ALUMNI ASSOCIATION NEWS
Jean Tolley '84 installed as Association PresidentJean M. Tolley was sworn in as president of the Old Dominion University Alumni Association in June, becoming only the second woman to head the volunteer organization.
A true resident of Hampton Roads, she has lived in four of the region's cities: Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake and, now, Hampton.
Tolley became involved in the Alumni Association in 1991 with the inception of the Oceanfront Chapter (now the Oceanfront Pride), which she continues to serve as both president and secretary. She became an Alumni Association board member in 1993 and is now in her second term. She served as vice president for development for two years and was instrumental in securing a lucrative affinity credit card program and partnership with First USA.
Her theme - and challenge - for the association this year is "The Sky's the Limit." "Each alumnus is a Ôbright, shining star,'" Tolley said. "My wish is for each star to get involved and stay involved with their alma mater."
A 1984 graduate with a bachelor's degree in computer science, Tolley has worked 15 years in the software development industry. She is currently employed by Zel Technologies in Hampton as a test manager and senior test engineer, supporting government contract efforts.
In addition to her volunteer efforts at the university, Tolley has devoted her time and talents to other causes in the area. She served on the Harborfest Logistics Committee from 1991-96, including three years as chair and member of the Executive Committee. She was honored with a Rookie of the Year award for her first year of service on the Executive Committee.
Tolley also has been a TGIF, Jazz and Blues, and Ghent Art Show volunteer for Norfolk Festevents for many years. Additionally, she volunteers her time for Virginia Beach's annual "Blues on the Beach" festival.
Tolley recently has taken on two more important roles in her life; she is a is a newlywed to Dan Singer and "the proud stepmother to two beautiful children - Derek and Jessica."
