Norfolk Sports Club Honors Field Hockey’s Janelle Engle
Janelle Engle of Mt. Joy, Pa., topped off her collegiate field hockey career by winning the Norfolk Sports Club’s Tom Scott Award, which is presented annually to the best ODU senior student-athlete. Engle helped lead the Lady Monarchs to the Colonial Athletic Association title and the semifinals of the NCAA national championships in her senior year.
She was named CAA Player of the Year and earned first team All-America honors from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Engle led ODU and the CAA with 20 goals her final year. She was selected by the ODU Alumni Association as the Female Athlete of the Year.
In the classroom, Engle was a three-time NFHCA All-Academic selection and was chosen to the USA Today All-USA College Academic Team. A music major, she graduated in May with a 4.0 grade point average.
Engle was first violinist in the Diehn String Quartet and concertmaster of the ODU Symphony. She was named CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year and was a co-recipient of the Jack Wilkins/James Howard Scholar Athlete of the Year Award.
