1960s

Timothy J. Davis '64, PE, has been promoted to director of mechanical/electrical engineering at MMM Design Group. He has been with the firm for 27 years and was previously director of its mechanical practice on domestic and international projects.

Ray W. Dezern Jr. '67 has been reappointed to a second term of office as Judge of General District Court in Norfolk by the Virginia General Assembly.

W. Raymond Cash Jr. '69 is the quality manager for Rubatex Corp.'s Bedford, Va., plant. He earned his M.B.A. in 1990 from the University of Richmond.

Lt. Gen. Benjamin S. Griffin '69 was promoted in June from major general to his current rank and assigned as the deputy chief of staff for programs, U.S. Army, Washington, D.C. He joined the Army in 1970 and most recently served as commanding general, 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Hood, Texas.


1970s

Arifeen M. Daneshyar (M.A. '70), Ph.D., took part in a 10-week summer voyage sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh's Summer at Sea program. He visited Greece, Spain, Norway, Russia, Belgium, Morocco, Italy, Egypt and Turkey. He taught two courses during the trip, discussing the economies of these countries as well as the economics of the European Union.

Frank O'Donnell '70 retired in September 2000 from the U.S. Secret Service following a 25-year career. He is now in charge of studio protection for Warner Brothers in Burbank, Calif. frank.o'donnell@warnerbros.com

Clarence Ray '70 has been named by Duke Energy as president of Duke Energy Generation Services, a new company established to provide operations and maintenance services for Duke Energy's growing fleet of wholesale merchant power plants in North America. He had served as president and CEO of Duke/Fluor Daniel since 1993. Duke Energy, a Fortune 100 company, is headquartered in Charlotte, N.C.

John A. Mason III '71, PE, has been promoted to principal associate in the architectural and engineering design firm of Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern Inc., headquartered in Virginia Beach. John has been a civil engineer with HSMM since 1985 and will expand his leadership role in the firm's highway engineering and infrastructure services area of practice. He serves on Old Dominion's Visiting Council for Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Richard B. Sisson '71 retired in June after serving United Methodist churches in Virginia Conference for 35 years. He and his wife, Margaret, live in Deltaville, Va. He continues to serve as Rappahannock District mission secretary and on the Virginia Conference Russia Initiative, as well as the Conference Mission Education and Cultivation Section.

Jan R. Dray '74 traveled to Russia in March as a member of a United Methodist Church missionary team. They visited Methodist churches in Stavropol and Pyatigorsk in the North Caucasus region, and each member stayed with a host family. "Russia is undergoing severe economic upheaval since the collapse of the Soviet Union. There was and is no real plan to transition from a communist economy to a capitalist one. The Russian people struggle daily with the things Americans take for granted."

Teresa T. Kelly '74 (M.S.Ed. '78) retired from teaching elementary school in June after 27 1/2 years. Her last three years were in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. Her husband, Jeffrey '75, is still with First Union Corp., working as a credit administrator in the Capitol Markets group. Their only son, Brian, was married in May.

Randy Young '74 (M.S. '76) recently authored a chapter in a TAPPI (Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry) Press textbook. The book is titled "Industrial Environmental Control - Pulp and Paper Industry, 3rd Edition" and the chapter, "Air Pollution Control Equipment and Strategies." Randy is principal scientist with International Paper's Environmental Technology Group. He lives in Mason, Ohio.

John J. Hackett '75 (M.B.A. '77) has a new position as chief executive of Blue Ridge Networks of Chantilly, a provider of virtual private networking services. He previously was senior vice president of sales and marketing for Network Access Solutions.

Clinton Winfield Lanier '75 has practiced law in Vero Beach, Fla., for 21 years. He is a board-certified civil trial attorney and also practices as a Supreme Court of Florida certified mediator. Clint recently obtained his captain's license for vessels up to 100 tons and has formed Caribbean Family Charters, providing seven- and 10-day charters in the Bahamas and north Caribbean aboard an ocean-going sailing catamaran. Glenn Martin '75 was married in October 2000 and moved from Arizona to Georgia. He started a new job as a law enforcement instructor with the Department of the Treasury in November 2000 and bought his first home in January.

Michael A. Miller '75, CIH, has been elected a director of the American Board of Industrial Hygiene, Lansing, Mich. ABIH is the international certifying organization for professional certified industrial hygienists, the scientific discipline of recognizing and controlling health hazards in the workplace and environment. He has been with the Navy Environmental Health Center in Norfolk since 1987, where he is deputy director of industrial hygiene. His wife, Dayna, an RN, is a nurse at Centerville Elementary in Virginia Beach. They have two sons, Chris, a 2001 graduate of Elon College, and Nathan, a rising sophomore at Old Dominion. Jerry L.M. Phillips '75 (M.S. '78) accepted a position in August 2000 as field service instructor in the Department of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati. His duties involve Sun/Solaris System and Oracle Data Base administration for the Division of Pediatric Informatics. The research group he works with is searching for genes implicated in genetic childhood diseases and finding cures. Jerry is responsible for managing a Sun Enterprise 6500, Enterprise 4500, Enterprise 3500 and three Enterprise 450 servers. Ronald N. Van Voorhis '75 writes, "After 15 years as an entrepreneur, I finally decided to get a job (director of Simon Property Group, a safety and security business). I am fortunate to have two grown daughters and four grandchildren. My wife and I live in a little community just outside of Tulsa with our five dogs."

Ronald H. Williams '75, treasurer of the city of Suffolk, was elected this year as treasurer of United Way of South Hampton Roads.

Gary W. "Frank" Gumataotao '76 and his wife, Christina, announce the birth of a son, Joshua Aaron Lizama, on March 10, 2001. Frank serves as vice president/legal counsel of Island Equipment Co. and president of Colliers Monroe Friedlander (commercial and industrial real estate brokerage). He is the primary stakeholder and president of Guam Broadcast Services (a Japanese language FM station catering exclusively to tourists), vice president of Pacific Direct (international wholesaler of medical supplies and equipment) and vice president of Windemere Plantation (real estate developer). Frank is active in the Pentagon-based Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve program, serving as a Guam/CNMI state committee member and ombudsman.

Toni Stanin '77 writes that she recently has taken her maiden name again (Stanin). After working in the field of social work since graduation, Toni began in August a two-year nursing degree program at a community college. She lives at 4715 Cricklewood Road, Greensboro, N.C. 27407.

Leslie-Ann Juergens Brinker '78 recently moved from Roanoke to Omaha, Neb., due to a job opportunity for her husband, Paul. Also making the move was their son Robert. Leslie is an accountant with Scantron Service Group, a nationwide provider of computer installations, maintenance and repair services. She continues to stay active with Alpha Kappa Psi, professional business fraternity.

Donald M. Gay '79, PE, has been promoted to chief mechanical engineer at MMM Design Group. He has been with the firm since 1971.

J. Alan Price '79 became vice president-nuclear technical services at Millstone Power Station in Waterford, Conn., June 1. He is responsible for all engineering, procurement, oversight and regulatory interface for the station. Alan previously was director of nuclear engineering for Dominion Energy's Virginia nuclear power stations at North Anna and Surry. He has been with Dominion 20 years.

David P. Thompson '79 has been named senior vice president for HDR, an employee-owned firm headquartered in Omaha, Neb., that provides engineering, architecture and project development services. He serves as manager of HDR's Virginia operations, which includes offices in Norfolk, Richmond and Alexandria.


1980s

Joan Hanlon Morris '80 received her M.S. in speech-language pathology from East Carolina University in May 2000, and her certificate of clinical competency from the American Speech and Hearing Association in May 2001. She continues to work as a speech-language pathologist for Brunswick County Schools in Shallotte, N.C. Joan and her husband, Craig, celebrated their 15th anniversary in June by taking a trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica. They enjoy boating and living at the beach. cjmorris@atmc.net

Bill Olcheski '80 is a senior executive oncology account manager with GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals. Mark Palmer '80 has joined Goodman Consulting, a division of Goodman & Co., LLP, as a senior consultant. He conducts long-range strategic planning, develops business plans and provides meeting facilitation services for a variety of clients. Goodman & Co. is a certified public accounting, management consulting and technology services firm headquartered in Norfolk.

Kathy Roe Stevens '80 completed a master's in public administration at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, in May. She is the executive director of the Women's Resource Agency Inc. in Colorado Springs and serves on the board of the Colorado Association of Nonprofit Organizations and the alumni advisory board of UCCS.

Jack '81 and Karen Ford Belcher '84 have two daughters, Alexis, 4, and Victoria, 1. They live in Beaumont, Calif. Jack is executive director of Childhelp USA's Southern California programs.

Don Clendenin '81 was promoted Jan. 1 to director of finance, western United States, for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, which owns and operates Sheraton, Westins, W's & St. Regis Hotels. As a result of the new position, he and his wife, Patty, and sons Gavin, 10, and Joseph, 6, have moved to Phoenix.

Mac McClendon '81 is working with Turner/Russell/Davis as the mechanical/electrical/plumbing engineering coordinator on the Greater Richmond Convention Center expansion project. The final phase of construction, the four-block exhibit hall, us due to be completed in 2002. To help bring employees of three construction companies into one management team, Mac coordinated the team's participation in a "Habitat Blitz" project last fall. For five days, a different team of five employees donated their time to help the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity construct homes for three Richmond families.

Pamela A. McKinney (M.S.Ed. '81) has earned a doctorate in education/ educational administration from Virginia Tech. She is the assistant superintendent in charge of elementary school education for Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Pamela and her husband, Frank McKinney III, have a son, Frank IV.

Tuwanna Blunt Urquhart '81 earned a master's degree in education from Old Dominion in December 2000. She was selected as St. Helena Elementary Teacher of the Year (Norfolk Public Schools).

Amy Antonucci '82 is employed by Chesapeake General Hospital as a clinical review nurse for Comfort Care Home Health. She also is a nurse consultant. Amy is entering her third year in a volunteer role as ministry nurse at Believers Church in Chesapeake. Her husband, Steve, is a lab technician/ assistant instructor for the truck driver training program at the Portsmouth campus of Tidewater Community College. Their oldest daughter, Angela, graduated from Portsmouth Christian School and is enrolled this fall at Virginia Tech's School of Animal and Poultry Sciences. She anticipates postgraduate study in the School of Veterinary Medicine. Their youngest daughter, Cristina, is a high school freshman at Alliance Christian School in Portsmouth.

Joanna Lau (M.S. '85) was elected recently as a director to the boards of BostonFed Bancorp Inc. and its two subsidiary banks, Boston Federal Savings Bank and Broadway National Bank. Joanna is CEO and chair of LAU Technologies of Littleton, Mass. Her company serves the defense, biometrics and security software industries through its divisions LAU Security Systems, LAU Information Technologies, and corporate subsidiaries Viisage Technologies and LAU Defense Systems.

Jay '85 and Linda Evens Tate '88 announce the birth of a daughter, Sydney Joyce, on Nov. 24, 2000. She joins siblings James, Matthew, Jacob and Samantha.

Thomas R. Fredette '87 has moved back to Virginia after four years with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He is on the nuclear engineering staff at Dominion Virginia Power's North Anna Nuclear Power Station.

Jennifer Graham Lowe '87 participated this spring in a 17-day, multinational joint exercise in Rockhampton, Australia, as the officer in charge of the Joint Reception Center during her Navy Reserve annual training. Luci Wellborn '87 and her husband, William Hanna, announce the birth of a daughter, Mattie Ferguson, on Jan. 5, 2001. She joins a brother, Jared, 7, and sister, Emma, 5.

Candi James '88 has joined S.B. Ballard Construction Co. as marketing director. Previously, she worked as business development manager with Professional Service Industries. In her new position Candi is responsible for expanding the company's market share and maintaining the current client base. The Virginia Beach firm is one of the 15 largest concrete companies in the nation.

Keith Johnson '88 is a Microsoft-certified systems engineer with MIL Corp. He is part of a cadre of engineers charged with "standing up and manning" the Network Operations Center of the Navy Marine Corps Intranet, "the largest information technology infrastructure ever constructed." It will eventually serve 360,000 users globally. Among his prior assignments was a stint as senior network technician for the Joint Task Force Civil Support group based at Fort Monroe. His efforts there earned him a letter of appreciation from Brig. Gen. Bruce Lawlor as well as the JTFCS commemorative coin. Kenneth E. Rodman Jr. '88, PE, a civil engineer, has been promoted from senior associate to principal by LandMark Design Group, an engineering, planning, surveying, landscape architecture and environmental services firm headquartered in Virginia Beach. He recently managed such projects as the Sentara Port Warwick Medical Arts Building in Newport News, SYSCO-Doughties Food Services Distribution Center in Suffolk and Phase 1 of Harbour View Station West in Suffolk.

Anne Sokol Rogers '88 wrote in May that she was moving to Maine, where she will work for the state Bureau of Health on "tobacco prevention and legislation." ("With this move, I will have lived in half of the New England states.") Anne has finished her doctoral courses and still has her dissertation to write.

Linwood Toppin Jr. '88 has joined Digex as an operations manager, where he is responsible for the operations of approximately 7,000 UNIX and NT servers. Digex provides Web hosting for companies such as Ford, JP Morgan and Martha Stewart.

Brian Vodzak '88, PE, has transferred from the Roanoke office of Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern Inc. to its Virginia Beach office, where he serves as senior mechanical engineer. He was recently promoted to associate. Brian has a diverse background in engineering design, including the design of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and piping and plumbing systems for hospitals and research labs.

Thomas David Capozzi '89 has moved back to Virginia Beach after 2 1/2 years in New Jersey. He is the managing director of marketing for the Virginia Port Authority, with primary responsibility for shipping lines. He and his wife, Amy, were expecting their second child in July.

James B. Dykes '89 has been promoted to major in the U.S. Army and assigned to the Babcock Graduate School of Management at Wake Forest University, where he received a full-tuition academic scholarship.

Matthew '89 and Sandi Bedford Harrah '90 celebrated their 10th anniversary in March. They have two sons, Richard, 6, and Andrew, 2. Sandi recently completed her 10th year at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a mechanical engineer. Matthew is a systems analyst at Dollar Tree headquarters. He previously worked at Allied Colloids (now Ciba), Lillian Vernon and Old Dominion's Computer Center.

Tracy Harris '89 wrote in July that she planned to get married in November 2001. She has a daughter, Maria Gabriela, who is 21 months old. Her new address is 8180 Creedmoor Drive, Rural Hall, N.C. 27045.

O. David Martin '89, PE, has joined Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern Inc. as a mechanical engineer. Headquartered in Virginia Beach, HSMM is one of the largest architectural and engineering design firms in Virginia.

Susan Childers North '89 and her husband, Christopher, announce the birth of a son, Christopher Colt II, on his father's birthday, July 20. Susan is an attorney with LeClair Ryan in Richmond, where she represents employers in employment matters. Her husband represents employees in employment disputes in Hampton Roads. They live in Williamsburg.

Kathleen Kiefer Spillane '89 and her husband, Kevin, announce the birth of their first child, Liam Richard, on April 19, 2001. Bob Tata (M.B.A. '89), an attorney with the Norfolk office of Hunton & Williams, an international law firm, obtained the Virginia state record for a jury verdict ($116 million) for his Virginia Beach client, X-IT Products, LLC, in August in an intellectual-property case involving copyright, trade dress and trade secrets. The case alleged that a North Carolina competitor copied the X-IT Products design and packaging of a home fire-escape ladder. Stacy Bumper Noell '90 and her husband, Anthony, announce the birth of a son, Donovan Anthony, on Aug. 20, 2000. She wrote in June that she was almost finished with her M.Ed. in special education at Elon University.

Greg Williams (M.E. '90) received his Ph.D. in ocean engineering from Texas A&M University in May. He works for PBS&J, a civil engineering consulting firm in Herndon, Va. Greg and his wife, Peggy Hanson Williams '89, have two daughters - Bailey, 5, and Lindsey, 3 - and one son, Wyatt, 19 months. They live in Springfield, Va.

Sandra Harmon Witcher (M.S.Ed. '90) of Chesapeake has graduated with a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies from Virginia Tech's Hampton Roads location. She is the principal at Mt. Zion Elementary School in Suffolk.

Matt Anderson '91 writes, "After living in Puerto Rico for six years and representing Puerto Rico in the Olympics for windsurfing, I am now living in San Diego. I moved here in 1997 to start up Qualcomm in the cell phone business."

Robert W. Camp Jr. '91 has been employed by Sentara Health Care for more than 14 years, holding positions in budgeting, revenue and financial planning/analysis. He is currently a project coordinator, supporting five project leaders who are involved in numerous projects throughout the system.

Doug Connolly '91 (M.S.Ed. '97) and his wife, Jennifer, announce the birth of their first child, Jarrett Davison, on June 25, 2001. They live in Moyock, N.C.

Oliver Hedgepeth (M.E.M. '91, Ph.D. '95) has joined the faculty, in a tenure-track position, at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. He is an assistant professor of engineering science/management and teaches operations research, computer simulation of systems, knowledge management and other graduate-level courses in engineering management. Oliver previously was employed by GRCI of AT&T in Washington, D.C. He and and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Anchorage.

Very Rev. Robert L. Lewis Jr. '91 was recently appointed as the apostolic vicar for the Diocese of the Northeast of the Apostolic Catholic Orthodox Church, as well as a denominational mentor at Boston University School of Theology, where he is working toward a doctor of theology degree in practical theology and ethics. As apostolic vicar, he works with other churches in the Northeast on developing an ecumenical relationship on a regional level. He also serves on the Pastoral Care Advisory Board at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, Mass., and is a co-chair of the Credential Committee of the National Institute of Business and Industrial Chaplains.

Kathleen Glaser (M.S. '92) works as a nurse practitioner in the Foreign Service. She is assigned to the American Embassy in Kiev, Ukraine.

Justine Perry Grant '92 (M.S.Ed. '96) and Jarod Preston Grant '96 are enjoying their son, Luke, 17 months. He was baptized in July. Justine is also enjoying being a stay-at-home mom. Jarod continues to work as an electrical engineer with J.F. Taylor, an engineering firm in Lexington Park, Md., where he helps design manned flight simulators for the Navy.

Sylvie C. Naux-McVicker (M.B.A. '92), her husband, Michael, and their daughter, Tiffany, 4, announce the birth of their son and brother, Claude-Alexander, on Oct. 18, 2000. Michael, a William and Mary Law School graduate, has his own practice in immigration law, and Sylvie says she plans to be a "homemaker" until their son turns 3.

Chris Parrish '92, PE, was promoted to project manager with Hoggard/Eure Associates, PC, in Portsmouth. He has been with the engineering-surveying firm since 1994.

Tammie Brenzovich Willis '92 recently earned an undergraduate degree in music composition and is continuing her studies in Virginia Commonwealth University's master's of music composition program.

Lt. Evan A. Hipsley Jr. '93, U.S. Navy, was recently selected for promotion to lieutenant commander. He earned his M.S. degree in information technology management this year at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. Evan is currently the operations deputy aboard the Naval Security Group Activity, Pensacola, Fla.

Dawn Burke '94 of Virginia Beach has received a master's degree in health and physical education from Virginia Tech. She is an elementary physical education teacher in Chesapeake.

Karen Griffith '94 teaches at Phoebus High School in Hampton and works as a consultant for Oracle Internet Academy, helping other schools implement this academic initiative that began as part of Larry Ellison's Promise program. Last year, Phoebus was one of only 34 academy host sites in the country. The academy teaches database programming (SQL) and JAVA to high school students and offers "a magnificent opportunity for students to graduate with cutting-edge technology skills," Karen says. Michele Kendrick Harris '94 and her husband, Chris, announce the birth of a son, James, on March 2, 2001.

Alan Hoffmeister (M.S. '94), a geological sciences doctoral student at Virginia Tech, presented research on his discovery of signs of drilling in clams (bivalve mollusks) and another bivalved organism, brachiopods, as far back as 290 million years ago, in the Permian period, at the 50th annual meeting of the Southeastern Section of the Geological Society of America, April 5-6 in Raleigh, N.C. Alan, who has been studying a collection of fossils housed at the Smithsonian, said this is the earliest finding of drilling in clams and the first time either group has been studied in a quantitative way in Permian rocks. By the time he graduates in May 2002, he also will have completed a study of the incidence of drilling in a specific genus of brachiopod, Composita. He was to present that research at the annual meeting of the GSA in Boston Nov. 1-10. aph@vt.edu

Holley Rupert-Webb '94 and her husband, Tommy, announce the birth of a son, Trevor Mason, in February 2000. Holley has been taking classes at Virginia Tech's Northern Virginia campus since 1998 and will receive a master's next spring. Thomas A. Westbrook '94, PE, has joined the Portsmouth engineering-surveying firm Hoggard/Eure Associates, PC, as a project engineer. He was previously with HSMM in Virginia Beach.

Dion '95 (M.S.Ed. '96) and Jennifer Wallace Anderson '97 celebrated their third wedding anniversary July 11. Since graduation, Dion had taught sixth-grade social studies at Ruffner Academy in Norfolk and worked as a computer appl
