George W. Cox '69 is principal of the Cox Law Firm in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He concluded his term as national president of the North American Interfraternity Foundation in December, chairing its annual meeting in Washington, D.C. He is serving as NIF board chair for 2002. George also chairs the board of the Youth Diamond Fund, a charitable foundation affiliated with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (the Carolina League affiliate of the Atlanta Braves) that raises funds for the construction or repair of baseball and softball fields for area youth. Robert Skinner '70 married Bettye Jean Verlenden, also of New Orleans, in June 2001. His fifth novel, "Pale Shadow," was released in the fall, and he contributed a chapter, "Andre Dubus: A Critical Bibliography," to the book "Andre Dubus: Tributes," edited by Donald Anderson.

Bob Callahan '73 was selected in December as the Virginia "Wheaties Everyday Champion" in connection with the nationwide unveiling of a new cereal, Wheaties Energy Crunch. Fifty individuals were honored based on their demonstration of a balanced life, athletic accomplishments and community service. Bob, who lives in Virginia Beach, is president of Adventure Alternatives, an outdoor adventure company that provides adventure-based counseling to youths on court probation and parole, as well as Eco-Adventure Tours and corporate training adventures, which can include everything from hiking to sea kayaking. Bob, who recently finished his first ironman triathlon, has completed more than 75 marathons and triathlons. He has been a volunteer emergency medical technician since 1980.
David Miranda '74 is the CEO and founder of LastMinuteTravel.com, a global marketplace for Last Minute TravelŪ offers. Last June, the company announced a multiyear agreement with America Online Inc. under which LastMinuteTravel.com's selection of just-released travel offers are made available across the Travel Channels of America Online brands. The service was launched in September. The Last Minute TravelŪ network includes LastMinute Travel.comTM, and Last Minute Travel on America Online, on AOL.com, on Netscape, on CompuServe and on Yahoo! Travel.
Claire Shaeffer '74 designs the Custom Couture Pattern Collection for Vogue Patterns. The patterns, which feature classic designs, include instructions for French couture construction.
Gary W. Waters '74 has been elected to his sixth four-year term as sheriff for the city of Portsmouth.
Juliana Maziarka '75 received her K-6 teaching certification from Gardner Webb College while working for Duke Power. She has been working at Sunny View School for 11 years in kindergarten and grades 1-2. In that time she earned her master's in elementary education from Converse College and recently became a National Board-certified teacher. Her 21-year-old son, Mathew, and his wife have a 3-year-old son, Alex.
Cathy Roberts '75 (M.S. '92), a science teacher at William E. Waters Middle School in Portsmouth, was named a recipient of the Disney American Teacher Awards. Thirty-five honorees were chosen, and awards totaling $515,000 were given to the teachers, their schools and districts.
John W. Iuliano III '76 was installed in October as secretary of Tidewater Builders Association for 2002. John, the president of Area Builders of Tidewater Inc., has been building custom homes since 1987. He enjoys fishing and snow skiing with his four children.
Dean A. Martinelli '76 (M.S. '79), a partner with Business Valuations, was one of five partners elected by professional peers in a survey of Virginia CPAs to be among the 77 CPAs recognized in Virginia Business magazine's list of "Super CPAs."
Bill Parks '76 continues to work for the Maryland Department of Trans-portation, where he is helping design a proposed high-speed magnetic levitation train system that will operate between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. "I enjoyed my visit to the campus this fall to meet with Bob Fenning [vice president for administration and finance] and see the construction of the new ODU maglev. The campus and maglev system look great! I am anxious to return and see the maglev system in operation."

Midge Wilson (M.S. '76), a professor of psychology at DePaul University, received an administrative appointment to start the fall 2001 term as director of the First Year Program. Midge is a 1997 recipient of an Old Dominion Distinguished Alumni Award.
Richard A. Owens (M.A. '77) was named last fall as president of West Liberty State College in Wheeling, W.Va. Founded in 1837, the college enrolls approximately 2,650 students. He previously had served as president and professor of history of Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, for five years.
Frank Sayles Jr. '77 is now publisher of The Tifton (Ga.) Gazette, part of Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. He also is editorial development director for 15 Georgia newspapers for CNHI. He recently conducted a workshop for the Southern Newspapers Publishers Association. Frank lives with his wife, Bonnie, and son Nick at 615 Tift Ave. N., Tifton, Ga. 31794.
Tom Scherberger '77 was promoted last fall from city editor in the Tampa bureau to state editor by the St. Petersburg Times. Tom joined the Times as a reporter in the Tampa bureau in 1992. He was an editorial writer two years in the Tampa bureau before becoming city editor in 1996.
James R. Wagner '77 was promoted in September to senior vice president of PMI Mortgage Insurance Co., headquartered in San Francisco. This position includes his previous duties of interacting with Government Sponsored Enterprises along with assuming responsibility as liaison with HUD and various trade organizations. He is located in the Washington, D.C., area to facilitate closer interaction with these entities. Jim has more than 30 years of experience in real estate development and mortgage lending. He has been with PMI since 1982.
Brian J. McNelis '78 assumed the position of senior plant manager at the Anheuser-Busch brewery in Williamsburg on Jan. 1. Brian started his career at the Williamsburg brewery 23 years ago. Most recently, he was plant manager at the Busch brewery in Baldwinsville, N.Y. The Williamsburg facility brews more than 10 brands of beer, including Budweiser and Bud Light. Brian and his wife, Lynn, have three sons.
LeeAnn Azar '79 (M.B.A. '94) joined AmeriComm Direct Marketing's corporate staff last fall as vice president of marketing. She is responsible for strategic planning, advertising, public relations and communications for the Norfolk business, one of the largest direct-marketing companies in the U.S. LeeAnn has more than 20 years' experience in marketing, sales, distribution and management.

Paul Byrum '80 has joined DataMentors Inc., a leading provider of data quality products and services, as senior vice president of sales. DataMentors is based in Tampa, Fla. Paul has more than 20 years of experience in direct marketing, database marketing and CRM.
Phillip Garber '80 became a licensed professional engineer in Virginia last year. He works as the chief gas engineer for the city of Charlottesville, Public Utilities, and lives in Keene, Va.
Anita W. Paretti '80 (M.S. '81) recently completed the Certified Public Finance Officer examination series and received the designation of CPFO. This five-year examination began in 1997; 193 individuals nationwide were awarded the distinction as part of the first graduating class. "For me, it was particularly challenging as I have been fighting a major illness over the past three years while, nonetheless, working full time in the Office of the Comptroller, city of Milwaukee," she writes. Anita is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Wisconsin Institute of CPAs, WGFOA and the Virginia Society of CPAs.
Warren D. Harris (M.P.A. '81), a former assistant director of economic development for the city of Chesa-peake, was appointed director in October. Warren had worked as director of development and external relations for the Chrysler Museum of Art since leaving his assistant's job with the city at the end of June. He worked in Old Dominion's development office before joining the city of Chesapeake in 1991.
Eric Tietjen '81 was named last fall as director of sales for Cytura, a provider of content management infrastructure software and services, located in Heathrow, Fla. Eric has more than 15 years of software sales and sales management experience.
Karyn Grimes '82 accepted a position with Unisys Corp. in July 2001 as a software engineer.
Wilson W. Hitchings '82, after graduation, worked at Texas Instruments in Dallas for 10 years as a programmer and systems analyst. Following a year of independent consulting, he moved with his wife and daughter to San Francisco, where he and his business partners started an international consulting firm, Tier Technologies (NASDAQ: Tier) in 1991. After 10 more years of travel and consulting, he moved with his wife and two children to Colorado Springs, Colo., to start a digital imaging and editing company called Best Visuals (www.bestvisuals.com). Bill Stine '82 of Norfolk reports that he had his gallbladder removed in January. He also wrote (in early February) that he was still healing from a brown recluse spider bite six months earlier.
Judith Froehlich Pitchford '84 moved to Olympia, Wash., four years ago with her husband, Jon, and children, Dane, 15, and Brynn, 8. She works for the Washington State Library at the Washington Corrections Center Branch. "It can be surreal at times but, in the end, rewarding," Judith writes.
Anne Marie Flatley (M.S.Ed. '85) of Irondequoit, N.Y., was hired last fall as a health and physical education instructor at Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y.
Fred Cornelius '86, CFA, CFP, has rejoined Burt Associates Inc. in Rockville, Md., as a vice president. He was listed by Worth Magazine as one of the top 250 financial advisers in the country. His firm was recently ranked in the top 30 of wealth managers nationwide (No. 2 in Maryland) by Bloomberg Wealth Manager Magazine. Margaret Kubilins '86 is president of Kubilins Transportation Group, an engineering firm, in Newport News. She started the company in 1993 as a one-person operation specializing in traffic engineering. Today, KTG has more than 20 employees with offices also in Charlotte and Greensboro, N.C. The firm does work in the areas of access management, traffic impact analysis, traffic signal design, signal system timing, intersection design, roadway signing plans, air quality modeling, neighborhood design and corridor studies. Margaret and her husband have three children.
Ulhas Rajurkar '86 (M.B.A. '88) was a two-time winner on the TV game show "Jeopardy" in October. He works for the Department of Defense in Northern Virginia.
Jeanann G. Ficker (M.P.A. '87) still runs her own municipal consulting business. She recently completed an EPA-funded project that culminated in the development of a software program to help cities and towns establish trash fees. She lives in Crown Point, Ind.
Patricia Rea (C.A.S. '87) received the 2001 Outstanding Researcher in Learning Disabilities Award from the Council for Learning Disabilities, an international organization. It was given in recognition of her research as a graduate student at the College of William and Mary on "Performance of Students With Learning Disabilities in Inclusive Classrooms and in Pull-Out Special Education Programs." She received a cash award and was honored at the CLD conference last October. Trish works as an educational consultant and strategist with school districts throughout the country. She writes a column for the Special Education Law Bulletin and serves on the faculties of Hampton University, William and Mary and Longwood College. She and her husband, Thomas, have two children, Ellen, 17, and Thomas, 20.
Lt. Efren R. Flores '88, U.S. Navy, graduated last year from the Basic Civil Engineer Corps Officer School in Port Hueneme, Calif.
Jennifer Boretsky Keenan '88 has been named chairman of the board of directors for the South Brunswick Islands Chamber of Commerce. She and her husband, Jim '93, live in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. They have three children: Gregory, 5, Sarah, 3, and Caroline, 1.
Lt. Cmdr. Dale C. Rielage (M.S. '88), U.S. Navy, a deputy executive assistant on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon, was among the servicemen and women who helped with the rescue efforts following the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.
Gordon Theisz '88, M.D., completed his family practice residency at Riverside Family Practice in Newport News and now works for Heritage Family Practice in Fairfax, Va. At graduation, he received the Spirit of Family Practice Award, a recognition from fellow graduates. Sarah Baker '90 became the first female publisher of The News-Enterprise in Elizabethtown, Ky., on Jan. 2. She previously served as a vice president and general manager with the Greensboro (N.C.) News & Record, where she had worked since 1994.
Alan Blanchard '90 (M.S. '92, Ph.D. '95) was among a select group chosen to attend the U.S. Air Force test pilot school at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., where he will train as a flight test engineer. Alan is an officer in the Air Force and has been a developmental engineer since September 2000 (after transferring from the Army). He is scheduled to arrive at Edwards in June for the yearlong program. "I'll be studying all aspects of flight test engineering and getting lots of time in 30 different aircraft. Then I'll be in the flight test engineering world for the next decade or so."
Sherrie Cheshire Bollhorst '90 was named Regional Health Educator of the Year and National Health Educator of the Year (2001) by the American Alliance of Health Education. Sherrie is a teacher with Newport News Public Schools and lives in Carrollton, Va., with her husband, Jason, and daughters, Caitlin and Madison.
Lt. Cmdr. Geoffrey C. Mones '90 wrote in September that he was the material and logistics officer/anti-terrorism force protection officer with COMPHIBRON Four staff embarked aboard the USS Wasp. Ruth Wise (M.S.Ed. '90) won a $130,000 grant from "Leadership for a Changing World," a program of the nonprofit Ford Foundation, for her efforts to help redevelop the small community of New Road, near Exmore, on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Ruth founded the New Road Community Development Group of Exmore Inc. in 1992 as part of her successful efforts to win federal money for a sewer system. She has since helped NRCDG procure nearly $2 million in grants to build new houses.
Linda Boltersdorf '91 recently received her national certification in early and middle childhood physical education. She is currently one of 116 teachers certified in this area. She is in the process of co-authoring and publishing her first book on teaching practices. Linda lives in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Zuleika Baker Brooks '91 and her husband, Virgil, celebrated their fourth anniversary in April 2001. They live in Woodbridge, Va.
Sid Dobrin (M.A. '91) is an associate professor of English and director of writing programs at the University of Florida. He has published six books and has another seven scheduled for release over the next two years. His publications can be found in a variety of magazines and journals, and he frequently speaks across the country about environmental issues as they pertain to language and writing. Sid is also a dive instructor and teaches scuba in his free time.
Terry E. Dodge '91 has joined Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern Inc., an architectural and engineering firm with offices in Virginia Beach, as an engineer in the electrical department.
Elizabeth Francis Giles (M.S. '91), director of clinical education and senior lecturer in physical therapy at Old Dominion, gave a presentation last fall, "Linking Clinicians to the DPT: A Transition DPT Needs Assessment Study" at the 2001 Virginia Physical Therapy Association annual conference in Williamsburg. She received the John L. Echternach Research Award for Best Research Presentation. In April 2001 she received the Barbara Jordan Community Service Award for Outstanding Leadership from Old Dominion's Hugo A. Owens African American Cultural Center.
Scott Miller '91 moved to Florida "with my love, Jill, and my African grey parrot, Willow," last August to begin the doctoral program in clinical psychology (neuropsychology specialization) at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale. Bob May '92 writes that after opening a new office five years ago and serving as regional manager for IMS Environmental Services in Raleigh, N.C., he moved to Chesapeake last spring in time for the newest member of the family, Miranda, to arrive in July. Jeff Oakley '92 is executive vice president of Oakley Tank Lines, a bulk transportation company in Prince George County, Va. It is a three-time member of the Fantastic 50, a list of Virginia's fastest-growing companies. Jeff, who took over the reins of his father's business after graduation, said his goal is to have 12 terminals by 2005 in areas east of the Mississippi River.

Laverne L. Brown '94, assistant professor of chemistry at St. Mary's College of Maryland, was awarded a Henry C. Welcome Fellowship Grant last fall by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. One of only seven state recipients, Laverne and fellow awardees will each receive $20,000 over a three-year period to support research, publications and speaking engagements. Laverne is a first-year professor of organic chemistry at SMCM. She recently completed research for the National Institute on Drug Abuse that focused on the link between nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and nicotine dependence in cigarette smokers, as well as a variety of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases.
Matt '94 and Amy Holt '98 announce the birth of a daughter, Olivia Kathryn, in September 2001. Matt continues to work in the Labor Relations Department of Norfolk Southern Corp., while Amy has taken some time off from her teaching career to spend with their new addition.

John S. Stone '94, a registered nurse and computer systems analyst with Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), was the primary author of a poster at the American Medical Informatics Association Fall Symposium in Washington, D.C. The poster, "User Communication and Problem Tracking: A Multi-faceted Approach to Rapid Application Development," was a retrospective analysis of some of the reasons VUMC has been successful with its provider order entry system, "WizOrder." This clinical application was recently licensed exclusively to McKesson Corp., a Fortune 35 company. More than 10 hospitals have committed to installing this multimillion-dollar software. John is a recognized expert in the design of clinical information systems and their installation, and consults with McKesson. Angela East Weber '96 has lived in the U.S. Virgin Islands the past five years. She and her husband, Michael, will have been married four years this June. After serving as director of a private investment banking firm, Angela joined V.I. Rum Industries Ltd. as staff accountant. "V.I. Rum crafts the world-famous Cruzan Rum," she writes. 1st Lt. Roger Mahar '99, U.S. Marine Corps, is stationed at MCAS Beaufort, S.C., where he is a maintenance material control officer for VMFA-122, an F/A-18C jet fighter squadron. He is working on a master's in human resource management from Troy State University in Alabama.

George Berko (M.S.Ed. '00) retired from active duty last year as a master chief petty officer after 28 years with the U.S. Navy. He most recently served at Trident Training Facility in Silverdale, Wash.
