Dear Alumni

Wow! What a year it has been as we keep "reaching for the stars." When I started my term, I challenged and encouraged each "star" (alum) to get involved and stay involved with your alma mater. I'm happy to report that many of you took on that challenge . . . and the numbers are still on the rise.

The Alumni Association has much to be proud of as we embark on a new century. Our continued pattern of growth, commitment, involvement, partnership and excellence has truly made us one of the premier alumni programs in Virginia.

Here's just a sampling of recent highlights and successes:

- The culmination of two new long-term affinity partnerships with Milestone Traditions and American Insurance Administrators. You can expect to hear more in the coming months about what they have to offer.

- Ongoing affinity partnerships with FirstUSA, Geico and Barnes & Noble/University Bookstore, which have provided a sound financial base to further our mission while offering alumni high-quality service.

- Continued outreach to alumni across the country through the development of new alumni prides (chapters), such as Los Angeles, San Diego, Boston, Chicago, South Florida and Houston.

- Continued growth in the legislative arena. We now have alumni in more than 80 of the 100 Virginia legislative districts committed to assisting the university in its pursuit of state funding.

- Shamrock Marathon and 2nd Annual Easter Egg Hunt to foster local alumni and community involvement.

- A newly formed partnership with the Wells Theater for our annual holiday gala. The Virginia Stage Company put on a wonderful production of an old-time favorite, "A Christmas Carol." A portion of the proceeds was donated to Old Dominion's performing arts program.

- Meetings with President Koch, the Board of Visitors, college deans and the Educational Foundation to increase their awareness of the Alumni Association and its impact on the university.

- Presenting awards to distinguished alumni and students for their accomplishments and achievements.

- The ongoing pursuit of new and exciting endeavors. Things to watch for on the horizon include: a new and improved alumni Web site, an alumni center, an updated alumni directory and a comprehensive dues membership program.

As my term draws to a close at the end of June, I would like to thank a number of people for their support: President James V. Koch; John R. Broderick, vice president for institutional advancement; and Charlie Roddy, assistant vice president for institutional advancement and director of alumni relations, and his entire staff.

And, of course, a big thank-you goes to the Alumni Association executive committee and board of directors. Their time, talents, support, expertise and love for Old Dominion shine ever so brightly in all that they have accomplished. Their dedication and enthusiasm have greatly enhanced the image of the association and the university.
