1960s
Nancy Winfree Diamond 61 has become an active member of the painters group of Windmore Foundation for the Arts in Culpeper, Va., since moving back to Virginia from Michigan in 2000. She has participated in several shows at the Orange (Va.) Arts Center, and was invited to submit three paintings for the centers 2004 Autumn Showcase of Regional Artists.
Leo Anthony 62 of Virginia Beach was inducted into the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame in October.
James R. Darden 63 (M.S.Ed. 69) has been named to the advisory board for Gateway Bank & Trust Co.s Virginia Beach center at Shore Drive.
Wayne Foshay 67 was elected last fall as treasurer of the Kiwanis Club of Pembroke in Virginia Beach. He is vice president of Beachtowne Builders.
Lynn Simonds Hulsey 68 recently retired after 25 years in the emergency department at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. I plan to spend my time in volunteer activities and classes to develop my education in various areas of interest. She also plans to spend more time with her two grandchildren.

Boyd Nix 68 recently accepted a position with the Office of Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition and has relocated to the Washington, D.C., area. His new address is 7461 Gadsby Square, Alexandria, VA 22315.
Margaret Windley 68 (M.A. 92) was reappointed to the Portsmouth History Commission in 2003 for a three-year term. She served as the chair in 2003 and most recently was secretary/treasurer. Her new e-mail address is windley@verizon.net.
Patricia Rapp Thompson 69 says her most recent work has been as a case manager at a homeless center and supervisor of a homeless shelter for women and children. She lives in California.
Linda Yates 69 was elected secretary of the Ceramic Designers Association of Hampton Roads.

Phyllis Durham Barham 70 (M.S. 81) teaches skills lab content and serves as the chief academic adviser for all undergraduate nursing majors at Old Dominion.
Arifeen M. Daneshyar (M.A. 70), Ph.D., was recognized last fall as Professor of the Year at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, where he has taught economics for more than 20 years.
Mary Smith Ferguson 70 retired from her staff nurse position at Chesapeake General Hospital in October 2003 after 27 years. She now is a hospice volunteer at the hospital and also helps with the buddy program, which matches breast cancer survivors with newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
Barbara Hazlett Sheppard 70 works as a certified family nurse practitioner for a urologist. She and her husband have two children, both of whom have earned masters degrees: one in physical therapy from ODU and the other in business from UVa.
T.A. Ted Grell Jr. 71 was named chairman of the Virginia Association of Community Banks. He is president and CEO of Resource Bank in Virginia Beach.
Ashby Kilgore 71 (M.S.Ed. 83) has been appointed chief for strategic planning with the Newport News School System.
Bruce T. Bishop 73 was selected last summer as co-chairman and faculty member of the Defense Research Institutes International Asbestos Medicine Seminar. He is a partner at the Norfolk law office of Willcox & Savage.
Mona Johnson Estes 73 recently worked as a nurse practitioner, but since September has been with Amerigroup Corp. as an authorization assistant. She lives in Virginia Beach.
Michael K. Imperial 74 has joined the staff of First Community Banks loan production office at Town Point Center in Norfolk as senior vice president of commercial services.
Frank Ryan 74 has joined the downtown Norfolk location of Beecroft & Bull, a mens clothing retailer.
Martin F. Smith 74 has transferred from his former position as a supervising personnel officer with the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Office of Human Resources, in Baltimore, to a health policy analyst position with the Anne Arundel County Health Department in Annapolis, Md.
Jerry L.M. Phillips 75 (M.S. 78) passed the certification exams in October to become a Sun certified system administrator and network administrator.
Ralph Powers 75 has been appointed director of technical training and education at LifeNet, a nonprofit agency that coordinates organ and tissue donation in Virginia.
Richard E. Shaver 75 has worked for the Veterans Administration as a psychiatric nurse for 30 years. He is currently the nurse coordinator for a 10-bed post-traumatic stress residential rehabilitation program at the Baltimore VA Medical Center.
Thomas E. Smead Jr. 75 has worked as an emergency room nurse since September 2001 at the Acoma-Canoncito-Laguna Service Unit in San Fidel, N.M. He plans to retire from his civil service position in June and move to Wyoming, where he has built a home and started a woodworking business, People and Pets Furniture.
Bruce Carothers 76, 87 has joined the Hampton Roads office of Hermes Abrasives Ltd. as national sales manager. He is responsible for sales in the United Sates and Mexico. Hermes is based in Hamburg, Germany.
Donald Fithian 76 is a civil servant (GS-15) with the Department of the Army and has less than two years to retirement. He wrote in August that he had completed a six-month tour with the Coalition Provisional Authority as the chief financial officer in the Program Management Office, where he was responsible for executing $18.4 billion in Iraqi reconstruction funds. In February 2004, he and his wife, Pamela, celebrated their 25th anniversary. They live in Key West, Fla., and have two children: Don, 23, a federal civil service firefighter at Fort Campbell, Ky., and Sarah, 20, a college student in Tampa, Fla.
James Perkinson (M.S.Ed. 76) has been promoted to dean of academics at Tidewater Community Colleges Chesapeake campus.
Janie Brown 77 of Virginia Beach is an area account manager in hospital sales for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. She has been in pharmaceutical sales for 20 years.
Mary G. Commander 77 and Elisa D. Carlson have opened Commander & Carlson, Attorneys at Law, at 5442 Tidewater Drive in Norfolk. The practice specializes in family law, adoptions and workers compensation.
Cathy Sheppard Guntow 77 has been a neonatal nurse practitioner for 17 years and is now at Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, Fla. She and her husband, Roger, have two children: Will, 17, and Rebecca, 14. Weve been in Lake Mary for 16 years. Not even two hurricanes can uproot us! But we are getting a new roof.
Sandra Pierce Mathis 77 (M.S.Ed. 82, C.A.S. 99) received a doctor of education degree from George Washington University in August 2003. She is employed by Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
JoAnn Kennedy Randolph 77 is on the nursing faculty at Northern Kentucky University. She has two college-age sons who live in Washington, D.C., and Cincinnati. JoAnn enjoys playing soccer several times per week.
Mary Llew Roberts 77 is nationally certified as a sexuality educator by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists. She does private consulting, is an adjunct faculty member at Norfolk State and a Norfolk Public Schools Family Life Education teacher trainee. Mary has six grandchildren. Still enjoying life and trying to save the world.
Sam Bowers Jr. (M.S.Ed. 78) was named last year by the U.S. Air Force as one of the 250 top technology education teachers in the country. He is an industrial technology teacher at North Augusta (S.C.) High School.
Susan Brassfield Davis 78 (M.S. 85), formerly Susan B. Taylor, was promoted to captain in the U.S. Navy Reserves and was mobilized for active duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom in 2003. Her civilian job is as nurse manager for the occupational health department at Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar, Calif. Susan has two children: Jay, 21, and Rusty, 17.
Thomas S. Flournoy 78, P.E., joined STV Inc. last fall as manager of the firms Vienna, Va., office. He is responsible for operations, administration and business development. Part of the companys Baltimore-based Atlantic region, STVs Vienna office specializes in transportation and infrastructure projects in the Washington, D.C., area. Thomas lives in Arlington.
Teena M. McGuinness 78 is an associate professor at the University of South Alabama College of Nursing, where she is the track coordinator for the online psychiatric nurse practitioner program.
Edward W. Pence Jr. (M.E. 78) has been elected vice chairman of the Council of American Structural Engineers. He is senior vice president of Stroud, Pence & Associates Ltd. in Virginia Beach.
Diane E. Bengele 79 has joined Advantis Construction Co. as director of business development. Advantis is a real estate firm that leases and manages commercial real estate. Its construction company has offices in Norfolk and Newport News.
Beverly Kiernan (M.A. 79) was elected president of the Kiwanis Club of Pembroke in Virginia Beach. She is an insurance sales executive with Insco Group Inc.
William J. Pawlyshyn 79 works as a nurse practitioner in long-term care facilities (geriatric/psychiatric). He is an ordained minister and a pastor of FaithWalk Ministries, an adult outreach to those in need in the Cape Cod, Mass., area.
Ila Meyer Skinner 79 was promoted to associate research scientist in the RD&E Flavor Research Group at Philip Morris Inc. in Richmond, Va. She presented her latest research at the EuroAnalysis XIII Conference in Salamanca, Spain, in September. Ila continues to serve as chair of the Richmond Chromatography Discussion Group (www.rcdg.org) and lives in Chester, Va.
1980s
Diane Duncan Cantwell 80 recently transitioned from a quality management coordinator position to a newly implemented position as coding and billing auditor for the Sumner Regional Health System in Gallatin, Tenn.
Molly Larkin 80 was elected last summer as vice president of Norfolks Generic Theatre board of directors. She is a nurse at Sentara Health Management.
Frank White 80 (M.B.A. 84) and his wife, Cindy, announce the birth of a son, Carson Andrew, on May 25, 2004.
Kathleen Wetherby Bentley 81 has worked as a nurse-midwife/nurse practitioner at Deaconess Womens Clinic in Spokane, Wash., for seven years, doing womens health and obstetrics. She has delivered more than 600 babies. Kathleen has a son who is an accounting/Japanese major at the University of San Francisco and a daughter, 17.
Larry Daniels 81 (M.S.Ed. 93, M.S. 95) is completing his doctoral studies at Hampton University, where he continues to teach in the pediatric nurse practitioner program. He is doing funded research on the beliefs of parents regarding the transportation of their children in motor vehicles. In October, an article he wrote advising new fathers about traveling with their babies appeared in Baby Connections, the baby registry magazine of Wal-Mart. He began a two-year term July 1 as treasurer of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners; he is completing his second term as president of the local chapter. Last February, Larry returned to the Philippines with a team of colleagues for the continuation of the emergency medical technician program he started there in 1994 with Operation Smile International. He plans to return to the Philippines in February and June 2005 for additional training and fellowship.
Joanne M. Diddlemeyer (M.S.Ed. 81) was named last summer as academic dean for languages, mathematics and science at Tidewater Community College, Norfolk campus.
Dr. Elizabeth Lanoue 81 has been named to the governing board of directors of Childrens Hospital of The Kings Daughters Health System in Norfolk. She is a family practice physician with Maryview Medcare.
Patricia Wray (M.S. 81) was elected last summer as secretary of Norfolks Generic Theatre board of directors. She is a physical therapist.
Sharon Q. Adams (M.P.A. 82) received the Liberty Bell Award last year from the Virginia Beach Bar Association for her lobbying efforts against animal cruelty. She is director of the Virginia Beach Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Mary Jaquet Gibson 82 has returned to ODU to pursue a masters degree after working as an occupational health nurse for 12 years. Her goal is to become a family nurse practitioner. Mary and her husband have traveled extensively in Europe and enjoy time at their beach house in North Carolina. They recently celebrated their 20th anniversary.
Susan Kemp Lakeman 82, formerly Susan K. Branyan, lists her new address as 801 River Strand, Chesapeake, VA 23320.
Eileen Plotts Phelps 82 lives in Jacksonville, Fla., where she is an RN consultant for mentally and developmentally disabled adults in a group-home setting.
Jeff Ainslie 83 was named last summer as board chair of Opportunity Inc. He is president of financial operations for Ainslie-Widener. Opportunity Inc. promotes workforce development strategies in south and western Hampton Roads.
Betsy Duke (M.B.A. 83) was elected chairman of the American Bankers Association for 2004-05, becoming the first female chair in ABA history. Betsy is executive vice president for community bank development at SouthTrust Bank in Virginia Beach.
Stephen Ryan 83 was named in September as vice president of business development for GeoTrust Inc., a leader in identity and security solutions for e-business and the worlds second largest certificate authority. He is responsible for driving revenue and market share through strategic alliances with distribution, original equipment manufacturers and technology partners.
Marc Schwartz 83 is co-owner of Memory Lane Sports, which opened last year in Virginia Beachs Pembroke Mall.
Suzanne Buck Short 83 has worked since 1984 on the newborn intensive care unit at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, where she is currently a clinical nurse IV. She became a certified RN last August in high-risk neonatal intensive care.
Chris Snyder Starr 83 retired from doctors office work as an orthopedic nurse in 1997 and has since volunteered as a clinic aide in her daughters school.
William E. Gambrell IV 84 was elected last year as vice president of the Old Coast Guard Station museums board of directors. He is the owner of Tautogs Restaurant in Virginia Beach.
Steven P. Letourneau 84 was elected last year as president of the Old Coast Guard Station museums board of directors. He is with the Virginia Beach law firm John D. Hooker & Associates.
Kenneth Montgomery 84 retired from the U.S. Navy in 2003 and is employed as health care effectiveness coordinator at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, N.C.
Teresa Stockebrand 84 is chief flight nurse with St. Anthony Hospitals Flight for Life in Denver, for whom she has worked the last 12 years. She flies 24 to 36 hours a week. Teresa also enjoys teaching at the paramedic and nursing levels.
Craig Herrick 85, U.S. Navy, was selected last summer for promotion to captain. He is supply officer on the USS Peleliu and lives in San Diego with his wife, Susan. suppo@peleliu.navy.mil

Joseph Barlow Jr. 86 was elected last year as vice president of the Virginia Peanut Growers Association.
Paul E. Bibbins Jr. (Ph.D. 86, ODU/EVMS) became dean of Ohio Universitys 1,000-student Eastern Campus in St. Clairsville, Ohio, in July. He previously was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of biology at Kentucky State University. Paul and his wife, Betty, have one child.
Beth Evans Christensen 86 and her husband, Don, a physician in the Air Force, have three children: Hallie, 17; Emily, 10; and Carrie, 8. Beth is active in the girls schools as a substitute teacher and volunteer. The family currently lives in Oklahoma, but will be moving again in the summer.

Alisa Basile Lykens 86 has been promoted to gas outreach manager in the Federal Energy Regulatory Commissions energy projects office. She continues to manage the environmental review of natural gas projects across the country. The Gas Outreach Program educates the public, natural gas industry and agencies in the natural gas programs that the commission regulates. Karen Flood Orie 86 was promoted to manager of the Hampton Roads Educators Credit Union Inc. on Sept. 1. This is her third promotion at the credit union since she started working there in 1987 as marketing coordinator.
John M. Profilet 86, SIOR, vice president and partner of S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co., has been elected president of the board of directors of the Commercial Real Estate Council. CREC represents commercial Realtors throughout southeastern Virginia who specialize in selling and leasing commercial real estate. The council provides networking opportunities and serves as a business partner, disseminating news and information to all its members. John is responsible for office leasing and brokerage within the office and industrial division of S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co.
Maryellen Remich (M.S. 86), a nurse practitioner, has joined Rand Gynecology of Chesapeake.
Robert Lee Wilgus 86 and Rebecca Dawn Warlick were married May 1, 2004. Robert is employed by GlaxoSmithKline and Rebecca works at the Duke Clinical Research Institute. They live in Cary, N.C.

Michelle Shelly (Fish) Rothery Ward 87 wrote in late September that she and her husband were currently sailing around the Sea of Cortez, Mexico, on their 36-foot Lapworth wooden sloop.
Annette V. Wilson 87 has been promoted to vice president by BB&T. She joined the bank in 2000 and is based at 245 E. Little Creek Road in Norfolk. Annette and her husband, Larry, live in Chesapeake. They have one son, Larry II, 12.
Amy Zukerman Brooke 88 works part time at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital as a cardiac nurse educator. She lives in the Ghent section of Norfolk with her husband, Jeff, a law partner with Huff Poole & Mahoney, and their children, Hannah, 11, and twins Michael and Isaac, 7. Amy writes that she is legally blind, due to macular degeneration, but that she is highly functioning.
Pamela Owens Harrington 88 continues to work at Rappahannock General Hospital in Kilmarnock, Va., where she has transferred from the emergency department to nursing supervision. Last year she completed a class at Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center and received a certificate for parish nursing. Pamela volunteers at her church to promote wellness and provide education. She and her husband, Patrick, live in Mathews County, Va. They have two sons: Clay, 13, and Will, 7.

Melinda L. Cartwright Davis 89 celebrated her 10-year anniversary with Goodman & Co., a regional CPA firm with offices throughout Virginia and in Rockville, Md., in August. She was promoted the previous month to senior manager. Melinda and her husband, Jon, and daughters Sara, 12, and Rebecca, 8, continue to live in Virginia Beach, where they have been active with the local PTA and in their church. Melinda is also an active supporter of the southeastern Virginia chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners, from which she received the Friend of NAWBO award for 2003-04.
Connie Hunsucker Long 89 writes, I am back in Virginia after spending 15 years trailing around behind my academic physician husband. I challenged myself with each move by trying different areas/types of nursing, finally settling into pediatric research. She is now a stay-at-home mom with her daughter, Madeline, 4.
Donna Lorge 89 says her family will relocate (again) to Hampton Roads in 2005. She has five children and last fall took an RN refresher course in preparation for returning to work part time when her youngest starts school.
Dawn Thomasson Serafine 89 has joined Troutman Sanders LLP as an associate in the complex litigation practice group. She works in the Virginia Beach office of the international law firm.
1990s
Sonya L. Ford Becton 90 was named the 2004 Maryland Elementary School Counselor of the Year. She holds a masters in school counseling from Johns Hopkins University and two certificates of advanced graduate study (clinical community counseling and teaching in higher education) from JHU. She is a national certified counselor, a national certified school counselor and a licensed clinical professional counselor. Sonya is currently pursuing an Ed.D. in counseling psychology. She can be heard in the Washington, D.C., area on WHUR-FM every Sunday from 2-7 p.m. hosting DC Sunday, a mix of jazz and adult contemporary R&B. The show is also online at www.whur.com.

Louise Hileman (M.S. 91) is director of the nursing practice and education department at Childrens Hospital of The Kings Daughters in Norfolk, where she has worked 27 years. She serves on the community advisory board for the ODU nursing program.
Wayne Lesperance 91 (M.A. 96) and Stephanie Soule were married Oct. 16, 2004, in Henniker, N.H. Wayne is an associate professor of political science at New England College and Stephanie is the associate director of Campus Compact for New Hampshire. Wayne recently received the Professor of the Year award and was promoted from assistant to associate professor.

Carroll N. Harris III 92 has accepted an appointment as a special agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration. He attended the DEA Academy in Quantico, Va., from Sept. 25 through Jan. 20.

Deborah A. Burke 93, PE, joined the Virginia Beach office of Burgess & Niple last year as a project manager. She is responsible for managing design-build projects in the mid-Atlantic region in the federal market. Burgess & Niple is a full-service engineering firm with 15 offices in seven states.
R. David Curfman (M.E. 93) was appointed to a new position recently with Naval Facilities Engineering Command Atlantic, Norfolk, moving from director of the engineering innovation and criteria office to the environmental office.
Jesse Hancock 93 (M.S.Ed. 03) has moved to Jacksonville, Fla., where he teaches 12th-grade English, newspaper and yearbook.
Eric P. Hooker 93 is an associate toxicologist at a laboratory in Northern Virginia. He received his M.S. from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2000. Eric, who lives in Rockville, Md., bicycled more than 4,000 miles in 2004. toxicfox@yahoo.com

Capt. Susan L. Martin-Sanders (M.S.Ed. 95), U.S. Navy, recently retired after 27 years of service while assigned to Chief of Naval Personnel Support, Officer Plans and Policy Branch, Washington, D.C. She served in various billets during her career, including training program manager at the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Washington. She also received several awards, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.

Cindy A. Teller 97 joined the staff of Physicians For Peace last summer as coordinator of international medical programs and director for the Womens Health Initiative. Physicians For Peace is a not-for-profit, medical education and service organization headquartered in Norfolk. Previously, she was the operations coordinator for the pediatric forensic nurse examiner program in the emergency department at Childrens Hospital of The Kings Daughters. She is currently an on-call forensic nurse at both CHKD and Sentara Leigh Hospital.
Lt. Robert Vadnais 97 wrote in August that he is serving as a human resource officer in the U.S. Navy after an in-flight injury. He formerly flew the EA-6B Prowler. He and his wife, Capt. Linda Vadnais, have two children, Bobby and Kiara. Robert most recently was stationed near Seattle but said he would be moving to Dallas sometime in 2005.
Emmanuel Aigbokhan (Ph.D. 98) returned last year to his home country, Nigeria, to teach after several years in the United States. He was a postdoctoral researcher at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, in 2000, and held several adjunct teaching assignments at colleges and schools in the Dayton area. In July he joined the University of Benin in Benin City, Nigeria, as a senior lecturer in the botany department, where he teaches courses in plant biology and biotechnology with an emphasis on the ecology of parasitic vascular plants.

Maricel M. Eusebio 00 and Jay Chincuanco 97 are engaged to be married Aug. 20, 2005, in Virginia Beach. Maricel earned an M.S. in biotechnology in May from the Johns Hopkins University School of Arts and Sciences. She is employed by Shire Laboratories Inc. in Rockville, Md., as a senior research chemist. Jay works at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., as a PET technologist and also does contract work for the VA Hospital in Washington, D.C. The couple recently purchased a home in Fairfax, Va.

Whitney B. Hill 00 has joined the staff at MVA Scientific Consultants, an Atlanta-based company that specializes in the field of microscopy the application of the microscope to study objects too small to see with the unaided eye. MVA Scientific provides critical analysis and support for a variety of industries, and for legal and research interests worldwide through the use of electron and light microscopy. Previously with AmeriSci (formerly Scientific Laboratories), Whitney is a research scientist and is responsible for preparing and analyzing samples using Transmission Electron Microscopy. She received her masters degree in geology last year from Georgia State University.

John, who spent 30 years running and repairing nuclear submarines and testing missiles for the U.S. Navy, is now bringing his real-life experiences, along with military-style discipline, to the classroom.
