Event Happenings

1. Old Dominion’s Alonzo Brandon ’85, vice president for development, Claire Geiger Ackiss ’99, director of alumni relations, and Hunter Brunick, director of alumni outreach, met with New York area alumni during a visit to the Big Apple in January. Joining them at Tavern on the Green were John Kollmansperger, Bill Steinberg ’87; Doug Wedeck ’85, Renée Warren ’87 and Virginia Quiambao ’04.

2. Laurence M. Bragg ’49, G. William Whitehurst, a longtime ODU faculty member and currently Kaufman Lecturer in Public Affairs, and Phillip Parker ’63 reunited Dec. 13 at a holiday reception for former students from the Norfolk Division at the Barry M. Kornblau Alumni Center.

3. Sandra Pierce Mathis ’77 (M.S.Ed. ’82), from Virginia Beach City Public Schools, spoke to some of ODU’s newest alumni at the Black Alumni Council induction ceremony in December.

4. Tommy Newsom ’48, backed by other local musicians, provided the entertainment at ODU’s Founders’ Day dinner. Newsom, who now lives in Portsmouth, was a fixture in “The Tonight Show” band throughout Johnny Carson’s run as host.

5. A few loyal alums from the Philadelphia area were on hand Jan. 5 to help cheer on the Monarchs when they visited Drexel University. Those attending included John Cranmer ’88, Bill Dengler ’89, Andrea Dalton ’94, Mike ’89 (M.B.A. ’93) and Lori Schmid ’91.
