The book offers a blend of race facts and personal experiences about the 50 best marathons and what makes them special. Courses of all types are included, from the rim of a volcano in Crater Lake National Park to the city streets of Chicago. www.rainmakerpublishing.com
DORIS NEILL MOZLEY (M.A. ’76), Divorce: Military Style aka The Throwaway Military Wife System, Mozley Publishing. The book describes efforts to get laws enacted to protect military wives in the event of a divorce. According to Mozley, the military divorce rate is much higher than that of the civilian population. “This book is dedicated to the thousands of long-term military wives who have been abandoned by their husbands, betrayed by Congress, cheated (often) by the courts, screwed by incompetent lawyers as well as by the largest ex-military spouse organization which was founded and financed to work for justice for them, namely, Ex-partners of Servicemen (Women) for Equality.” 804-755-6596
RAE PEARSON ’96, Still Standing, Infinity Publishing. Pearson’s first book gives voice to real women across the country as they share stories, in their own words, of success and failure, lessons along their journey and what they have yet to master. “The dynamos that I am fortunate to have in my life had rebounded from low points I found hard to believe. Yet each one was able to rise up and conquer the world in one way or another,” Pearson says, adding, “Life throws unexpected curveballs and this book can prepare [women] to knock out whatever life pitches at them.” It also, she says, offers men “insight on why women walk, talk and think as they do.” www.infinitypublishing.com
ROBERT PUENTES ’90, Taking the High Road: A Metropolitan Agenda for Transportation Reform, Brookings Institution Press. K. SUE ROPER (M.S.Ed. ’91), Ruff’s War: A Navy Nurse on the Frontline in Iraq, Naval Institute Press. Roper, a 21-year veteran of the Navy Nurse Corps, helps tell the story of lead-author Cheryl L. Ruff, who retired from the corps in 2003 after her final tour of duty in Iraq. Despite 25 years of providing patient care in naval hospitals around the world, nothing had prepared Cmdr. Ruff for what she experienced as a member of Bravo Surgical Company. The only female nurse anesthetist at the front, Ruff and the rest of her surgical team endured the brutal conditions of the desert while regularly confronting questions of life and death. Horrific operating conditions, coupled with the gruesome images of shredded bodies and the cries of wounded children, became Ruff’s world. www.usni.org
