Gene W. Hirschfeld
Dr. Gene W. Hirschfeld, 84, an oral surgeon who founded the School of Dental Hygiene, died March 26, 2002, at his home in Virginia Beach.

The family has asked that memorial donations be made to the Gene W. Hirschfeld School of Dental Hygiene Fund at Old Dominion, in care of the Office of Development, 129 Koch Hall, Norfolk, Va. 23529.

Hirschfeld joined the faculty in 1966, having served in private practice and for the Army as an oral surgeon and director of a hospital ship training school.

He became the first director of the dental hygiene department and served in that capacity
14 years. Following his last year as chair (1979-80), he accepted the title of eminent professor and returned to full-time teaching. He retired in July 1982, at which time the department was named in his honor.

Hirschfeld helped lead a campaign for a program for dental auxiliaries, which was implemented in 1967. As well as planning and implementing dental hygiene and dental assisting curricula, he designed the facilities and personally directed the construction of the Dental Hygiene Clinic, which was completed in 1968. He also earned his master’s from Old Dominion that year.

A native of New York, Hirschfeld was a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II and practiced dentistry in Norfolk for 27 years before joining the Old Dominion faculty. He twice was voted an Outstanding Educator in America.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; two daughters, Esther Leigh Cohen and JoAnn Cardon-Glass; and a son, Richard.
