Happy Birthday ODU

While it was a bit difficult to pick out people in the crowd when hundreds of students, faculty, staff and alumni formed a “human 75” on Kaufman Mall Sept. 20 to kick off ODU’s 75th anniversary celebration, the program did include a number of familiar faces. Joining Big Blue at the event were:

• Patricia Gluchowski Melise ’89 (M.S.Ed. ’95), the new principal of Norfolk’s Larchmont Elementary, who, along with about two dozen of the school’s students, presented the university with a birthday card and a chorus of “Happy Birthday.”

• Former President Alfred B. Rollins Jr. (1976-85) and his wife, Helen Jones.

• President Roseann Runte and former President James L. Bugg Jr. (1969-76) and his wife, Anne.

• Adolphus Hailstork, professor of music, whose composition “The Lion’s Roar” had its world premiere at the celebration, as performed by the University Orchestra under the direction of music professor Dennis Zeisler.

ODU’s celebration of its 75th anniversary will conclude at 12:30 p.m. April 20 with the burying of a time capsule on campus.
