Five inducted into Sports Hall of Fame
Five alumni were inducted into the Old Dominion University Sports Hall of Fame this spring. Joe Mallia ’92 was the only goalkeeper in school history to lead the squad in goals against average for three straight years. His goals against career average of 0.59 ranks fourth all-time in NCAA history. He still holds the school mark of 20 career shutouts. In 1989, his team competed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time. Mallia is the head women’s soccer coach at Loyola (Md.).
Mike Martin ’89 became the first Monarch sailor to capture the ICYRA Singlehanded National Championship in 1988. He was a three-time ICYRA All-American, making the first team his junior and senior years. In 1997, he won the 505 class World Championship. Martin works for Cannon Business Machines in Costa Mesa, Calif.
Robert Hale ’81 became the first Old Dominion tennis player to earn a top 50 national ranking when he vaulted to No. 43 his senior year. He set a school record 14 straight wins as a senior and compiled a 28-6 record in his two-year career. In 1980, he won the Virginia Intercollegiate singles title. Hale works with the Jamaican Tennis Association.
Kathy Fosina Mustain ’92 still holds the NCAA women’s field hockey record for lowest goals against average (0.48) and career shutouts (71). She played on three NCAA championship teams and was named to the NCAA Championship All-Tourney squad in 1989. A three-time Academic All-State selection, Mustain coaches field hockey and teaches at Bayside High School in Virginia Beach. Pam Neiss ’92, a two-time All-American and member of three NCAA championship field hockey teams, completed her career with 80 assists, 22 goals and 102 points. She ranked third all-time in NCAA history in career assists and twice earned All-America and NCAA All-Tournament honors. Neiss is a current member of the U.S. National Field Hockey team.
Seniors Ticha Penicheiro (Figueira da Foz, Portugal) and John Torgerson (Annapolis, Md.) were named Alumni Association Athletes of the Year for 1997-98 at the spring Honors Banquet. A two-time Kodak and AP All-American, Penicheiro was the recipient of the 1998 Lifetime/Wade Trophy. She helped lead the Lady Monarch basketball team to a 29-3 record and its seventh straight CAA title.
Torgerson, a member of the U.S. National sailing team, placed fourth in the ICYRA Collegiate Singlehanded national championships last fall and guided the Monarchs to the district championships in April.
All-CAA player Mery Andrade (Lisbon, Portugal) will return to school next fall for a final season of basketball. Known for her defensive intensity and emotional leadership, she has played three years for the Lady Monarchs.
Former player Stacy Himes ’97 will join next year’s team as part-time coach. Co-captain of the 1997 NCAA national finalist team, Himes served as an assistant at Virginia Wesleyan last season.
The sailing team won the ICYRA Team Race national championship and ICYRA Collegiate Dinghy Co-ed national title this spring.
In the team race championship, Old Dominion went undefeated in round-robin competition. College of Charleston took second. The university beat Kings Point in the final race of the day to capture the co-ed title.
