The book follows the exploits of Samuel Benjamin, a 19th-century U.S. deputy marshal who finds himself in 21st-century Oklahoma City after going through an inexplicable natural phenomenon while chasing an outlaw. When authorities find him, he is believed to have been riding a horse on I-40. Apparently, the horse was spooked, causing him to be thrown and become unconscious. Why was he riding a horse on the highway, dressed in 19th-century clothing, armed, and most importantly, with a gunshot wound to his leg?
