Irvine B. Hill ’49 of Norfolk, retired vice president and current consultant with Cox Communica-tions Hampton Roads, has been recognized as a Cable TV Pioneer by the Urban League Club of Chicago. He also received the Silver Medal Award at the 2003 Addy Awards, hosted by the Ad Club of Hampton Roads.

1950s
S. Beryl Adler ’51 was re-elected secretary of the Virginia Beach law firm Pender & Coward P.C.’s 2003 managing directors group.

Robert Epstein ’51, an attorney, has opened the Freemason Inn Bed and Breakfast, a renovated 1897 building in Norfolk’s historic district. It offers four suites with fireplaces.

1960s
Burke Margulies ’65, a partner of the law firm Pender & Coward P.C., received the Virginia Beach Bar Association’s Community Services Award for his work with families caring for relatives who are developmentally disabled. A co-founder of the Virginia Beach Community Trust, he formed and chairs the Virginia Beach Trust for the Psychiatrically Disabled.

Charles M. Scott ’66
retired in 1999 from Chesapeake Public Schools, where he taught social studies. He became disabled in 2000 and has had joint replacement surgery in 2000, 2002 and 2003.

Berkley E. Ashby (M.S.Ed. ’68, C.A.S. ’72, Ph.D. ’92)
is the author of a self-published workbook, “About 400 Tips for Teachers,” which he describes as a “hands-on tool for classroom teachers” in grades K-12. The cost is $7.95. Charlene Stant Engel ’68, Ph.D.

Rochelle Spooner ’68
is a speech/language pathologist and yoga therapist with more than 25 years’ experience incorporating yoga, breathing techniques and meditation to help children and adults with limited mobility and special needs. She lectures at hospitals and schools and leads workshops combining yoga and speech pathology. She also has an agency, Advanced Therapeutic Concepts, that employs more than 20 SLPs, OTs, PTs and special educators. Rochelle lives in Piermont, N.Y., “a quaint river town,” with her 17-year-old son, Harte, and their cat, Tao.

Max Bartholomew ’70 of Dominion Virginia Power received the 2002 Friend of Agriculture award in Virginia Beach during a banquet in March.

Robert E. Skinner ’70 wrote a story, titled “Labor Day 1973,” which appeared in a recent issue of War, Literature & the Arts. His essay on the writings of John Faulkner (William’s brother) was published in a recent issue of Mississippi Quarterly.

Robert Swift ’70 retired in 2001 after almost 30 years of teaching health, drug education, sex education and physical education.

Dr. Robert L. Baxter Jr. ’71 recently worked with Alan Rick Fischer ’73 on shooting video in Hampton Roads under contract to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Using local actors, Rick and Bob, who is with Remtech Services Inc., put together 58 minutes of visual images related to home health care. It’s part of a Web-based training project known in the industry as OASIS. Bob hosted another Mountain Rallye last fall “at the mountainless Kill Devil Hills. Many ODU grads attended, including more Baxters than you can shake a stick at.” This Thanksgiving he will host another Rallye at Nags Head; he expects nearly 40 Rallyers. In his spare time, Bob does volunteer kayak and canoe trips for False Cape State Park in Virginia Beach and helps out in a Norfolk soup kitchen. He also serves on the board of Holy Trinity Parish School, located in Ocean View, and works on the “Cool the School” capital campaign.

Thomas J. Brockenbrough ’71 retired this year as president of First Colony Coffee & Tea Co. in Norfolk after 32 years in the business.

James Morgan Davis ’72, president of TowneBank in Virginia Beach, served as director of the 2003 Virginia Beach Neptune Festival. He headed the volunteer leadership team for the festival, which took place Sept. 26-28.

C. Douglas Finney ’72 has been named managing partner of Finney Psychotherapy Associates P.L.C., formerly Avery Finney Psychother-apy Associates P.L.C. of Norfolk. She is a licensed clinical social worker.

Roxanne Lynn Waters Cheney ’73 retired Jan. 1, 2002, from the Marine Corps as a colonel after 26 years in the service. “Most of my challenging and rewarding career was spent in southern California, the Washington, D.C., area and Okinawa, Japan, but my last tour was in Beaufort, S.C.” Roxanne and her husband fell in love with the South Carolina “low country” and have retired there. They enjoy birding, kayaking and golfing. Roxanne recently received a three-year appointment to the Secretary of the Navy’s Retiree Council, responsible for advising the secretary on improvements to benefits, privileges, quality of life and morale of retired personnel. She holds leadership positions in several community organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club and Friends of the Library, takes and teaches classes at the Creative Retirement Center, and is working to become a “master naturalist” to develop a cadre of individuals to help with breeding-bird surveys, reptile and amphibian surveys, butterfly surveys, water quality monitoring and GPS mapping of habitats. rocksandcheney@charter.net

Richard Dryer ’73 was recently promoted to engineering fellow with Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson, Ariz. Barbara Byrd Keenan ’73 (M.S.Ed. ’75) was appointed executive vice president of the Institute of Food Technologists in Chicago, effective Aug. 7. IFT is a not-for-profit international scientific society with 28,000 members working in food science, technology and related professions in industry, academia and government. Previously, Barbara served as president of the Community Associations Institute in Alexandria, Va. In 2002, she was the inaugural recipient of the Barbara Byrd Keenan Award, given by the National Board of Certification for Community Association Managers.

Rich Werber ’73 (M.B.A. ’78), president and owner of Great Atlantic Pools and Spas in Virginia Beach, has been named chairman of Leadership Hampton Roads.

Richard F. Davis II ’75 and his wife, Kinga Gudor Davis from Romania, announce the birth of a son, Richard Andras, on March 26, 2003. They are living in Greenwich Village while Kinga finishes her M.S.W. at NYU. Mark Thiemens (M.S. ’75) received the Year 2002 American Chemical Society Distinguished Scientist of the Year award in San Diego and the 2002 Press Headliner Award from the San Diego Press Club. Mark, who was also listed as “one of 33 people to watch in 2003,” is dean of the Division of Physical Sciences at the University of California at San Diego and a professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

Ronald Williams ’75 was elected treasurer of the United Way of South Hampton Roads board.

Lynn Clements ’76 (M.S.Ed. ’80) was named director of the Depart-ment of Museums and Cultural Arts and executive director for the Virginia Marine Science Museum Foundation Inc. in July 2002.

Marsha Cunningham-Ford ’76 (M.S. ’79), associate professor of preventive and community dentistry at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, received the ADEA/ GlaxoSmithKline Excellence in Teaching Award in March. The honor, which recognizes dental educators who promote excellence in teaching through scholarship and innovation, included $2,500 to enhance her teaching. Marsha has taught at UI since 1979. She lives in Cedar Rapids with her husband, Dennis, and two sons.

John W. “Chip” Iuliano ’76 has served this year as vice president of the Tidewater Builders Association. He is the president of Area Builders of Tidewater Inc.

Grace Wood ’76 writes that she is now Grace McGlynn. Lyle A. Hollowell ’81 received his juris doctor degree in May 2003 from the University of Akron School of Law. He and his wife, Brenda Ellis, live in the Cleveland area.

Amy Antonucci ’82 has been employed since April 2001 as a clinical review nurse for Comfort Care Home Health at Chesapeake General Hospital. She also became the clinical coordinator for the home medical monitoring program in June 2002. Amy continues to volunteer as ministry nurse for Believers Church and serves as a Chesapeake health ambassador. Her husband, Steve, is a lab technician and assistant instructor for the truck driver training program at the Portsmouth campus of Tidewater Community College. Their oldest daughter, Angela, is a junior at Virginia Tech, studying psychology. Their youngest daughter, Cristina, is a junior at Alliance Christian School. Maj. David A. Vosteen ’86, U.S. Marine Corps, returned from Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in August 2002 and left the following January for the Persian Gulf. After floating over on the USS Saipan as the future ops officer and harrier liaison, he switched to the USS Bataan. He flew missions over Baghdad as a harrier pilot and returned home safely to his family on May 18. David is now a T-45s instructor at NAS Kingsville, Texas. Keith Johnson ’88 has returned home after several months in and around Los Angeles, where he served as a supervisory engineer supporting desktop computer deployments, “an integral part of the Navy Marine Corps Intranet project.” The $6.7 billion project “is the largest IT standardization ever attempted and will eventually corral disparate LANS/ BANS into a comprehensive and unified global Intranet.” Keith was honored by his employer, AMSEC LLC, for his work as an engineer and “going the extra mile with a focus on quality.” Since returning to Virginia Beach, he completed his final semester at Cisco Networking Academy and obtained certification. Colette M. Shaw ’89, assistant dean of students and director of residential programs at Franklin & Marshall College, will be the subject of a 30-minute documentary about her “struggle to find inner peace and acceptance within the academic community when she chooses to write a decidedly unscholarly ‘rock ‘n’ roll novel.” The film, “Living the Fantasy,” premieres Nov. 1 at the Lancaster, Pa., college. “Both worlds are very real to me. I can’t imagine living without my passion for higher education, but anyone who knows me well knows that loud guitars get me through the hard times,” Shaw says. “Writing my book, ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again,’ just seemed to bring my worlds together. She was also recognized as the Dean’s Doctoral Scholar from the School of Business. I really enjoy reading the articles and keeping up-to-date with the positive changes the school is undergoing.”

Gaston (M.E.M. ’99), U.S. Navy Reserve, was mobilized in November 2001 to Commandant, Naval District Wash-ington, D.C., as an emergency preparedness and plans officer in support of Operation Noble Eagle (homeland security). Steve was demobilized in November 2002 and returned to his job in Washington, working for Northrop Grumman IT as a senior program analyst. He remains in a ready reserve status.
