FACULTY
Frank A. MacDonald
Frank A. MacDonald, who taught philosophy, psychology and sociology at the Norfolk Division in the early 1950s, died Jan. 4, 2006, at Williamsburg Landing, where he was a resident.
MacDonald, who also served for a time as dean of the faculty, went on to teach at the College of William and Mary in 1955. He retired in 1976.
Survivors include three daughters, Nancy Weaver of Tampa, Fla., and Williamsburg; Margaret Dougherty of Pittsburgh; and Dorothea MacDonald of Palm Coast, Fla.
Anne Barber Harris
Anne Barber Harris, who taught history at Old Dominion from 1963 to 2002, died Feb. 20, 2006, in her Norfolk home.
Harris taught primarily on an adjunct basis, but was also called on in some years to teach full time. She taught undergraduate courses in World Civilization, U.S. History, Social and Cultural History of the Old South, and Southern Womanhood: The History of a Symbol. She also led graduate seminars on The Middle Ages and Anglo-American Relations.
Harris is survived by her husband of 44 years, David Alan Harris, an ODU associate professor emeritus of history. Other survivors include her daughter, Deborah H. Houston of Moyock, N.C., and two granddaughters.
Memorial donations may be made to the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Capital Campaign Fund.
P. Stephen Barna
Peter Stephen Barna, professor emeritus of mechanical engineering and mechanics, died April 14, 2006, at his Norfolk home. He was 94.
A native of Hungary and a veteran of the Australian Army, he moved to the United States in 1963 as a visiting professor at Auburn University. He joined the Old Dominion College faculty in 1966 as a professor of engineering, and became an American citizen in 1968. He retired from ODU in 1977.
Barna, an important contributor to wind flow research, is credited with designing and obtaining funding for a laboratory-sized wind tunnel on the ODU campus.
A former ODU student, E. James Hayes ’89, established the P. Stephen Barna Endowed Professorship for Aerospace Engineering in 2003.
Barna, who was also known as an inventor, author, photographer, musician and artist, was to have his memoirs published by Author House in June 2006.
He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Elizabeth Barna. Survivors include his daughters, Stephanie Burr and Sharon Flowers, and two grandchildren.
