More and more of the area's top high school seniors are choosing Old Dominion for their collegiate education.
In the June 3 Virginian-Pilot supplement "Scholastic Achievement: Class of 1999," which recognized the highest achieving seniors at Hampton Roads high schools, 19 of the students indicated they were enrolling at Old Dominion for the fall 1999 semester. With the exception of UVa, more of these students selected Old Dominion than any other state school, including William and Mary, Virginia Tech, VCU and JMU.
"The increasing number of scholastic achievers selecting Old Dominion University further strengthens our commitment to be the school of choice for Hampton Roads' best and brightest," said John R. Broderick, vice president for institutional advancement.
"We are doing a much better job ensuring that students and parents are aware of the Career Advantage Program, the Governor's Technology Scholarships, our outstanding faculty and the fact that we have had students selected for Rhodes, Truman and USA Today Academic All-America awards within the last three years."
Another significant factor in attracting many of the area's top scholars, Broderick added, is that Old Dominion has increased its admission standards twice in the last two years.
