Alumni Pilots Land On Mall
It was, to say the least, an unusual mode of transportation that two ODU alumni took recently when paying a visit to their alma mater. Chief Warrant Officers Ronald “R.J.” Smith ’89 and Norman McIntosh ’74, both pilots with the Virginia Army National Guard in Richmond, landed their U.S. Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter on Kaufman Mall the morning of Aug. 27, adding to Old Dominion’s Debut festivities. The university’s Army ROTC unit arranged for the visit, which attracted the attention of freshmen, parents and nearby residents. Smith, a former Henrico County police officer who has been with the National Guard full time since 2001, was scheduled to leave with his unit’s aviation battalion in mid-October for a one-year deployment to Iraq. McIntosh, of Suffolk, a veteran of the Vietnam War and Desert Storm, is an accounting officer for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth.
