Number, Quality Of Freshmen On The Rise

For the second consecutive year and only the third time in university history, Old Dominion has enrolled a freshman class of approximately 2,000, and comparative statistics indicate that the trend toward ever higher average GPA (3.25) and SAT scores (1058) continues to rise.

The university was poised in September to set a new enrollment record for the fourth consecutive year, with approximately 21,000 students taking classes for the fall 2004 semester. Old Dominion also has enrolled 1,650 transfer students this fall, an increase of 100 over last year.

Freshman applications were up 13 percent, and graduate applications up 4 percent.

Among those accepted for the fall, the university enrolled 526 students with academic distinction (minimum 3.3 high school grade point average and an SAT score of 1180 or above). Over the past four years, Old Dominion has seen a 40 percent increase in the number of students admitted with distinction.

“We measure the quality of our students by a variety of factors,” said Alice McAdory, director of admissions. “This class is an impressive group with a considerable number of students entering with academic distinction, scholastic achievements and awards, and a well-rounded extracurricular life.

“Additionally, Old Dominion continues to celebrate diversity, with students hailing from all 50 states and 50 countries.”
