1950s
Ed Tyree ’56 of Virginia Beach encourages alumni from the 1950s to send in their news. Over the past couple of years, Ed has published a number of articles in a Senior Experience booklet, including pieces on Babe Didrickson Zaharias, Josh Gibson, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson and Dale Murphy.

1960s
Tom Kanoy ’61 of Hampton received the 2006 Sports Person Emeritus award in June from the Peninsula Sports Club. He played first base from 1956-58 for the Norfolk Division baseball team and was co-captain the final two years. Tom played nine seasons (1952-60) of semipro ball as both catcher and first baseman. A former youth baseball coach, he has been a member of the Peninsula Sports Club since 1984. Tom retired from the Virginia Department of Health in 1995 as a senior environmental health specialist.

MaryAnn Faubion Kohl ’69 continues to write books of art projects for children. “Storybook Art: Hands-on Art for Children in the Styles of 100 Great Picture Book Illustrators” is one of her favorites. Suzanne Styers Boundy (M.S. ’70) was voted Volunteer of the Year for WDIY, a community public radio station and NPR member, in Bethlehem, Pa. This is the second time in the station’s 10-year history that she has been so honored. Suzanne, who is retired, previously served as director of dental hygiene at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem and at the Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis. She has edited two volumes of a textbook for the C.V. Mosby Co., “Current Concepts in Dental Hygiene.”

Miriam Villageliu Bixler ’72, Ph.D., R.N., writes that after more than 20 years of teaching maternity and psychiatric nursing, she retired with her husband, Tim, near Brenham, Texas (home of Bluebell Ice Cream). She currently is the director at Brenham State School. Miriam would like to hear from 1971 and 1972 nursing graduates, including Jill Z., Martha F., Linda H. and “Twilly.” Her new address is: P.O. Jack Battenfield (M.A. ’73) writes that his wife, Margaret Mann Battenfield of Gainesville, Fla., died July 15, 2006, at the E.T. York Hospice Care Center in Gainesville. She was a program assistant in purchasing at the University of Florida. Jack was director of public relations at ODU from 1971 to 1981. Margaret attended the university and was a past president of the Faculty Wives Club.

Vincent M. Burgess ’73 of Richmond received the Virginia Board of Transportation Safety’s Lifetime Safety Achievement Award. He was cited for his efforts in promoting tougher DUI laws and child-safety regulations. Vince, who currently heads the state Department of Veterans Services, is a former administrator of transportation safety services at the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

Peter G. Griffin ’73 has been promoted to managing director - investments with Griffin Investment Group of Wachovia Securities in Norfolk.

Irving Frank ’74 proudly reports that his son Marc starts his freshman year at ODU this fall.

Ed Gilbert ’74, co-founder of Gilbert & Manjura Marketing in Longwood, Fla., an advertising and public relations agency specializing in Florida tourism, was chosen by Visit Florida as an inductee into the Florida Tourism Hall of Fame. Ed is a former director of the Norfolk Visitors Bureau.

Kenneth G. Stepka ’74, P.E., was named by the National Society of Professional Engineers to its 2006 class of Fellow Members. The honor recognizes active NSPE members who have demonstrated exemplary service to the profession, the Society and the community. Kenneth lives in Virginia Beach and is the marketing manager for Clark Nexsen.

Charles Gillean ’75, supplier diversity program manager for AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals in Wilmington, Del., was recognized as Delaware’s 2006 Veteran Small Business Champion by the U.S. Small Business Administra-tion’s Delaware District Office. He was also honored as champion for the mid-Atlantic Region among state winners from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, Virginia and the District of Columbia, and was a finalist for the national award. The distinction recognizes his commitment to expanding economic opportunities for veteran-owned small businesses in the mid-Atlantic Region.

Jerry L.M. Phillips ’75 (M.S. ’78) received a promotion, effective Sept. 1, to assistant professor, Division of Biomedical Informatics, Department of Pediatrics, at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

Jack Rhoton (M.S.Ed. ’75), professor of science education in the Claudius G. Clemmer College of Education at East Tennessee State University, received the 2006 National Outstanding Leadership in Science Education Award. Sponsored by the National Science Education Leadership Association and Prentice Hall Publishing Co., it recognizes an exceptional member who leads the region, state and nation in science education. Jack, who has been with ETSU since 1987, is also a science supervisor in the Kingsport (Tenn.) School System.

Donna Keklock Allen ’76 lists her new address as 610 Ashe Ave., Cary, NC 27511.

David ’76 (M.E. ’78, Ph.D. ’86) and Barbara Livingston (M.S.Ed. ’92) have moved to Buchanan, Va. Dave is a professor of electrical and computer engineering and a colonel in the Virginia Militia at Virginia Military Institute. Barbara teaches first grade at Buchanan Elementary School. Their youngest son, Ryan, graduated from Radford University in May with a B.S. in philosophy. Adam, their oldest son, received his B.S. in computer engineering in 2004 and his M.S. in computer engineering in 2006, both from ODU. “He is carrying on the legacy by pursuing the Ph.D. in computer engineering from ODU,” Dave says.

Mark ’76 and Katie Jarvis Long ’78 moved from New Jersey to Memphis, Tenn., last year, where Mark accepted a position as director of the Office of Human Subjects’ Protection at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “Managing the ethical review of biomedical research is stimulating and challenging, and it allows me to use the philosophical training I received from Drs. Hatab, Brenner and McCleary some 30 years ago,” he writes. Katie continues to work at home in her thriving Internet business as a health science writer and editor. Their son, Ben, graduated with distinction from UNC-Chapel Hill in May. He works at the UNC Student Stores as a Web designer. Mark adds, “We spend our free time enjoying Memphis’ varied music, arts and entertainment scenes, and I play as much tennis as my legs will allow. Joseph Aloysius Mullen III ’76 received the doctor of ministry degree in May from Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia.

Sandra W. Stephan ’76 retired as Distinguished Professor Emeritus from Youngstown (Ohio) State University in May. Her career included both faculty and administrative positions – four years as university composition coordinator, six years as chair of the English department, four years as dean of the Metro College, plus other academic/administrative assignments. Sandra looks forward to new challenges and venues and thanks the “superb faculty at ODU” for their encouragement and academic preparation for graduate school. Midge Wilson (M.S. ’76), Ph.D., a 2000 recipient of ODU’s Distinguished Alumni Award, became an associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at DePaul University in Chicago in July. She oversees the Liberal Studies Program.

Roger H. Mandel ’77 has a new position as a manager of business operations with San Diego Research Center, which is doing business with the Department of Defense. He previously worked as a business manager, financial analyst and contracts administrator with research and development firms dealing with laser, optics, communications and computer technologies, and has worked with the U.S. Civil Service. In all, Roger has more than 35 years’ experience in contract administration, industrial application engineering, field service engineering, and manufacturing and project management. He is noted as an expert in project performance measurement, also known as Earned Value Management (EVM). Sean R. Tief ’77 has been named vice president of personal lines products and systems for Harleysville (Pa.) Insurance. He is responsible for the overall management of personal lines products – including product portfolio development and pricing – and will oversee activities related to the company’s personal lines IT strategy and systems. He joined Harleysville in 2001 as assistant vice president of product management. Sean lives in Harleysville with his wife, Deborah, and their three children.

Ken Smith ’78 is a licensed clinical social worker and works as a psychotherapist in Fayetteville, N.C. Yvonne Wilson Boone ’79 had a watercolor accepted in the Rhode Island Watercolor Society’s 2006 National Watermedia Competition, Oct. 8 to Nov. 2, in Pawtucket, R.I. She also recently had work in an invitational group show, In Miniature: Small Works by Hampton Roads Artists, at the Charles H. Taylor Arts Center in Hampton.

Barry Mensh ’79 has begun his seventh year at Robert E. Lee High School in Fairfax County, Va. (his alma mater), where he hopes to finish his career in three more years. He teaches biology and coaches cross-country. Judith Evans Piersall ’79 was appointed by Virginia Gov. Mark Warner to the Virginia Board of Nursing in 2003. In January 2006 she was elected by the board to serve as president. Judy is director of the Portsmouth Public Schools’ School of Practical Nursing.

1980s
Donna Allen Prather (M.U.S. ’81) has been promoted to vice president for academic affairs at TransPacific Hawaii College in Honolulu. She will oversee the academic curriculum and be responsible for ensuring an academic environment whose focus is student success. Donna has been with TransPacific (formerly Kansai Gaidai Hawaii College) for 13 years, most recently as coordinator of the English as a Second Language program.

Richard “Geno” Genovese ’82 was promoted recently to geographic marketing director for Anheuser-Busch. He will handle all marketing activities from Maine to New York, working out of New York. Kevin Dunlap ’83 recently received the ACM SIGCOMM Test of Time Award, which recognizes papers roughly a decade old that are deemed notable and worthy of a second look. The award was for “Development of the Domain Name System,” which he co-authored with P. Mockapetris. It was published in Proceedings of ACM SIGCOMM ’88, 18(4):123-133. Patricia A. Halpin ’83 received the University of New Hampshire, Manchester, 2006 Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award. She was cited as a popular and respected teacher with both science and non-science majors. Patricia joined UNH Manchester in 1999, and has taught Anatomy and Physiology, Diversity of Life, Diseases of the 21st Century, Biotechnology and Society, and Biology. She also currently is the resource faculty in science at Granite State College. Patricia lives in Sunapee, N.H.

Frank H. Cross Jr. ’84 was promoted to captain with the U.S. Public Health Service, and became chief of the project management staff for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Division of Drug Oncology Products.

Kyle Dobbins ’84, head of the construction administration department at HSMM in Roanoke, an architectural and engineering design firm, has been promoted to senior associate.

Karen Sanderson King ’84 has moved to Jacksonville, Fla.

Lisa Doyle ’85 received the John Butler Award from Sunstar Butler, an oral hygiene product company. The award recognizes seven top North American dental hygienists each year. Lisa works for Dr. James Rutledge in Virginia Beach.

Craig Herrick ’85 was assigned, effective Aug. 1, as commanding officer, Fleet and Industrial Supply Center, San Diego.

Ebba R. Hierta ’85 recently was appointed director at the Chilmark Free Public Library. Chilmark is a small, rural town on the island of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, where Ebba lives with her husband, Chuck Hodgkinson.

Kevin Gilbert ’86 has sold his home in the Washington, D.C., area and moved back to Virginia Beach, after having been gone since graduation. “Where is all the farmland?” Kevin is working for EMC (www.emc.com) as a consultant on a two-year contract for a local telecom company.

Laurie Z. Jones ’86 recently was ranked by Barron’s, a financial newspaper, among the nation’s 100 most influential women financial advisers. A senior vice president of Wachovia Securities (she works in the firm’s Virginia Beach and Accomac offices), Laurie was ranked 97th. She was one of seven female brokers from Virginia and two from Hampton Roads who made the list.

Phillip Stancil ’86 (M.S. ’90, Ph.D. ’94) was promoted to associate professor of physics at the University of Georgia in August 2005. His research group, which includes a total of eight postdoctoral associates, graduate students and undergraduate students, performs computational studies of atomic and molecular processes for astrophysical applications. The work is funded by NASA and the National Science Foundation. Phillip lives in Suwanee, Ga., with his wife, Jianbo, a software engineer, and daughter, June, a first-grader.

Trisha P. Guarnieri ’87, associate director at Cushman & Wakefield of Florida Inc., Fort Lauderdale, has been awarded the Appraisal Institute’s MAI membership designation. It is held by appraisers who are experienced in the valuation and evaluation of commercial, industrial, residential and other types of properties, and who advise clients on real estate investments. Lt. Tom Ianucci ’88, Chaplain Corps, U.S. Navy, was reassigned in June from duty aboard the USS Wasp in Norfolk to Catholic chaplain at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. Tom entered the Chaplain Corps in 2003, initially serving with the 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines, in Okinawa, Japan. Previously, he was a priest and pastor in churches of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond following his ordination in 1994.

David Carver ’90 writes that, after 13 years as a juvenile probation officer, including his last year leading the Gang Response and Intervention Team, he has accepted a position as division manager for Sports and Youth Programs with the Loudoun County (Va.) Mike ’93 and Donna Pearson Lee ’91 recently moved into a home on Lake Hartwell in Lavonia, Ga., with their sons TJ, 7, and Matthew, 6. Mike is the director of information technology for Carry-On Trailer Co., the largest trailer manufacturer in the country. Donna still plans nationwide military reunions and conventions from a home office. She’s employed by Armed Forces Reunions Inc. (headquartered in Norfolk) as director of event planning.

Theresa LaGamma Lesiak ’93 and her husband, Robert, were married in October 2004. They announce the birth of their first child, Brady Robert, on Feb. 28, 2006. Theresa has been a probation officer for the state of New Jersey for almost nine years. The family lives in Manahawkin, N.J., with Bristow, their chocolate Lab.

Erica Redcross Valeriano ’93 has changed her career from engineering. She graduated in January from Connecticut Culinary Institute and now owns her own business, The Roaming Chef Personal Chef Service, working as a personal chef.

Laura Chittenden ’94 received her M.B.A. in April from the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. In July, she joined the consulting firm Pittiglio, Rabin, Todd and McGrath “in their government arm, in the biodefense and public health sector.” Her office will be in Washington, D.C., but for the first year she will be doing a weekly commute from Ithaca, N.Y.

Lori Ann D. Encke (M.S.Ed. ’94) was named Outstanding Teacher of Students with Disabilities by the Pilot Club for the city of Suffolk.

Mary L. Harbert ’94 and Ross J. Bell were married Sept. 2, 2005. Mary is an attorney with ARACOR in Philadelphia and Ross is a business specialist with PSEG Power in Salem, N.J. They live in Upper Deerfield Township, N.J. Ross and Mary announce the birth of their first child, Amelia Mae Harbert Bell, on July 14, 2006.

Erin Kennealy ’94 wrote in July that she and Lori Donato ’92 would be sailing on the Mediterranean Sea in September for seven days, visiting ports in France and Italy. They also planned to spend time in Barcelona, Spain. Erin, who lives in Richmond, and Lori, a resident of Sterling, are Chi Omega sorority sisters.

Patrick Lahiff ’95 expects to be in Baghdad, Iraq, through mid-December, where he is on Gen. George W. Casey’s staff in the Multi-National Force - Iraq Staff Judge Advocate’s Office. He arrived in May. “The work is interesting and every so often I get to do some really neat things like flying around in a Black Hawk helicopter to visit the Inter-national Zone or any one of the various prisons around Iraq. Frank Roberts (M.S.Ed. ’95) has left the Research Foundation after three years there providing support to U.S. Joint Forces Command as the lead for unmanned aircraft systems and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance experimentation to take a position as the first executive director of the newly created Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance. The HRMFFA is an initiative of the mayors of the 13 localities that comprise Hampton Roads to implement a regional approach to preserving and growing federal capabilities within the region.

Mark Rankin ’96 has joined the law firm of Carlton Fields in Tampa, Fla., as an associate attorney. He is in the firm’s White Collar Crime and Government Investigations Practice Group. Mark also teaches trial advocacy as an adjunct professor of law at the Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Mervyn Wighting (M.S.Ed. ’96, Ph.D. ’02) has been promoted to the rank of associate professor in the School of Education at Regent University in Virginia Beach. He teaches research design and directs the Career Switcher program. The current focus of his research is to investigate different aspects of classroom community in order to help teachers develop their instruction in ways that will connect with a diversity of learners.

Paul Brunson ’97 is the president of uKnow, a private, minority-owned education company based in Washington, D.C. Founded in 2004, uKnow focuses on the underserved education community in metropolitan areas, and has guided thousands of students and educators to reach their academic goals. The company recently secured $1 million in scholarship funds for low-income students. Paul McCann (M.S. ’97), in 2004, developed a “super-premium” brand vodka and formed The Parched Group LLC, owners of Cirrus brand vodka. In August that year, the vodka became available in the downtown Richmond commercial district. Fourteen months later Cirrus had been awarded two silver medals in international competition for the vodka spirit and a bronze for packaging. In March, Cirrus Vodka won the gold medal at the international San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and in June it became available in selected Virginia ABC stores. Paul credits the design of a triple distillation process for the vodka’s success.

Joe Fedeler (M.E.M. ’99) is the quality assurance manager at NovaTech in Lynchburg. In addition to QA management, he helps develop new business for this small firm, which is engaged in engineering design, analysis, prototyping and testing for industrial and commercial customers across the country. Cattina Holt ’02 was selected from among many local artists to paint some of the dolphin statues in Virginia Beach. Her first dolphin was one of six that were unveiled during a ceremony with Mayor Meyera Oberndorf in September 2005. It is now in front of Rudee’s Restaurant on Mediterranean Avenue. Her second dolphin is behind Marjac Suites on the boardwalk. The 7 1/2-foot-long dolphins are donated by residents and businesses, and proceeds support cancer research. Calonge, the special assistant, Office of the Undersecretary for Special Concerns and the vice chair, Overseas Absentee Voting Secretariat and Consul General, Domingo Nolasco. Calonge requested the meeting in response to the Philippines’ recent passage of a law (Overseas Voting Act of 2003) that provides its overseas citizens with an absentee voting system. Vickie has been interviewed by Overseas Vote Foundation and Soundings in recognition of being the first in the U.S. to hold the position of Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act coordinator and for her expertise in the voting process.
