Joan Gifford is new chair
Officers, trustees elected to university's Educational Foundation

Three former members of Old Dominion's Board of Visitors, including one who is a graduate of the university, were elected to one-year terms as officers of the university's Educational Foundation for 2001-02.

In addition, two of the three new members elected July 1 to the foundation's board of trustees are former Old Dominion students.

Serving as chair of the Educational Foundation is Joan D. Gifford, president and chairman of the board of Coldwell Banker Gifford Realty Inc. in Norfolk.

Gifford, recipient of the university's Albert B. "Buck" Gornto Jr. Regional Service Award at the Oct. 11 Founders' Day program, has had a long association with Old Dominion. She was a member of the Educational Foundation board from 1993-96 and 1999-2000, and served as chair in 1994-95. She also was a member of the university's Real Estate Foundation board (1995-97 and 1999-2000) and Board of Visitors (1995-99). Gifford served as vice rector of the Board of Visitors in 1998-99.

Anne B. Shumadine, president of Signature Financial management Inc. in Norfolk, is the new vice chairman of the Educational Foundation. She served as a member of Old Dominion's Board of Visitors from 1993-97 and was rector of the board in 1996-97. She served as a member of the Educational Foundation board of trustees from 1997 to 2000.

Bruce T. Bishop, a 1973 graduate of Old Dominion, was elected secretary of the Educational Foundation. A partner in the Norfolk firm of Willcox & Savage, PC, he served on the Old Dominion Board of Visitors from 1972-83. He also was an Educational Foundation board trustee from 1997 to 2000.

Appointed as treasurer was Stephen B. Ballard, president of S.B. Ballard Inc. in Norfolk. He served as an Educational Foundation board trustee from 1997 to 2000.

New members elected to three-year terms on the board of trustees were Richard T. Adams '81, David W. Faeder '78 and Marc Pelaez.

Adams is vice president of e-business for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. He served on the Alumni Association board from 1999-2000.

Faeder is vice chairman of the board for Sunrise Assisted Living Inc. He received a Distinguished Alumni award from the university in 2000 and serves on Old Dominion's Northern Virginia Advisory Committee.

Pelaez is vice president for business development at Newport News Shipbuilding. He joined NNS after 28 years of service in the U.S. Navy.

The Educational Foundation manages endowed funds and other assets of the university valued at more than $100 million.
