Faculty experts provide media commentary during sniper trials

Three faculty members from the sociology and criminal justice department were in demand by local, regional and national media during the sniper trials of John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo, held late last year in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, respectively.

Providing the commentary were department chair Lucien Lombardo, a nationally known expert on criminal justice issues; longtime faculty member Don Smith, an expert on juries, jury behavior and courtroom processes; and legal expert James Oleson, a recent addition to the faculty, who has studied criminal profiling.

Combined, they made more than 50 television appearances on news programs in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., as well as many live and recorded radio appearances in the D.C. area.

The professors were also quoted in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, New York Newsday, Seattle Times and Washington Times, as well as in stories distributed by the Associated Press and other news services. In addition, the CNN and ABC News Web sites carried stories quoting Lombardo and Smith.
