Jacques S. Zaneveld
Jacques S. Zaneveld, professor emeritus of oceanography and founder of the Institute of Oceanography, the predecessor of Old Dominion's oceanography program, died Sept. 15, 2001, at his home in The Hague, Netherlands. He was 91.
A native of the Netherlands, Zaneveld joined Old Dominion in 1959 as professor of biology and department chair. He served as the first director of the Institute of Oceanography from 1965 until 1968, when he was named the university's first Samuel L. and Fay M. Slover Professor of Oceanography. He held that title until his retirement in 1975.
His research included three expeditions to Antarctica. Perhaps his best-known projects were his long-range ecological study of the waters of the lower Chesapeake Bay (he spearheaded the building of artificial reefs in the area) and his study of Eastern Shore marine algae, both funded by the National Science Foundation. Zaneveld was knighted by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in 1997 in recognition of his distinguished career.
He returned to campus in 1998 to attend the dedication ceremony for the Zaneveld Conference Room in the Oceanography and Physics Building.
He is survived by two sons, J. Ronald, a professor of oceanography at Oregon State University, and Lourens '63, a professor of biochemistry at the Medical College of Illinois in Chicago.
Memorial donations may be made to the Zaneveld Fund in the Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, in care of the Educational Foundation, 129 Koch Hall, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Va. 23529.

Friends
George M. Kaufman
George Mansbach Kaufman, a prominent Norfolk businessman and philanthropist whose name was familiar to many among the campus community, died Nov. 1, 2001. He was 69.
Although not a graduate of Old Dominion, he was a friend of the university and a well-known benefactor. He and his wife, Linda Hofheimer Kaufman, personally led the major drive to beautify the campus, which resulted in Kaufman Mall. They also established an endowment for the Kaufman Lecturer in Public Affairs, which has been held by Bill Whitehurst since its inception, and another gift of theirs established the Elise Hofheimer Arts Library.
Linda Kaufman served on Old Dominion's Board of Visitors from 1970-78, and both she and her husband were recipients of the University Medal. Kaufman Hall, Old Dominion's engineering building, is named for Kaufman's father, the late Charles L. Kaufman.
Kaufman's professional career began in Norfolk in investment banking. The founder and partner of Kaufman Bros., he developed numerous apartment communities throughout Virginia and the Carolinas. He was a former director of Landmark Communications.
Kaufman is survived by his wife; son, Edward George Kaufman; daughter, Claire Kaufman Benjack; sister, Barbara K. Rosenwald, and brother, Charles L. Kaufman.
