All in the Family: The Marshalls

When the Marshall clan of Virginia Beach gets together, as they did in December for a Monarch basketball game, chances are good that someone will share a memory of their student days at Old Dominion. In fact, of the 14 family members pictured here, 13 are ODU alumni. Plus, there are four other graduates of the larger Marshall family who didn’t make it to the game.

Matt J. Marshall Jr. ’86 (back row, middle), who is the brother of Beth Marshall DeRidder ’83 (front row, third from left), choreographed the photo opportunity. Both of their parents, Matt J. Marshall Sr. ’59 (back row, far right), a member of the baseball team who held the career batting average record for more than 30 years, and his mother, Susan Hodges Marshall ’61 (front row, third from right), a cheerleader, attended Old Dominion when it was known as the Norfolk Division. Matt Jr.’s uncle, Vince “Punchy” Marshall (back row, third from right) also is an alum, having received his M.S.Ed. degree in 1972.

Punchy and his wife, Juanita Gale Marshall (not pictured), from the class of 1950, had five daughters, four of whom are ODU alums: Nancy Marshall Rhodes ’76 (front row, far left), Terri Marshall Hopper ’84 (front row, second from left), Claudia Marshall Blake ’77 (front row, middle) and Pam Marshall Gurnee ’79 (front row, far right). Also pictured are Nancy’s husband, Ron Rhodes ’73 (back row, far left), Terri’s husband, David Hopper ’84 (back row, second from left) and Claudia’s husband, Nate Blake (back row, third from left), who attended ODU from 1973-75 and played on the baseball team.

If you’ve been able to keep up to this point, you know that that leaves one person not yet identified. That would be Ruth Hodges (front row, second from right). While she’s not an Old Dominion alumna, for many years she was connected to the school through her husband, the late Edward T. Hodges, who taught math at the Norfolk Division from 1946 to 1961 and served as department chair.

And now, for the other three family members not pictured: Edward T. Hodges Jr. ’67 and Robert Hodges ’81, brothers of Susan Hodges Marshall, and Billy Barr ’91, a brother-in-law of Matt Jr.

“Mostly, we all grew up around here and chose to attend school locally,” Matt Jr. said of the many family members and in-laws who came to Old Dominion. “It was a great way for me to get an engineering degree while working part time.” Matt is the vice president of Speight, Marshall and Francis, a structural engineering firm in Virginia Beach.
