Former Golfer Stars In Golf Channel Show
Former golfer Ashley Davis ’07 and her best friend, Ashleigh Korzack, made it to the final round of the Golf Channel reality show “Highway 18” last year, ultimately finishing second in the tournament, which awarded more than $100,000 in cash and prizes to the winning team. The season started in August with five twosomes, who each week raced for clues and challenges on golf courses throughout Florida. The finale aired Sept. 30.

Davis, a native of Ontario, owns a number of school records, including lowest career stroke average (79.09).

“Yogi” Rated Among Region’s Best Athletes
Yolanda “Yogi” Hightower-Boothe ’85
, a vital part of ODU’s rise as a national power in field hockey, was chosen in December by The Virginian-Pilot as one of the 50 greatest athletes of South Hampton Roads.

In 1982, she helped lead the Lady Monarchs to their first NCAA title. She earned All-America honors twice and was a two-time member of the NCAA All-Tournament squad. The Virginia Beach native completed her career with 62 points and 48 assists, ranking her fifth and third, respectively, all-time at ODU.

Rowing team Shows Promise In First Season
The women’s rowing team closed its first fall season as a varsity program by finishing in the top half of the field in both races at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville. ODU was 10th in the 23-team field of the Women’s 4+ with a time of 15:41.28. The boats ahead of ODU were from four schools that were ranked in the Top 20 last season. “We have such a long journey ahead, but this was a huge step in the right direction,” said coach Heather Weisel. The Lady Monarchs open their spring season at Clemson on April 4.

Tennis Players Ranked At Start Of Spring Season
Tobias Fanselow began the spring season ranked 81st nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, and the doubles team of Fanselow and Aleksandr Seleznev ranked 43rd. From the women’s team, senior Charleen Haarhoff opened the spring campaign ranked 88th, while the doubles team of Haarhoff and Nadine Fahoum ranked 40th nationally and No. 1 in the East Region.

Monarch Soccer Players Honored
Senior forward Katie Watson (Woodbridge, Va.) was selected as a First Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region forward by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and senior midfielder Trevor Banks (Madison, Wis.) was named to the Second Team All-South Atlantic Region team by the NSCAA. He was also chosen to attend the 2009 Adidas MLS Player Combine.

Donovan, Krzyzewski Share National Award
U.S. Olympic Team head coaches Anne Donovan ’83 and Mike Krzyzewski of Duke were named as co-recipients of the 2008 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year award. They piloted their respective teams to the gold medal in Beijing, securing automatic berths in the 2010 FIBA World Championships. Both coaches won the award in 2007.
