William F. Whitbeck Jr.
William F. Whitbeck Jr., professor emeritus of marketing, died Jan. 11, 2005. A resident of Irvington, Va., Whitbeck, 80, had retired from ODU in 1995 after 29 years.
He joined the marketing department in 1966 and was promoted to professor in 1970. Whitbeck developed several innovative courses, including Environmental Scanning, Distribution, Entrepreneurship, and Hospital and Health Care Adminis-tration. He served as director of the M.B.A. program, dean of the Division of Continuing Education and director of the Institute of Management.
He was the widower of Shirley Dixon Whitbeck. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Breeden Whitbeck, and three sons, William G. Whitbeck of Williamsburg, and Thomas D. Whitbeck and Christopher R. Whitbeck, both of Norfolk.
Donald K. Marchand Jr.
Donald K. Marchand Jr., associate professor emeritus of geological sciences, died Jan. 27, 2005, following a fire at his Norfolk home. He was 78.
Marchand was on the ODU staff continuously from 1962 to 1991. He was promoted to associate professor in the physics and geophysical sciences department in 1966. In 1969, he accepted the position of dean of men and associate dean of student affairs. He returned to the classroom in 1975 and developed two upper-level earth science courses.
Marchand was instrumental in bringing Sigma Nu fraternity to the campus and was an adviser to ODU’s Eta Chi chapter until his death. He also played a role in the development of the university mascot, Big Blue. The Alumni Association made him an Honorary Alumnus on Jan. 22.
Survivors include his son, D. Kirk Marchand, a 1980 ODU graduate, of College Park, Md.; and two sisters, Dorothy Wahl of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Jimmie Sobek of Pittsburgh, Pa.
Adriene D. Schellings
Adriene D. Schellings, associate professor emerita of library science, died Feb. 12, 2005, in Norfolk. She was the widow of William J. Schell-ings, who was a history professor.
Schellings, who received her bachelor’s degree in French in 1962 from ODU, joined the library staff in 1965 and in 1966 was promoted to the head of the acquisitions department. She was awarded tenure in 1976. She was on the staff for 17 years and played a role in the development of the acquisitions department.
Schellings is survived by her son, Richard Schellings of Norfolk; her sister, Muriel Charton of Norfolk; and two grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the ODU Libraries Scholarship Fund.
Maximilian B. Jones
Maximilian B. Jones, 72, professor emeritus of management, died March 26, 2005, in Virginia Beach. He was a longtime resident of Norfolk.
Jones, who joined the ODU faculty in 1955, taught courses in management and labor relations. He was awarded the rank of professor in 1965. He served as department chair from 1967 to 1973 and again from 1984 to 1990. He retired in 1992.
Jones was predeceased by his wife, Jane Miller Jones, in 1998. Survivors include two daughters, Susan K. Jones and Katherine J. Long, both of Fairfax County, Va.; a brother, Walter B. Jones of Boston; and five grandchildren. He will also be remembered by his closest companion, Doris Defibaugh. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
