Sarah M. Bishop ’75, a member of the ODU Alumni
Association board of directors, shares a laugh with actor and Verizon spokesman James Earl Jones, who visited her Norfolk office this past summer to read to some of the children in her Raising a Reader program. The early literacy program is offered under the auspices of United Way of Hampton Roads’ Success By 6, which Bishop directs. Success By 6 is a national community-based movement of public and private partnerships that work together to deliver proven solutions in early childhood development that ensure all children up to age 6 are healthy, nurtured and ready to succeed. The Verizon Foundation, which helps fund Raising a Reader, arranged for Jones’ visit.
