Bill Whitehurst: "A Most Remarkable Man"

In regard to the letter to the editor from Allan Colton '62 [Summer 2001], in which he states that Christopher Columbus was buried in Santo Domingo (in contrast to the version of his history teacher, Dr. Bill Whitehurst, who maintained the burial was in Spain), my Encyclopedia Americana (1959) says Columbus died in Spain, and then in accordance with his will, his body was shipped to Santo Domingo for entombment in the cathedral there. (Gosh! I never knew that, but just had to find out who was right.)

I, too, would have to say Mr. Whitehurst was my favorite teacher at the Norfolk Division. When I went to freshman orientation in the summer of 1951, he was so young-looking and energetic I thought he was a sophomore! Imagine my surprise when someone told me he was a professor.

An abiding memory of my school years was when Mr. Whitehurst saw me waiting for a bus one day, and offered me a ride. We drove through some beautiful neighborhoods and carried on casual conversation.

The reason that is so noteworthy is because I have been totally deaf since the age of 9. I can't think of one other teacher in my many years of schooling who was willing to venture a conversation with me. I guess Bill was practicing for his political career, where being able to talk to all kinds of people would be an asset. A most remarkable man!
