American by the National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association and Women’s Field Hockey.com.

The All-America honor added to an already impressive list of accolades the second-year Lady Monarch garnered for her efforts in the 2004 campaign. Sensenig was a First Team All-CAA pick, a First Team All-South Region member and a CAA All-Tournament Team pick.

She led Old Dominion in points (43), assists (13) and goals (15). She also topped the CAA charts in assists per game (0.62 ) and ended the season ranked second in goals per game (0.71) and points per game (2.05).
