Dwight H. Newell
Dwight H. Newell of Roseville, Calif., professor emeritus of educational leadership and services, died May 22, 2002.
Newell had worked in education more than 40 years when he retired as the Constance and Colgate Darden Professor of Education in 1984.
A World War II veteran, Newell came to the university in 1972. He served as dean of the Darden School of Education from 1972-78.
His teaching areas included public school law, organization and administration of public school programs, theory of educational leadership, and law and higher education.
Survivors include his second wife, Dorothy; his sister, Marian Paper; and his daughters, Mary Anne Stergion, Margaret McCleary and Elizabeth Sulzmann.
Patrick K. Tow
Patrick K. Tow, 51, associate professor and chair of the Department of Exercise Science, Sport, Physical Education and Recreation, died Aug. 17, 2002. He had worked at ODU 26 years, teaching community health science as his primary academic discipline.
Tow published frequently and served as editor of professional journals. He brought substantial grants to the university, where he conducted his pivotal research in community health.
He also taught martial arts courses in Judo and Jujitsu at ODU and received the renowned title of Kyoshi (master instructor), Shichidan. He served as keynote speaker in numerous U.S.-Japan educational symposiums. Tow also served his country in the Army Reserve.
Survivors include his wife, Pearl Tow; daughter, Jessica; father, Wing; a brother, Joseph; and sister, Edith.
John R. Tabb
John R. Tabb, 77, the first dean of the College of Business and Public Administration, died at his Larchmont home in Norfolk Aug. 29, 2002.
An Army veteran of World War II, Tabb fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Infantrymans Badge.
He came to ODU in 1955 as an associate professor of economics and retired in 1993.
Tabb was appointed chair of the economics department in 1956, received tenure as a full professor the next year, and was named the dean of the School of Business in 1958. From 1966 to 1974, he served as director of institutional studies, planning and development. Following this, he returned to teaching economics. Upon his retirement, he was named professor emeritus and dean emeritus.
Tabb is survived by his wife, Waulda (Buzz); four children, Jon Robert Tabb of Hopewell, Va.; James Robert Tabb of Chesapeake; Jeffrey Mark Tabb of Norfolk; and Tara Jo Tabb Hayden of Norfolk; and his sister, Jean Miriam Wilson, of Ridgecrest, Calif.
