1950s
Dr. Charles Fletcher ’50 retired from his dental practice on Aug. 30 after 50 years of treating thousands of patients. He practiced in the same Kempsville location all those years, Woodway Lane near the intersection of Princess Anne and Witchduck roads, in Virginia Beach. Quoted in a Virginia Beach Beacon story about her father, Terry Cherry, who worked with him in the office for seven years, said, “It’s a privilege to know your father in a working environment like I was able to. He showed he cared in big ways and small ones, too.”

Arifeen M. Daneshyar (M.A. ’70) served as the director of global studies with the University of Virginia’s Semester at Sea program, visiting Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan.
Linda Lindsey Davis ’70 has been appointed to the Ann Henshaw Gardiner Distinguished Professorship in Nursing at Duke University, where she also is a Senior Fellow in the Duke Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development. Ronald E. Copley ’72 (M.B.A. ’74) of Wilmington, N.C., was appointed Nov. 22 by Gov. Mike Easley to the North Carolina Lottery Oversight Committee. Ronald is president and founder of Copley Investment Management, where he manages more than $45 million in assets. He has served as an investment adviser to the Jordanian Social Security Investment Commission via the U.S. Agency for International Development. He previously consulted in 10 nations to train security analysts and portfolio managers to take the Chartered Financial Analyst exam.
Robert L. Ayers (M.B.A. ’73) was elected in November as a member of the board of directors of Watts Water Technologies Inc. in North Andover, Mass. He was also elected to serve as a member of the board’s Audit Committee and the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee. Robert was senior vice president of ITT Industries and president of ITT Industries’ Fluid Technology from October 1999 to September 2005. He continued to be actively employed by ITT Industries until September 2006, focusing on special projects. Watts Water Technologies is a world leader in the manufacture of innovative products to control the efficiency, safety and quality of water within residential, commercial and institutional applications.
David Goodrich ’73 (M.S.Ed. ’97) retired from Isle of Wight County Public Schools in June 2006.
Kenneth P. Morrison ’73 and Angelita Silvestre-Diaz were married in August 2005. They own and operate a bus company in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, for which Kenneth is the CFO. He splits his time between there and Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he is involved in real estate investment along the oceanfront. He retired from the American Red Cross in 2003.
Ellen Dascher Butzen ’74 wrote in November that she recently moved to The Villages, Fla., with her faithful black Labrador, Dascher. “My wonderful husband passed away from cancer 11 months ago and I now live close to family. I play golf and am enjoying retirement.”
John Yoder ’74 and Jane Keil were married Oct. 13, 2006, in Sarasota, Fla., where they now reside. As newlyweds, John and Jane are enjoying sabbaticals, exploring nature after their first careers as a health administrator and teacher. Gray F. “Buzz” Morris (M.S.Ed. ’75) is employed as senior labor relations specialist for the U.S. Depart- ment of Justice in Washington, D.C. He and his wife, Joanne, have two children: Emily, a freshman at the University of Mary Washington, and Ashley, a sophomore at Yorktown High School in Arlington, Va. The family lives in Arlington.
Donald Fithian ’76 wrote in August that he had recently relocated from Key West to Tampa to work for the U.S. Central Command as a supervisory program analyst. He lives at 4312 Fincastle Court, Tampa, FL 33624.
Mary G. Commander ’77, an attorney practicing in Norfolk for the past 25 years, is one of 15 lawyers in the state to be selected as a “Leader in the Law” by Lawyers Weekly. She also is listed among the “Legal Elite” in Family Law by Virginia Business magazine for 2006.
Leslie-Ann Juergens Brinker ’78 took a new position last spring as the director of financial services for the lieutenant governor of the state of Indiana. Leslie lives in Carmel, Ind., with her husband, Paul, and their 11-year-old son, Robert.
Rob Turner ’78 reports the death of his mother, Nancy D. Turner ’66 of Smithfield, on Sept. 9, 2006, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She taught school for 35 years, most recently at Isle of Wight Academy. Survivors include her husband, Robert; a daughter, Mary Turner Saunders (M.S.Ed. ’83) of Carrollton, Va.; and another son, Frank, of Norfolk.
Wayne Batten ’79 reports that “after over 17 years of dedicated service,” he was laid off by Lockheed Martin in August 2006. He is now with Harris Corp., where he is continuing his career as a thermal engineer and currently working on the design of spacecraft antenna systems. Yvonne Wilson Boone ’79 had paintings in the 8th Annual Miniature Arts Exhibit and Sale at the Black Mountain (N.C.) Center for the Arts, near Asheville. The juried show ran Dec. 8 to Jan. 27 and featured entries from across the country. All of the works were no larger than 4 inches by 6 inches. She also had five paintings in the International Fine Art in Miniature Winter Holiday Exhibition, Miniature Art Society of New Jersey, at World Fine Art Gallery, Chelsea, in New York. Christopher Coffing (M.S. ’80) of Norfolk is among an elite group of financial advisers who were recognized last year in Virginia Business Magazine’s special report on “The Winner’s Circle,” an annual ranking of the top advisers in Virginia. He was selected based upon following the industry’s best practices and on a range of qualifications, including revenue and customer satisfaction. Christopher has been with Merrill Lynch for 22 years and currently manages more than $200 million in assets from individual and corporate clients. He serves on the board of the Virginia Opera.
Charlie Hobbs (M.S.Ed. ’80) retired last year after 38 years with Navy College.
Ruth McVoy Martin ’80 wrote in October that she would be taking a career “pause” to undertake an extensive sailing trip with her husband, John. Leaving in December 2006, they planned to take 18 months to circumnavigate South America on their 53-foot ketch Moon Dog. Ruth has just completed 25 years of federal service. Most recently she was with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta as chief management official for the Coordinating Center for Environmental Health and Injury Prevention. Previously she served 23 years with NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, where her last position was as associate director for program integration. Ruth also spent a year recently with the National Federation of the Blind in Baltimore as director of programs for its Jernigan Institute for Research and Training.
Lewis Warren Jr. ’83 has assumed a new position as deputy head of Global Investment Banking within Banc of America Securities LLC. He is based in New York. As part of his role, he will focus on increasing connectivity between GIB and other Bank of America businesses, including Global Commercial Banking, Global Treasury Services, and Global Wealth & Investment Management. Lewis has more than 20 years of investment banking industry experience. He comes to Bank of America after a 10-year career with Citigroup, where he held a number of significant senior management positions, including head of the Canadian M&A practice. Most recently, he led the firm’s Business Development for Global Transaction Services.
Lt. Cmdr. Steven B. Lowe ’84, U.S. Coast Guard, was assigned last year to the position of commander, Sector Field Office, Grand Haven, Mich. He previously served as chief of prevention at Sector Lake Michigan. Steven enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1987. He and his wife, Susan, have two children, Eliza and Bennett.
India Sharpe Meissel ’86 was named the 2006-07 Secondary Teacher of the Year by the National Council for the Social Studies. A 20-year veteran of teaching, India currently teaches at Lakeland High School in the Suffolk Public Schools system.
W. Forrest Robertson ’86, P.E., has joined the Virginia Beach office of Michael Baker Jr. Inc. as senior project manager. Previously, he worked as a consulting engineer for 17 years and as an employee of the city of Norfolk utilities department. His engineering expertise includes design of water storage, transmission and distribution facilities, and system modeling, leak detection and sanitary sewer conveyance.
Lt. Cmdr. Benito Baylosis ’87, U.S. Navy, received the Bronze Star last August in his hometown of Norfolk. He was honored for his work in Baghdad, where he analyzed more than 1,000 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during his year there. He was credited with saving “countless coalition forces’ lives.” According to the citation, “He developed and monitored over 136 bombmaker profiles.” The citation went on to say that “no one in the U.S. armed forces knows more about enemy IED initiators utilized in the Iraqi theater of operations.” While serving in Iraq, Benito led a team of military specialists, primarily engineers, from the United States, Britain and Australia. After receiving his award, Benito was scheduled to return to his regular duty station in Naples, Italy, where his family lives.

Keeley McDonald Riddle ’90 of Landing, N.J., was elected vice president collegiate of Zeta Tau Alpha fraternity at its national convention last July. A practicing attorney, Keeley and her husband, Rick, have one daughter, Haley.
Timothy R. Barry ’91 (M.S. ’94) has returned to Old Dominion as associate director of the Virginia Applied Technology and Professional Development Center, an enterprise center of the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology. Tim and his wife, Maria ’84, celebrated their 20th anniversary last year and live in Virginia Beach with their daughters, Katie, 17, and Paige, 12.

Alice “Ally” Jimenez Klopsch ’94 (formerly Jimenez Skarda) celebrated her five-year anniversary with IBM in April 2006. She is an IBM brand identity manager working to protect the IBM brand by ensuring that marketing messages and activities reinforce one another and strengthen the brand. She also enhances IBM’s brand permission with both C-level and technology clients, and elevates the image and effectiveness of the “On Demand” campaign so that it stands out from its imitators.
Colin B. Konschak (M.B.A. ’94), a registered pharmacist and six sigma black belt, has a new position as a principal with the Courtyard Group, which is a leading health care strategy and management consulting firm. Colin previously worked for IBM Global Business Services as an associate partner and was responsible for leading consulting engagements for health care providers across the country. David Adams ’97 is working on his M.A. in leadership at Duquesne University. “I can swear that I said I would NEVER go back to school,” he writes. Charlene Gerbig (M.S.Ed. ’97) wrote last year that she was looking forward to her seventh year at Hillside School in Closter, N.J., where she teaches second grade. She is also an adjunct professor for the College of New Rochelle, where she teaches a class in Early Childhood Language and Literacy. In her spare time Charlene loves to cheer for her son Alex, who plays varsity high school baseball, and visit Newport, R.I., with her husband, where their son James attends the University of Rhode Island.
Stephen Zawisa ’97 was busy last summer nurturing and building Ocean Eagle Kayak. His 11-year-old son, Gage, now lives with him full time, and Stephen is enjoying the joys and challenges of single parenthood. Melissa Range (M.F.A. ’98) was one of six recipients of the 2006 Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Awards, which are given annually to women writers who demonstrate excellence and promise in the early stages of their careers. The $15,000 awards were presented last September in New York. Melissa is a 33-year-old poet from Decatur, Ga. Her poems have appeared in The Paris Review, Poetry London and Western Humanities Review, and she has been working on a collection of poems, titled “Scriptorium,” that “takes as its major theme the sacred both in and as language.” The selection committee cited her “passionate involvement and sheer inventiveness with language.” Melissa is also working on a second manuscript, titled “The Lay of Wandering Edris,” a long poem about the Appalachian South.

Khaled Elamrawi (Ph.D. ’99) last year became Intel’s general manager for Egypt, the Levant and North Africa. After earning his doctorate in electrical engineering (semiconductor processing), he joined Intel in 1999 as a senior process engineer in Oregon. He later held posts in strategic planning and marketing.
Holly Kildoo ’99 writes that in all of the excitement, she and her husband, Todd, forgot to announce earlier the birth of their first child, Tyler William, on Oct. 27, 2005. “We waited 10 years for this and had looked forward to getting an ODU baby bib!” Holly says.
Kathlyn H. Loudin ’99 (M.P.A. ’03) is a project manager at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Va., where she supports a major defense acquisition program. She continues to publish in trade magazines and journals, and says that she is “slowly” pursuing a Ph.D. in public management and public policy at Virginia Tech.

Shannon L. Bowman (M.S.Ed. ’00) is now a national board-certified teacher, with certification as a middle childhood generalist. She is a technology and curriculum integration specialist at Hidenwood Elementary and B.T. Washington Middle School in Newport News.
Nicole Koclanes ’00 (M.S.Ed. ’01) and Jared Starvatow ’01 were married Nov. 10, 2006, in Pelham, N.Y.
William “Billy” Quinn Jr. ’00 and Amanda Hatcher Quinn ’00 announce the birth of a daughter, Emme Elizabeth, on May 16, 2006. She joins Will, age 2. The family lives in Chesapeake. Billy is a mechanical engineer with Pace Collaborative in Virginia Beach and Amanda is a stay-at-home mom.
Tim Roebuck ’00 was recently promoted to senior manager, Audit and Enterprise Risk Services, with Deloitte & Touche LLP. He is responsible for leading the data quality and integrity efforts for the North Florida practice, with a focus on market growth in the consulting and attest channels. Anne Mittelstaedt ’01 and Aaron Rambow were married in September 2006. Anne worked for General Motors for five years after graduation, and recently made a job change to an ad agency in the Detroit area. Aaron, a 2000 graduate of Michigan State University, is a sales manager for a recruitment firm in the Detroit area. Anne was a four-year member of the ODU swim team and Aaron played baseball at a junior college. They live in Royal Oak, Mich.
Estella Rodriguez Torres ’01 wrote in August that her family had recently moved from Washington, D.C., to Yokosuka, Japan. “We are here for three years and are excited to be here and go on new international adventures. We have been able to travel to many countries already, such as Thailand, Singapore and even China. Japan is a wonderful country with wonderful people!”

Lt. Col. Chris Ellis (M.P.A. ’02), U.S. Marine Corps, is the director of operations, Blount Island Command, Jacksonville, Fla. He wrote in November that he spends a lot of time in Iraq in support of the Marine Corps logistics war efforts.

Jo Anna Marable Chapin ’04 and her husband announce the birth of a daughter, Jasmine, on July 7, 2006. Jo Anna currently is a stay-at-home mom. She and her husband moved to Langhorne, Pa., to be closer to family. “I miss Virginia and the beaches so much. I can’t wait till Jasmine is old enough to take her there and show her around. She will be sporting some ODU outfits soon. I will soon be looking to start my career in the communications field.”
Jennifer Dizon ’04 has accepted a position at Edelman, a global public relations firm. She is an assistant account executive at the Washington, D.C., office.
Jason Moore ’04 spent five weeks last summer as a volunteer helping residents in Lusaka, Zambia, create and maintain wheelchairs for the disabled. In the process, he helped create an ambulance wheelchair, which has the potential to impact access to medical attention in the rural areas of the country. Jason is a graduate student at the University of California, Davis, and volunteers for Whirlwind Wheelchair International, a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization that designs models and offers wheelchair workshops in developing countries.
Sandra J. Bradley ’05 wrote last summer that she had been accepted to Liberty University to pursue a master’s degree in divinity.
Susan H. Dukes ’05 and her husband, Keith, announce the birth of their first child, Kaitlyn Brooke, on May 4, 2006.
Roxanne Enix ’05 and Joe Daniel, a current ODU student, were married July 14, 2006. They were expecting a child in February. Roxanne got a new job last year as a personal banker with Bank of America.

Stephen Pohniuchak ’05 got a job last summer as a recreation specialist/facility manager for the U.S. Coast Guard in Kodiak, Alaska.
Jason K. Rawls ’05 and Ashley Anne Grimm were married July 22, 2006. Jason writes that they met in a biology lab, where they were lab partners. Ashley is pursuing a B.F.A. degree at Old Dominion.
