Photo Op with the President

Jennie Matthews, a 2001 ODU graduate and former Army ROTC cadet battalion commander, and a fellow soldier were singled out by President Bush for a photo op during his visit to Fort Lewis, Wash., June 18. “I was sitting in the bleachers behind him,” Matthews recalled. “When he finished his speech and came to shake hands with the soldiers, he shook my hand and the hand of the girl next to me, looked at us and paused. He then said to us, ‘Get over here, you two; wave to the cameras,’ as he hugged us.” The photo was one of two pictures of Matthews that appeared on the MSNBC Web page and is in the White House photo archives. Fort Lewis has more than 25,000 soldiers and civilian workers.
