ODU Hires New Coaches For Baseball And Wrestling
Old Dominion has announced the hiring of two highly regarded coaches for its baseball and wrestling programs.
Jerry Meyers, an assistant at the University of South Carolina for eight years who helped guide the Gamecocks to World Series appearances the past three seasons as pitching coach, is the new baseball head coach.
Steve Martin, a well-known area high school wrestling coach, was selected to succeed Gray Simons, who retired in March after 17 seasons at ODU.
Meyers, who served as an ODU assistant coach in 1996, replaces Tony Guzzo, whose contract was not renewed. Guzzo posted a 300-252 record in 10 seasons with the Monarchs.
Widely regarded as one of the top pitching coaches in college baseball, Meyers oversaw a South Carolina pitching staff that compiled a 53-17 record as the Gamecocks captured the 2004 Southeastern Conference Tournament Championship, NCAA Regional and Super Regional Championships, and finished third at the College World Series. In Meyers eight seasons as pitching coach for the Gamecocks, South Carolina compiled a 372-152 record. Including stints at other schools, he has coached 33 collegiate pitchers who have played professional baseball.
Meyers was a four-year starting pitcher at Iowa State University.
Martin led Chesapeakes Great Bridge High School to 12 Virginia High School state championships in 13 years. He took over the program in 1991 and compiled a 306-15-1 career record.
Great Bridge was the nations top-ranked public high school in wrestling for 2003 and 2004. Martin coached 40 state champions, 35 All-Americans and six national champions. He was NWCA State and Regional Coach of the Year in 1995 and 2000 and was a finalist for National High School Coach of the Year.
Martin was an All-American at the University of Iowa and helped lead his team to two NCAA crowns. He is the son of the legendary Granby High School coach Billy Martin Sr.
