1940s
Irvine B. Hill ’49 of Norfolk, retired vice president of public affairs and community programming at Cox Communications, was appointed president of the Old Dominion University Economics Club of Hampton Roads for 2002-03. He also was appointed a national director emeritus of the Navy League of the United States.

1960s
Col. John E. Poast II ’65, Ph.D., is on his third career, as a ski instructor and coordinator of the Brian Head Winter Sports School in Utah. This follows 26 years in the Air Force and 10 years as a professor of business and political science at Hawaii Pacific University.

Mary L. Branham ’67 (M.S.Ed. ’72) lists her address as 119 Stafford Drive, Palm Harbor, Fla. 34684.

Sonja Pritchard ’68 (M.S.Ed. ’79) is one of 12 U.S. teachers who will receive a Great Books Foundation “Great Books, Great Teacher Award” in May from the Chicago-based foundation. She is a reading teacher at Norfolk’s Lake Taylor Middle School.

1970s

T.A. Grell Jr. ’71 was elected second vice president of the Virginia Association of Community Banks. He is president of Resource Bank, headquartered in Virginia Beach.

Morgan Davis ’72, president of Towne Bank, served on the leadership team of the 2002 Virginia Beach Neptune Festival.

Greg Franceski (M.B.A. ’72) has been approved by the Association of Professionals in Business Management for the designation of Certified Business Manager. APBM is a leading global educational service organization and sponsors the CBM designation. Its mission is to help business specialists become business generalists to succeed in the global economy. Greg is a financial management consultant in Virginia Beach.

Michael R. (Ron) ’72 and Ginny Lynn Oliver Sorrell ’71 (M.S.Ed. ’74) have worked the last 25 years for Fairfax County (Va.) Public Schools. Ron has been a special educator at West Springfield High School all that time, and Ginny has taught in several elementary and middle schools. She currently is a seventh grade history teacher at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax. Ginny has devoted much of her career to reading and learning styles, as well as the teaching of reading in content areas. For over a decade she operated her own consulting firm, Sound Reading Associates. Ron received a Ph.D. in the history of education from the University of Virginia in 2002. His dissertation is titled “Extending Public Higher Education into Northern Virginia: The Formative Years of George Mason University, 1949-1972.” He hopes it will lead to a published history of GMU. Ginny and Ron plan to retire in 2004. Their son, Michael Jr., is a senior at Centerville High School.

Carl E. Cholewa Jr. ’73 has been appointed chief financial officer of Clark Nexsen, an architectural, engineering and interior design firm in Norfolk. He celebrated his 19th anniversary with the firm in 2002.

Jerome F. Clark ’73 has been appointed president and commercial division manager of SunTrust Bank’s Newport News/Hampton market. Previously, he was senior vice president in the commercial division. He was elected last year as an officer of the Virginia Living Museum’s board of trustees.

Robert J. O’Neill Jr. ’73 was recently named director of the International City/County Management Association. He previously served as president of the National Academy of Public Administration.

Donald C. Rees ’73 retired in July 2002 after 27 years of wildland fire suppression work with the U.S. Forest Service. Nine of those years were as a smokejumper and 15 as the assistant and superintendent of a Forest Service “hotshot” crew. Don lives in Whitefish, Mont., and is currently a member of a National Type 1 Incident Management Team. He also teaches wildland fire suppression classes at Flathead Valley Community College and gives private banjo and guitar lessons.

Stephen L. Underhill ’73 was appointed last year as senior vice president of Shaw Paint and Wallpaper Co. Inc. with offices in Hampton and Norfolk.

Eleanor A. Lewis ’74 was elected last year to a three-year term as a trustee of the Hermitage Foundation in Norfolk.

William E. Twomey Jr. ’74 has joined the Norfolk law office of McGuireWoods LLP as a partner. He transferred from the firm’s Richmond office in the labor and employment department.

Sean Brickell ’75, APR, was named last year to the College of Fellows by the Public Relations Society of America. The president of Brickell & Partners in Virginia Beach, Sean is immediate past chair of the Worldcom Public Relations Group’s Americas Region and served on the global board for the world’s largest network of independent agencies. He is the co-founder and current president of Virginia Legends Walk, a nonprofit corporation that honors great Virginians who have made significant contributions to the nation and the world.

Mark Elder ’75 recently rejoined the mechanical engineering team at Clark Nexsen, an architectural, engineering and interior design firm in Norfolk. He is a professional engineer with over 25 years’ experience. For the last 10 years he has been an adjunct faculty member at ODU, teaching classes in HVAC design and applied psychrometrics.

Anne Bartron Kornegay ’75 (M.S. ’77) (formerly Hutcherson), of Roanoke, was named by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association as one of six recipients of the 2002 Pfizer/ADHA Excellence in Dental Hygiene Award. The program recognizes dental hygienists for outstanding accomplishments that impact the practice and future of the profession. The award included $2,500. Anne has been with Virginia Western Community College since 1985, where she is an associate professor of dental hygiene and program director.

Peter F. Herrick ’76, along with James M. Stafford and James G. Hurley Jr., have formed Stafford, Herrick and Hurley PC with law offices in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Norfolk. Previously, he and Stafford were partners in Stafford and Herrick in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake.

Doug Rawlins ’76 was named 2002 Norfolk Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors Underwriter of the Year. The group’s 2001-02 president, he has been in the life insurance industry more than 23 years and works for Allstate Insurance Co.

R. Bruce Bradley (M.B.A. ’78), president of Landmark Publishing Group, was re-elected to a three-year term on the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association’s board of directors.

J. Jerry Canada ’78 became CEO of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance Companies in October. A 24-year veteran of IFBIC, he had served as executive vice president and general manager since 1999. Jerry and his wife, Mary Martin, have two children.

George R. Koscho ’78 (M.P.A. ’86), a systems analyst for Chesapeake, was elected 2003 president of the Association of Information Technology Professionals.

Paul T. Peele ’78 was named association executive of the Norfolk Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors for 2002-03.

Dr. Anthony Savage ’78, a Virginia Beach orthodontist, was elected last summer to serve as a director of the Virginia Association of Orthodontists, a nonprofit organization.

Diana L. Wodder-Silverstein ’78 writes that she left her beloved Virginia to move back home to New Jersey to get married. She and Adam Silverstein were married Nov. 19, 2000. Diana works for Schering-Plough Healthcare Products in Berkeley Heights, N.J., with the business development group and “loves it.” She adds, “Adam is a builder and built me a beautiful house out in the country.” They live at 5 Krueger Hill Road, Pittstown, N.J. 08867. 908-735-9471

Garry G. Kiskinis ’79 has been promoted to vice president with Clark Nexsen, an architectural, engineering and interior design firm in Norfolk. He previously was director of electrical engineering and celebrated his 23-year anniversary with the firm last year.

1980s
Linda L. Forehand ’80 has joined The Nature Conservancy of Virginia in the Virginia Beach office as associate director of philanthropy for the Hampton Roads region. She will concentrate on major gifts and planned giving for the conservancy’s $52 million “Wild Virginia” capital campaign. Previously, she was development director for the Virginia Symphony.

Deborah Stearns ’80 of Advantis Real Estate Services Co. was named president of the Downtown Norfolk Council board of directors last year.

Frank “Skip” Dirren (M.A. ’81) was promoted last year to vice president and general manager of Battelle’s Navy market sector. He leads teams that have a decades-long history of helping solve the Navy’s diverse and challenging technology needs. Skip previously was a senior program manager for Battelle’s Navy sector. Prior to that, he served as commander of the Naval Safety Center, with 37 years of service. He lives in Norfolk.

Ted Hand ’81, director of engineering for WTKR-TV in Norfolk, was elected last fall to a two-year term on the Society of Broadcast Engineers national board of directors.

Julius S. Miller ’81, M.D., F.A.C.P., is president of the medical staff of Chesapeake General Hospital. He practices with Chesapeake Internists Ltd., a nine-member group of specialists.

Donnie C. Shelton ’81 recently became a senior project scheduler for an engineering and construction firm specializing in offshore oil and gas exploration, processing and transportation facilities. Previously, he worked as an independent contractor to numerous engineering firms on other projects in the industry. His daughter, Erika, is a freshman at Stephen F. Austin State University and he is raising his 12-year-old son, Nick. They live near Houston. Donnie writes, “I would like to hear from anyone from 1979-81 who might remember me. Barbara Domurat? Lindsay J. Smith ’81 writes that he’s still in fire protection engineering and that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in August 1998. He and his wife, Marcia, have three children: “Junior varsity fullback Chris, 16; ‘Mr. Free Throw’ Jared, 13; and Jared’s twin sister, Mariel, who is gearing up for the mile in track. The boys are shooting for the Air Force Academy and Mariel wants to go to the University of Florida for veterinary science.” The family lives at 2754 Prince John Road, Winter Park, Florida 32792.

Debra E. Williams ’81 (M.S.Ed. ’84) of Norfolk was awarded a doctor of audiology degree last year from Pennsylvania College of Optometry and received the Dean’s Award for Comprehensive Excellence in Audiology.

Cmdr. Glen C. Ackermann ’82, U.S. Navy, visited Crete, Greece, and Naples, Italy, last year while assigned to Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 125, embarked aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, home ported in Norfolk.

Jean Acey Draper ’82 and her family transferred to the Richmond area four years ago. She teaches at Atlee High School, where Glen Gardner ’78 is an administrator. This is Jean’s 14th year teaching marketing and serving as a DECA adviser. She was recently named chair of the career and technical education department. Jean has served on various curriculum writing teams for the Department of Education for Marketing. D. Arthur Kelsey ’82 was appointed last year by Gov. Warner to the Court of Appeals of Virginia to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Richard S. Bray of Chesapeake. Since 2000, Arthur had served as a circuit judge for the Fifth Judicial Circuit of Virginia, which includes the cities of Suffolk and Franklin and the counties of Southampton and Isle of Wight.

Rick Spore ’82 has worked in business management for the past 20 years. He is now a senior business broker for Sunbelt Business Brokers - Outer Banks, and a North Carolina real estate broker. Chris Mowbray ’83 lives in Bradenton, Fla., and works as a senior engineer for Manatee County. He wrote in November that he was married last year “to a wonderful woman I met in a conversational Spanish class at a local community college. Maria Justice Moore (M.P.A. ’84) wrote in October that she recently received an M.A. in history, with a concentration in precolonial Africa, from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. She is a charter member of the ODU chapter of the Public Administration Honor Society. She writes, “I recently talked with Maxine Lippman (M.P.A. ’00), who is now with the Henry Jackson Military Medicine Foundation.”

Marquis Erroll Sailor ’84 was recently nominated for the Federal Employee Association Outstanding Supervisor Award at his command, the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center in North Charleson, S.C. Marquis is responsible for the program management necessary to ensure that shipboard internal communications are properly engineered, installed and supported on U.S. Navy ships. His nomination was based on his professional success, leadership and supervisory skills, and his extensive volunteerism in the community, especially relating to schoolchildren. Matthew Labarge ’86, a pianist/composer, performed original music for solo piano Dec. 7 at the Chrysler Museum Theatre in Norfolk. Mary Murphy Amici ’87 and her husband, Joe, announce the birth of their second child, Maximillian James, on Nov. 6, 2001. Max joins a brother, Caesar, age 5. Mary is a project manager supporting outsourced servicing projects and products for American Express, with whom she has worked the past nine years. She will continue her employment with Amex via virtual office when the family moves in May 2003 from Greensboro, N.C., to Virginia Beach. Joe has accepted a promotion as store manager at Dillard’s in Norfolk’s MacArthur Center.

Kathryn E. Dawson (M.S. ’87) is a staff writer and communications coordinator for a national trade association in Columbus, Ohio. She also writes on a freelance basis and has had stories published in two recent books, “The Walker Within” and “A Cup of Comfort for Friends.” Her daughter Jessica graduated from Brigham Young University in December 2001 and her son Michael was a missionary for two years (1999-2001) in Paraguay. kdawson215@hotmail.com

James Crouch ’89 (M.S.Ed. ’02) retired from the Navy in 2000 and returned to graduate school. He completed his master’s program through ODU’s Everett, Wash., TELETECHNET site. James wrote in August that he was starting a job as a high school social studies teacher and “looking forward to the personal rewards found in teaching and enjoying the financial benefits of starting a second career.” He lives at 2422 Happy Valley Road, Oak Harbor, Wash. 98277.

Lisa Schultz-Prudenti ’89 is still a police officer in Suffolk County, Long Island. Eliot Khalil Wilson ’89 (M.A. ’91) was one of two winners in last year’s Cleveland State University Poetry Center contest, chosen from among 885 poets who submitted 921 manuscripts. Eliot, who won the First Book Competition for “The Saint of Letting Small Fish Go,” received $1,000 and publication in the CSU Poetry Series. Kip A. Harbison ’90 was elected last year as a partner of of Glasser and Glasser PLC in Norfolk.

John B. Schamel III ’90 retired from the Marine Corps, Marine Corps Systems Command, Quantico, Va., last August after 21 years on active duty. He now works as a defense contractor for Eagan, McAllister and Associates Inc. in Dumfries, Va. Ed Singer ’90, P.E., recently became a stockholder with TIMMONS of Richmond, where he is a senior project manager and assistant manager of the firm’s Geographic Information Systems business unit. Liz Dickenson Swartley (M.A. ’92) has been named director of public relations for the d’ART Center, a regional nonprofit visual arts facility in Norfolk.

Thomas DeMartini ’93, a master police officer with the Virginia Beach Police Department, was credited with rescuing two swimmers at the Oceanfront Sept. 1. In the process of keeping the two afloat in the rough surf while awaiting additional help, he suffered severe leg cramps himself, having only hours earlier run in the Rock & Roll Half Marathon, according to a story in The Virginian-Pilot. “Without Officer DeMartini’s heroic efforts, both swimmers could have drowned,” police spokesman Don Rimer said in the story.

Pete Lefresne ’93 was appointed to serve as the University of Maine’s assistant athletic director for media relations on an interim basis for 2002-03. He has been at UM since 1999. Pete and his wife, Sheila, have two children: Fiona, 5, and Brandon, 3.

Kristin McHale Marple ’93 and her husband, Nathan, announce the birth of a son, Nathan Thomas, on July 30, 2002. Kristin teaches second grade in New Jersey but has been taking time off to raise their son.

Henry M. Rogers III (M.B.A. ’93) joined the Professional Association of HealthCare Reimbursement Specialists in Virginia Beach as chief operating officer last year.

W. Wayne Jr. ’93 and Teresa B. Vick ’96 announce the birth of their second daughter, Meredith Austin, on March 28, 2002. She joins Madison, age 2 H. The family continues to live and work in Williamsburg.

Wendy Williams ’93 has accepted a new position with Engineering Consulting Services Ltd., a geotechnical and environmental firm, as director of business development in the Richmond office. She has also been busy the last three years as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) with a volunteer organization that helps abused and neglected children in Henrico County.

J. Richard Braun ’94, principal of The Financial Center Inc. in Virginia Beach, earned the 2002 Champion Award, one of Nationwide Insurance’s highest multiline production honors. The award is presented to agents who have attained excellence in sales of automobile, homeowners and other property and casualty insurance products, as well as life insurance and other financial services products. In recognition of his achievement, Richard and his family were invited to Nationwide’s 2002 Conference of Champions in Cancun, Mexico.

Thomas Ferguson ’94 joined the Chicago office of Kelley Drye & Warren in July 2002. His legal practice areas of concentration are venture capital and mergers and acquisitions. Thom and his wife, Christina, announce the birth of a son, Tyler Edward, on July 21, 2002.

Jonathan Freeland ’94 of Cox Communications was elected last year as co-vice president/programs for the Ad Club of Hampton Roads.

Deanna D. Vander Plas ’94 and Steven G. Benish were married Aug. 31, 2002. A former member of the women’s basketball team, Deanna is a family physician with Reedsburg Physicians Group in Reedsburg, Wis. After college, she attended the Medical College of Wisconsin (M.D. ’98) and did her family practice residency in Waukesha, Wis.

Kelly Wanamaker ’94, ’97 plans to attend medical school this year. She has worked as an RN for more than five years at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in the cardiac surgery ICU. “After the disappointment [in 2001] of not getting an acceptance letter, I chose not to give up and tried again. In four years, I will be a doctor!” Kelly adds that she is sorry she couldn’t attend the cheerleaders reunion.

Jason Carter ’95 earned his law degree in 1999 from George Mason University and served one year as judicial law clerk for Stanley P. Klein in the Fairfax County, Va., Circuit Court. He received an M.B.A. last year from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, where he was M.B.A. class president. Since May, Jason has worked in corporate business development at Eli Lilly and Co., a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company, in Indianapolis.

Morri-Lyn Jones Davis ’95 lives in Suffolk with her husband, Kevin, a captain in the Marines. They have two sons, Ryan and Kevin Jr., and a daughter, Mykaylyn. They moved back to Hampton Roads from Camp Lejeune, N.C., where Morri-Lyn received a master’s in health services management from Webster University in 1999. Jay Familant (M.S.Ed. ’95) received his Ph.D. in March 2002 at Ohio University. He is employed by Boston University as a residence manager for the school’s Washington Programs in Washington, D.C.

Jason Harris ’95 and Catherine Trombly ’95 were married Oct. 19, 2002, in Las Vegas. They are both CPAs and live in Virginia Beach. Jason is the financial controller for Kappa Graphic Board USA in Chesapeake and Cathy is a tax manager for the public accounting firm Wall, Einhorn and Chernitzer in Norfolk.

Keith Rawls ’96 wrote last July that he was deployed to the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. As an independent duty Navy corpsman, Keith practiced medicine without the direct supervision of a doctor and “met some very interesting locals and important dignitaries while I was there, like Secretary of State Colin Powell.” Keith is stationed at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, N.C.

Sally P. Magee ’97 earned her master’s in civil and environmental engineering, with an emphasis on water resources, from the University of Maryland in spring 2001. She passed the Professional Engineer exam in October that year. Sally currently serves in the Peace Corps in Honduras (2002-04), helping out in the area of water/sanitation. Her projects include designing and implementing systems that will bring fresh water to residents.

Dave Pattie ’97 placed second at last summer’s U.S. Rowing Masters National Championships in the Men’s Single Sculls A category (27-35 age bracket). Dave, who rows under the affiliation of the ODU Crew Alumni, covered the final 1,000-meter race in 3:39.17.

Lt. j.g. Darren E. Hinds ’98 took part in a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf last year in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was assigned to the guided missile cruiser USS Hue City, home ported in Mayport, Fla.

Foster Billingsley ’99 works for the commonwealth of Virginia as deputy director for the Virginia Commission for the Arts. He previously was company manager/production coordinator for the Virginia Opera Association. Foster was married on Labor Day to a VCU graduate student.

Safouane El Mansour ’99 worked for one year with Startec Global Telecommunications in Washington, D.C., after graduating, and then returned to Morocco where he started an e-business, Ketabook.com, the first online Maghreb bookstore. He also joined Méditelecom, a mobile phone operator, as an analyst in sales administration, planning and forecasting. He is now head of the sales administration unit. Last May, Safouane was awarded a full-tuition Fulbright scholarship in partnership with the Morocco American Commission for Educational and Cultural Exchange and will pursue an M.B.A. starting this fall.

Lt. Cmdr. Stephen D. Gaston (M.E.M. ’99), U.S. Navy Reserves, was promoted to his current rank last year while serving with Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan.

Susan T. Lee (M.S. ’99) has obtained certification as a Professional Wetland Scientist in the commonwealth of Virginia. An environmental scientist in Burgess & Niple’s Dulles District office in Chantilly, Va., Susan is skilled in wetland delineation; local, state and federal environmental permitting; endangered and threatened species surveys; and National Environmental Policy Act documentation. She joined Burgess & Niple in 2001. Her interests outside the office include hiking, camping and playing the violin.
